DTE Energy and the Downtown Detroit Partnership will host the Thursday, July 20, Grand Opening of the newest Downtown outdoor park space, the 1.5-acre Beacon Park, located at the corner of Cass and Grand River Avenues. The revitalized park space will have a restaurant, a large center green space lawn, walking paths, multi-use area for performance staging and outdoor activities, and space set aside for food trucks and bicycles.The Downtown Detroit Partnership, already a force for Downtown park events

with Quicken Loans, has set a schedule of more than 600 events this year based upon a grant from the DTE Energy Foundation. The Partnership is anticipating an instant success with the new Beacon Park expected to draw upwards of a million visitors per year. “Safe and vibrant gathering places are the social and economic heartbeat of

a thriving core, and Beacon Park expands the energy of renewal permeating downtown,” says Eric Larson, CEO of the Downtown Detroit Partnership. The Beacon Park Grand Opening will feature live entertainment from Robert

Randolph & the Family Band, with Thornetta Davis as the opening act; Lord Huron, the indie Michigan natives performing their award-winning music; a Salsa, Tacos, and Tequila Party with 4-time Grammy Award nominees Plena Libre mixing Puerto Rican and modern Afro-Caribbean rhythms; and a public art installation by the art group IMPULSE from Quartier Des Spectacles featuring gigantic interactive and illuminated see-saws activated by energy and sound. Many other family entertainment events are scheduled over the weekend, including a Gospel Brunch with Marvin Sapp, classical music concerts featuring Sphinx Detroit, and a special screening of the iconic saga of the time-traveling DeLorean, Back to the Future, with pre-show movie music from the Michigan Philharmonic Orchestra.Later this fall, a restaurant operated by well-known Birmingham restaurateurs

As part of a city-wide commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Detroit riots, the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) presents Art of Re-

bellion: Black Art of the Civil Rights Movement, July 23 - Oct. 22. The ex-hibition is free with mu-seum admission, which is free for residents of

Wayne, Oakland and Ma-comb counties. The exhibition is orga-

nized by the DIA and is in collaboration with the Charles H. Wright Muse-um of African American History, which organized the complementary ex-hibition, Say It Loud: Art, History, Rebellion. Both are part of a commu-nity-wide reflection on the Detroit riots of 1967 that involves about 100 local institutions led by the Detroit Historical Museum. Art of Rebel-lion has been generously supported by the Com-munity Foundation for Southeast Michigan and the Whitney Fund. Art of Rebellion features

34 paintings, sculptures and photographs mostly by African American art-ists working both collec-tively and independently in the 1960's and 70's. Artists in the collectives created art for African American audiences that asserted black identity and racial justice and, situated within the story of these collectives, is the Detroit riots of 1967. The exhibition also in-

cludes works by artists who were not part of a collective and artists working in later decades who were inspired by art from the Civil Rights Movement. A scholarly catalog accompanies the exhibition.The DIA's collaboration

with the Wright Museum lays a foundation from which we are building a strategic and lasting working relationship that will help bring our community closer to-gether.

Most of the exhibition focuses on the art of five artist collectives:Spiral, active 1963-65 in

New York. Kamoinge Workshop,

founded in 1963 in Har-lem. Weusi, based in Harlem,

founded in 1965. Black Arts Movement

(BAM), active in New York 1965-76.AfriCOBRA (African

Commune of Bad Rele-vant Artists), established in Chicago in 1968. Art of Rebellion also in-

cludes work by artists who did not belong to a collective but who were also reacting to civil rights and social justice issues. Some examples are Black Attack by Allie McGhee (1967), which is about Detroit's 1967

riots and Selma to Mont-gomery, Alabama March, Cover of May, 1965 Is-sue of Ebony Magazine by photographer Moneta Sleet Jr., which shows Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. leading protesters on the famous march in the title of the work.Many African American

artists working in the 1980's to the present were inspired by artists in the collectives. Among them are Rita Dickerson, whose 2017 painting 1967: Death in the Algiers Motel and Beyond (pic-tured) is about the 1967 Detroit riots. For information, call

Just about anybody in our area who has an interest in classical or jazz music listens to WRCJ, our lo-cal radio station. One can hear classical music from 6 a.m. through 7 p.m. and jazz music follows at night. The richness and potential of the music that is heard continues to influence us all and makes me, for one, grateful. Those who re-member our former classi-cal station WQRS remem-ber how much we missed it when it was discontinued. Today’s WRCJ is managed

by Dave Devereaux (pic-tured), a veteran of public television. He graduated in 1973 from Michigan State University in a program of Radio and TV. At present, he states, this program would probably fall under the category of Mass Com-munications. Devereaux joined Detroit

PBS in 1975 as Head of Communications. In 2009, he became Manager of WRCJ at 90.9 FM. He en-joys this position and de-scribes it as a “great deal of fun.” This public station has more supporters from the classical elements of the city, but there is a very big jazz fan section. The station plays mostly classi-cal and jazz music, but the general interest is to em-phasize all kinds of music and to make music more accessible to all. Devereaux’s personal in-

terests in music grew from blues, guitar, rock and roll, and Beetles into the love for jazz, classical, and country music. He states that most people get involved in mu-sic because of the influence of a parent. “Take a kid to a concert” is the mantra of today. WRCJ also has a pro-gram of Instrument Petting Zoos that began through a collaboration with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orches-

tra some 7-8 years ago and is continuing now under our own efforts. McCourt Music in Berkley (Detroit Violin Company on 12 Mile Road) has been supplying instruments for this pur-pose. Since WRCJ is a pub-

lic broadcasting station, we tend to accommodate ourselves to the fundrais-ings that take place. A nice thank you gift for contribu-tors these days consists of a nine CD set titled “My first box set of classical albums”. This comes together with booklets that describe the music and its history to the listeners. Also, there are myth style stories, which are portrayed by three characters (instruments) that tend to spark conver-sations. Currently there are 90,000

tracks in the music library of WRCJ. Full symphonies are usually played in the time slot of 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. The more Avant Garde type of music is performed in the later hours of the day. The library today includes

many down-loadings from record companies. Jim Dantzer, Music Director, is partially responsible for the fact that WRCJ has been now on the best playl-ist for four years. There are 135,000 listeners accord-ing to the rating service. WRCJ has a loose partner-ship with WKAR, which allows for broadcasts in greater Michigan, Interlo-chen and Kalamazoo. The main project of WRCJ al-lows for anybody to listen and enjoy the broadcasts. Some of the fun projects in-cluded playing composers whose names begin with letters from A to Z, holding everybody’s attention to guess who will be coming next. Another effort was called Night Flight playing pieces from different parts of the world. Now that the DSO is mak-

ing a touring trip to China and Japan, there will be ev-eryday reports from one of the performers so that spe-cial happenings will come to us. We can certainly look forward to that.

SCRAP Detroit -Welding FestivalSCRAP Detroit, a free of charge

welding festival and fundraiser, focusing on scrap metal and recy-cling, will take place on Saturday, August 12, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. in the parking lot of Traffic Jam and Snug in Midtown Detroit.This year’s theme is Bikes, mean-

ing that each sculpture must fit this theme by being built with bike parts and must be kinetic and re-volving in some way. The daylong festival will showcase Greater Detroit’s metal working culture, from welding (mig and arc), to blacksmithing, live music, and demos. Following is a preliminary list of events:•12 teams of welders have been given 250 lbs. each of metal material and will also repurpose

old bikes and industrial scrap into revolving, kinetic sculptures.•Detroit Training Center will bring a big welding bus for demos and information. Welding

Artisan Center will be there building a drift bike on site. (think adult Big Wheels).•Artisanal blacksmith’s will be providing in-person demonstrations of their craft through-

out the event.•The Luddites, Zak and What Army, and Nina and the Buffalo Riders will perform.•The welded sculptures will be auctioned off in October with proceeds going to support the

new Detroit Fitness Foundation and SPARC Detroit (Society to Promote Art & Recreation in the Community).•At 8 p.m., 2 cash prizes will be given to the most creative and best lit bikes on site. The Traffic Jam and Snug Parking Lot is located at 511 W. Canfield, in Midtown Detroit.

In conjunction with the DIA exhibition, Art of Rebellion: Black Art of the Civil Rights Movement, on July 29 beginning at 1 p.m. and running into the evening, the DIA’s Detroit Film Theatre will present free of charge a marathon screen-ing of Detroit Home Movies, a year-long project to gather home movies from around 1967 that depict everyday life in Detroit's diverse communities. The home movie project is a partnership of the DIA, Detroit

Free Press, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, Wayne State University’s Walter P. Reuther Library of Labor and Urban Affairs, Detroit Historical Society and Bridge magazine.The films will run chronologically in 45-minute chapters,
