At 2:00 early one morning, he called me almost incoherent, but able to tell me he had been running a fever of 103+ for two days. I told him to get to the ER! I got up, booked a flight, and packed a bag. I arrived by noon the next day to find out he had been admitted to the hospital. I tried to talk to the nurses and his doctors but was told in NO uncertain terms that neither could speak to me because ‘my son was over the age of 18.’ They couldn’t discuss his condition with me until my son, who was unconscious, gave them permission. Even though the law says your child becomes an adult at 18, they still need you. And you, as parents, still need and want to be involved in their health and well-being. Your parental instinct to protect doesn’t magically disappear on their 18th birthday. In fact, it never disappears. Legally they might be an adult, but forever they will be your child. So…how do you prepare in the event of the unexpected in this new privacy-driven world? Your child can legally preserve your parent/child relationship by signing two legal documents prepared by an attorney, and executed by your young adult. These legal health care documents will give you, or anyone your child designates, access to their medical records, and allow communication with the doctors, nurses and medical staff. Without these documents, federal law restricts the release of medical information, no matter that it’s your child, covered by your insurance, paid for by you. Yes, life changes when your child becomes an ‘adult.’ But you can be prepared so the testimonial above doesn’t become your own. Your preparation will bring you both peace of mind.

newsBright Futures Scholarship Information Any senior who applied for the Bright Futures Scholarship between December 1, 2014, and January 31, 2015, will receive an email and/or letter of their initial award status. Another email notification will be sent in July for students still working on SAT/ACT scores, grade point average, and community service hours. Initial eligibility does not guarantee an award, students must complete their senior year and meet all requirements before the award is finalized.

Seniors It is imperative that you complete all graduation requirements if you plan to attend the graduation ceremony. Seniors must have 26 credits and meet specific course requirements in order to participate in this year’s ceremony. Any Florida Virtual School coursework, PLATO coursework, or community service for credit must be completed by May 1 in order to be entered in time for graduation. As seniors approach the end of the school year, each college-bound senior will receive a form to complete for a final transcript request. One final transcript will be sent, free of charge, to the college where the student indicates he/she will be attending. It is mandatory that seniors complete these forms so that guidance can send the final transcript soon after graduation. Without a final transcript, the college of their choice will not let them enroll for the next term.
