The range of complementary technologies available to yacht, rig and sails designers has increased significantly: within

a design team, the use of 3D design software and computational simulation methods are becoming well established

and reliable tools.

Andrea Avaldi from ABs says: ‘’While working within a large design team, as it happens now with JYD, we use three

CAD tools and two different software for structural analysis. Exchanging data files among these multiple

platforms is essential to make our work flow more efficiently. As we are not analysts but designers looking

for the optimal solution, our work-flow is actually a cyclic optimization loop. We need to evaluate alternative solutions

and then improve it.

The challenge is twofold: while evaluating a number of alternatives at the early stages before advanced calculation, it

is necessary to minimize the resources needed to handle the communication of design, and analysis information,

amongst a technical team ‘’.

The BENEFITSThe BENEFITSThe BENEFITSThe BENEFITS

SMAR Azure’s RigEdge is the unique and innovative software enabling rig and yacht designers to rapidly define the

sail-plan and rig dimensions. The robust analysis tools quickly evaluate the sail loads on the rig and calculate the rig

deformation and relative loads

Using RigEdge, designers are now able to save the rig, sail-plan in a

STEP file that can be imported in a CAD system. In the specific case

of a yacht designer using CATIA® (version 5) the mast and

chainplate positions can be exported in a STEP file which, imported

in RigEdge, enables the design of the rig and sails in the correct

position. Once the rig design is finalized, the rig-designer can

export, in a STEP file, the rig and sail-plan along with the chainplate’s

load. This can then be imported in CATIA® for a complete 3D yacht

model along with the capability to perform structural analysis. This

solution enables a flawless design process between the yacht, and

the sail and rig designers thus saving time and ensuring quality.

Andrea Avaldi from ABs continues “In our work, we usually start from

a white board, therefore having a graphical user interface that allows

our team to quickly design spars and rigs, and also evaluate sail and

chainplate loads is very helpful. We can quickly evaluate numerous

alternatives and even details, such as the position of the shrouds on

the deck. Now we have the ability to save our work in RigEdge and

evaluate the position on the hull shape in CATIA® which is very

helpful. We can practically evaluate as many rig configurations as we

want with a simple click action.”

“Considering that in our work we are constantly evaluating

alternatives and improvements, the time we are saving over a full

design loop is of great importance. During one transfer we can

save up to 30% of the overall design time, over a full

design loop we can save up to 80% of the overall time!!”

“The ability to use RigEdge and CATIA® with such a level of

integration does not only impact our design time, but also the

quality of our work. Indeed, every time we input data by hand, we

need to double check it as the probability of making error is high.

Besides that, we do not need to deal with data saved in different file

formats.”

“The final and important consideration to make is very relevant to

our work in the yachting industry. In this industry, the average

design team is formed only by a small number of people

therefore, it is extremely important that we are using user

friendly and accurate tools. These tools allow us to

manage our small teams efficiently, which in turn allows

us to run more than one project at a time, and use our

skills and resources to design structures only.

Furthermore, it is very important that we –as managers- have always

got a global view of the project as a whole.”
