In an endeavor to reinstate its vision and efforts

to boost sustainable tourism and integrate

environment management in all business

areas,

Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces presents

EARTH (Environment Awareness & Renewal at Taj Hotels),

a project which echoes the conscious effort of

one of Asia's largest and finest group of hotels

to commit to energy conservation and

environmental management.

EARTH has received SILVER certification from

PROFESSIONAL APPROACH TAKEN FOR ENERGY CONSERVATION

• Vivanta by Taj, Kovalam carried out a campaign titled “TEM”, Total Energy Management

in association with international energy and environmental specialists - UV Krishna

Mohan Rao Associates

• The TEM called for allocation of resources in terms of man power ,time ,and money and

Vivanta by Taj, Kovalam, ensured the same.

• TEM meant to look at the entire facility in totality to derive maximum benefits out of the

conservation efforts

HEAT PUMP IN PLACE OF HOT WATER BOILER

Page 11: (A Unit of Muthoot Hotels Private Limited) ENERGY ...keralaenergy.gov.in/EET/Presentations/Vivanta TAJ.pdf · • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces has an exclusive division to plan,

HEAT PUMP

• 50000 kcal/hr, diesel (HSD) fired hot water boiler was replaced with electrically

operated heat pump for domestic hot water generation

• Heat pumps provide hot water at 55~60˚C resulting in 1/3rd the cost of generation of

hot water when diesel fired boilers are used

• Heat pumps provide cooling as a free byproduct which is used for air conditioning

thereby reducing the chiller load

• Heat pumps can provide hot water throughout the year without any interruption

• The carbon footprint by virtue of heat pump is minimal and is therefore environment

friendly.

Page 12: (A Unit of Muthoot Hotels Private Limited) ENERGY ...keralaenergy.gov.in/EET/Presentations/Vivanta TAJ.pdf · • Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces has an exclusive division to plan,

• Heat pump is a reverse cycle vapor compression air-conditioner where the rejected

heat from condenser is utilized to generate hot water or hot air.

• The evaporator of the heat pump can be designed to deliver cold air or chilled water.

• Combined cooling and heating “Coefficient of Performance” (COP) of heat pump can

be 6 to 8 and only heating COP ranges from 2.5 to 4 based on evaporation and

condensation temperature

• The following schematic gives a broad depiction of the heat pump cycle:
