Page 2: A unique event focusing on copper’s re-use and recycling industry dynamics

Scrap and recycling remain very much on theradar screens of the copper industry chain. Withclose to 40% of the copper consumed each yearcoming from secondary sources, it is difficult toignore the dynamics and influence of copperscrap, all the more so at this time when theoverall market has tipped into a marginalsurplus. Copper scrap is key to industry balances,it is a vital source of raw material for fabricators, ingot makers, smelter and refiners, bringingenergy savings and resource efficiencies. Evenminers and primary metal producers are keenlyaware today of the strong interaction betweenscrap availability and metal prices, TC/RCs andblister and cathode premiums.

But the copper recycling value chain is becomingincreasingly complex and challenging. As morecompanies seek to boost their usage of scrap andsecondary feeds, there is an increasing need forunambiguous information on scrap types and flows, forimproved collection systems, processes andtechnologies, new trading partners and investmentsources. Metal Bulletin Events’ Copper RecyclingConference provides just the focused, informative forumin which to address these needs.

Moving this year to Scandinavia – a region long at theforefront of recycling as part of environmentalprotection, the Copper Recycling Conference will homein on the drivers, challenges and opportunities facing thecopper, copper alloy and electronic scrap generating, processing and consuming business.

Boliden Rönnskär has been processingrecycling materials since the 1960s, and istoday a world leader in this sector. Its coppersmelter at Rönnskär has the capacity tohandle a vast range of raw materials, including an ever-growing percentage ofrecycling materials.

Scrapped and collected electronic productshave accounted for the biggest increase inmaterial type in recent years, primarily inthe form of circuit boards from computersand mobile phones, etc. Uniquely, Bolidenhas developed the Kaldo technology –originally used in the steel industry in the1940s – to smelt electronic scrap.

The smelted scrap, known as black copper,is integrated with the smelter's main copperflow for further refining and the extractionof copper and precious metals. An E-Kaldoplant commissioned in 2012 complementsthe existing Kaldo plant, yielding acombined annual production capacity of120,000 tonnes.

Delegates will fly from Stockholm Arlandaairport on the morning of Tuesday June 17 toSkelleftea for the short drive to Rönnskär.
