Historic Welcombe House has been home to
a long and interesting line of occupants
dating back to the early 17th century. Run by
Elizabeth Mercier as a ladies’ academy until the mid 1800s,
for part of the early 18th century, it later became the
home of Henry Hodgson, Director of Midland Railway,
his family and team of housekeeping staff, from 1871.
The house passed to its new owners, the Waltons,
in 1918, a family renowned for their charitable work,
and associated with Vauxhall motors in Luton.
In 1933 the house became a convent school, run by
the Dominican Sisters, who had previously run
a school at nearby Harpenden Hall. In 1955 the
building was extended to accept the growing number
of pupils attending the school, which was reopened
as St Dominic’s Roman Catholic School in 1964.
By 1970, Welcombe House had been transformed into
a hotel, and took on a variety of names during this period,
from The Harpenden Moat House to Corus and finally,
The Harpenden House Hotel.
