Located in downtown Miami, in the center of Museum Park and surrounded by a 12 hectare greenspace, the new Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is a striking facility complete with public gardens, terraces and sculptures. Designed by architects Herzog & de Meuron, it combines concrete and glass with elegance; a unique architectural creation in which to showcase works of art as well as provide educational activities, relaxation and dining.
The museum overlooks Biscayne Bay, where frequent tropical storms and exposure to the salt/sea air can cause serious problems for buildings in the area.
Ductal®, our ultra-high performance concrete, to meet the challenge To meet the aesthetic and resilience requirements for this project, our ultra-high performance concrete, Ductal® was chosen to produce approximately 100 long-span, precast vertical mullions to blend with the structure's cast-in-place elements and support the large curtain wall glazing which surrounds the building. To minimize view obstructions, the mullions are tall (up to 4.9 m), thin and sinuous. Overall, the structure is:
• discreet; harmoniously integrated into the surrounding environment. • resilient and sustainable; the UHPC mullions provide superior resistance to hurricane force winds, impact, abrasion and
salt/sea air.
`
Conceived as a panelized system, the frame is made of two forms of Ductal. Digital modeling and CNC milling at Georgia Tech created undulating flexible molds in which the concrete was set. Triple glazing reduces acoustic transmission while providing high thermal performance, natural day lighting, and transparency. The glazing, designed as replaceable, repairable panels, is installed directly into the concrete frame. Within spandrel cassette panels, non-freezing liquids flow and capture solar energy that is transmitted for use as radiant heat, domestic hot water production, and dehumidification of ventilation systems. The heat recovery systems are optimized to function in both winter and summer. Thermal performance is considered exceptional for this unified curtain wall system due to the elimination of metal units bridging the exterior and interior.

Working in their 12,000-square-foot, pre-World War II manufacturing facility, the Concreteworks team created metal formwork for the banquette’s dark gray Ductal elements; the at 5-by-5-by-5- foot pieces are formed with a seat on either side of a parabolic backrest. The entire cast form is only one inch thick. A special form with one seat and one flat side was made for the end of the seating row, and the curling base of each banquette is also cast from a separate mold. A three-piece host stand topped with two-inch reclaimed oak mirrors the seats, which are topped with slender, curving pieces of oak for comfort. Like the restaurant’s reclaimed elements and locally fabricated materials, Ductal will help the project achieve LEED Platinum certification because it requires fewer raw materials and limits fabrication waste.
