Do you remember “ The Twelve Dancing Princesses”? Not a fairy tale that ’s ever been touched (and changed beyond recognition) by Dis-ney, it may not be as familiar to you as Cinderella or Snow White. (No offense meant to-wards Disney - I do love their movies, but you have to ad-mit that they do make some rather major changes to their story lines.) “Entwined” takes the basic story of twelve girls who mysteriously wear out their dancing slippers in a locked room EVERY NIGHT, a slew of suitors trying to solve the

puzzle, and a worthy youth with an invisibility cloak, and expands it into an intricate, beautiful tale of romance, bravery, and family loyalty. Rather than have the sisters all be the same age - l ike in the original tale - Dixon has them range in age from 16 year old Azalea to newborn Lily. And each sister has her own unique personality - from brash, prickly Bramble to sweet, retiring Clover. The central part of the original tale (the midnight dancing) is explained both magically (a secret magical realm be-low the palace!) and logically (the girls are forbidden to dance, their dearest pastime which they shared with their

Goodbye Ms. Jenny!

The Candymakers by Wendy MassThis book can be found in the Juvenile Fiction Collec-tion at J Mass

Life really is sweet at the “Life is Sweet” Candy Fac-tory as LoganSweet knows. He has spent all of his twelve years living there.Logan knows all about making candy and how the factory works. Thereis just one problem...he is hor-rible at actually making candy! He dreams of one day taking over the “Life is Sweet” Candy Factory, but to do that he has to win the Confectionary Association’s Best New Candy Contest just l ike his father and his grandfather. But will he be able to make his Bubbletas-tic Choco-Rocket and beat the other budding candy makers?

Wendy Mass does an amaz-ing job of telling each char-acter ’s story and unique point of view. All of the novice candy makers have their own little mysterious secret and Mass does a phe-nomenal job of getting the reader to sympathize with each character though they are all competing against each other. So, whose team will you be on as the fourchildren race to win the best new candy award?

Over one hundred parents, children, and staff gathered July 26th to say, “Goodbye” to children’s librarian Jen-nifer Campbell. Jennifer will be leaving North Kansas City Public Library after nearly four years of service at our library. She will be accept-ing the position of Library Media Specialist at Notre Dame de Sion High School.

We are very proud of Jenny and wish her well; however, we will miss the special joy she has brought to our li-brary’s children.

deceased mother, because of the mourning period they must observe). This book’s main theme, however, cen-ters on the girls’ relationship with their distant father and specifically the deathbed promise ‘sworn on silver ’ that Azalea made to her mother. While it ’s mostly Azalea’s sto-ry, I felt at the end that I actu-ally knew every character - a rare accomplishment for an author ’s debut novel!. By Library StafferRachel Merrill

An exciting opportunity for moms and daughters to share their love of reading with others, the library ’s Mother Daugh-ter Book Group, will be accepting signups this August. The first meeting of the year will be held in September, with four more meetings in November, January, March, and May.

Girls from 4th-6th grade and their moms meet to: Discuss the book (of course!) Share snacks - every meeting is a ‘potluck’ with the library providing one type of snack and drinks, and members bringing goodies to share. Play games and make crafts that tie in with the book.

Our first book this year will be “ The School Story” by Andrew Clements. Past books have included “Dealing with Dragons”, “ The Mother Daughter Book Club”, and “A Little Princess”. At our first meeting of the year we will vote on the books to be read the rest of the year from a list of choices.

Space is l imited, so call - (816)-221-3360 x1012; email – [email protected]; or stop by the Children’s desk; and sign up today!
