A truly immersive A truly immersive historical experience! historical experience!
This week, our Year 5 narrative saw our children take on the role of Viking settlers.
They travelled to a settlement close to Yorvik and had to prove their worth as true Vikings!
Having rich experiences, which fully immerse children in their learning, is what we strive for at Southdale and seeing their learning
brought to life this way is just fabulous! As always, our children shone during this
experience; it was lovely to hear such positive comments about their attitudes
and behaviour. Well done year 5!
Mrs K Partington
We have accomplished our first survival task!On Tuesday, our Survival Academy Instructors challenged us by giving us a geography quiz which included the countries of the UK and the difference between towns and cities. We used our knowledge from our lessons and managed to correctly answer all our questions which meant we were ready for the next part of our training.
This week, we have been looking at the mountainous regions and using atlases, topographical maps and iPads to research more about the highest peaks in each country of the UK. Following this, we have also learnt and understood what mountains are and how they are formed. We can’t wait for the next part of our training!
In other news, we have thoroughly enjoyed our PE lessons. We have been working on our athletic skills and we have improved our sprinting and javelin techniques.

Task one – Complete!
During our Religion and Worldviews lessons, we have been learning about the creation story and what is amazing about the natural world. We followed this on by learning about Adam and Eve. We all enjoyed a discussion based lesson to understand what is meant by temptation and we had some interesting viewpoints about who was to blame for sin entering the world.

Stunning Writing!
In our quest to discover more about the kitten Varjak Paw, we, as the Elite Feline Committee, have been working on documenting his last moments before entering the dangerous world outside the walls of his garden. We have edited and published these narratives, producing some stunning writing!
In Science this week, we did a carousel of activities to find out what we know about electricity. We had some good ideas about the different components of a circuit and what makes it work, as well as about the uses and dangers of electricity. We can’t wait to discover more and use our knowledge to help Varjak Paw in his next quest!

Our narrative took an unexpected twist this week and we have now taken on the role of Viking settlers.
We arrived close to Yorvik on a rainy morning and were fortunate to find a suitable settlement. In order to stay there, we had to carry out a number of tasks to prove our worth to the Lord and Lady of the settlement.
We farmed the land, collected wood, ground grain, made lamps and guarded the new village. After all that hard work, we were relieved to hear that the lord and lady of the settlement were pleased and we could stay.
The Vikings are here!
As part of our first art lesson this year, we revised and practised our sketching techniques and looked closely at the work of artist Tim Jeffs.
Many more photos will be uploaded to the Southdale Online Gallery in the near future. Access to details to follow.

Year 6
Simply Sparkling in Y6!
Our final writing outcomes have simply sparkled. We took pride in our work and published our unique diary entries, in the role of our mysterious islander.
To accompany this, in art, we started to explore the conditions that the islander is in, by sketching an abstract shape and form of the body - this will help us with our next task!
In science, we have started to demonstrate our prior knowledge of light in a science carousel.
On Thursday, 6MF cooked another batch of delicious, vegetable soup, whilst 6ZR persevered in their teams to complete a team-building challenge. What a busy week!
Supporting your child at home this week
YEAR 3 THIS WEEKReading:
Please read with your child at home and ensure that they are reading for at least 20 minutes a day. We expect children to be changing their home reading book every week.
Maths:
Please support your child by encouraging them to practise their times tables using the app TT Rock Stars. In year 3, your child needs to know their 3, 4, and eventually, their 8 times tables.
Adding and Subtracting 1, 10 and 100
This week, help your child to consolidate their learning in school of adding and subtracting 10 and 100 using their place value knowledge.
234 + 10 = 244 391 - 100 = 291 285 + 10 + 100 = 395
Narrative:
Children are continuing to advance their skills at the Survival Academy in preparation for their adventure. We have been thinking about our themes of Nature and Survival and the importance of the wonderful world we live in. We have also discussed the benefits of spending time outdoors in nature and the effects it can have on our wellbeing.

YEAR 4 THIS WEEKReading: Please read with your child at home and ensure that they are reading for 20 minutes a day. The children also love being read to at school. At the moment we are reading Varjak Paw as our narrative text. Next week, we are starting, ‘The Legend of Podkin One-Ear’.
Maths: We are working on the place value of numbers in maths. We have been comparing four digit numbers using more than, less than and equal to. We need to remember to look at and compare the number of digits to help us. We look at and compare the thousand place value, then the hundred, then the ten and finally the ones and we can then work out which number has the highest value. The video will help to see how we have been working. There are questions on the question link if you would like to practise. You can print it out if you’d like to. If you are not able to print, please let your child’s class teacher know as we can get you a copy.

Narrative: Varjak has had to make the hardest decision of his life this week to leave the poor Elder Paw behind in the garden and make his way to the Outside world. But first, he has to climb over the towering, moss cloaked garden wall. What will the outside hold and will he survive out there on his own?

YEAR 5 THIS WEEKReading: The most important thing you can do to support your child with their education is to encourage them to read for 20 minutes every day.
