To Use:One of my favorite stories to use when teaching Comparing and

Contrasting is The Three Little Pigs because you can find so many wonderful versions.

Prior to teaching this skill, I make sure that my students have a good background knowledge on Character analysis. I want to make sure that they know the difference of me asking them to compare a character to actually

comparing the story. When teaching, I always start out with The 3 Little Pigs version by James Marshall. On this first day, we read the story and create a story map, paying close attention to the events of the story and not so much the characters and setting. On the second day, I introduce another version of

the book (Usually The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig by Eugene Trivizas.) We then go through an oral story mapping of the characters, setting, and events. This is when I pull the sheet out and we work together to compare

those two stories. I continue reading, discussing, and comparing as many different versions of this story each day until the students have a good grasp on the concept. Each time we read a new version, I back off on my modeling and allow them to guide the conversation more. Then when I think they are

ready I will read one final version and give them the sentence frame to finish inside their reading journals. There are 3 different styles of comparison charts

to choose from. Enjoy!

Texts To Use:Here are a few of the different versions that I love to use.
