b) Register with Private Health Insurance As you are on a provisional visa you will not be entitled for any Government Benefits so it is a good to register with Private Health Insurance. Private health insurance funds may cover costs for your treatment as a private patient in private or public hospitals and can include some services such as dental care, most optical care and ambulance transport. If you wish to purchase private health insurance, it is important to compare different funds. The cost and type of cover can vary widely.
c) Open a Bank Account
In Australia, most income including salary or wages and government benefits are paid directly into a bank account.
You should open a bank account within six weeks of your arrival, as you usually need only your passport as identification. After six weeks you will need extra identification to open an account.
d) Enrol Your Children in School
Under Australian law, children must attend school until they are 15 years old. You should enrol your children in a school as soon as possible.
The education system in Australia is open to all people. It offers an opportunity for all age groups and levels of ability. You can get into any level of education if you have the entry requirements. If at first you do not reach the entry standard, then you can do other study to get to the standard. Help is available for all people who suffer disadvantage.
School is compulsory for all children aged between five and fifteen years. These ages may vary slightly in some states. The government provides public schools. Churches and other groups provide private schooling. Public schooling is free and users pay fees for

private schooling. Note: Students holding temporary visas may be required to pay full school fees. Check with individual schools for details.
The positions in higher education have entry levels that students must achieve to get them. The people most likely to succeed get the positions first. Some students start when they finish school. Other students start study later as an adult.
Many employers provide training that helps their employees to do their job. You may do a study course for interest only. People living in Australia are encouraged to join in and gain more education throughout their life.

6. DVD helps migrants understand tax
Many taxpayers come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. For these Australians, understanding tax obligations can be a particular challenge.
The Australian Taxation Office has developed a new audio‐visual product that will help.

Tax in Australia: What you need to know is available as a DVD and also on www.ato.gov.au (via "other languages") as an audio‐visual program.
Director of the ATO's Access and Diversity Unit Loc Trinh said the DVD communicated the benefits and responsibilities associated with the tax and superannuation systems in Australia.
"Such a resource is important to help migrants settle into their new home," Mr Trinh said.
Tax Commissioner Michael D'Ascenzo joined Assistant Treasurer Senator Nick Sherry to launch the DVD at the SBS headquarters in Artarmon, Sydney, on 5 August. The broadcaster's multicultural production division, SBS In Language, worked with the ATO to produce the DVD.
Mr D'Ascenzo acknowledged that people from diverse backgrounds could face particular challenges.
"This product will assist new migrants understand the tax and super systems — and how as valued members of the community they can share in the benefits they provide," he said.
The online audio visual file and DVD provides practical support and guidance to the community about their rights and obligations.
The DVD — the ATO's first audio‐visual communications product aimed at diverse audiences — introduces Australia's tax and superannuation systems, and gives basic information about the need and use of Tax File Numbers (TFN) as well as what people need to know when they start employment.
Taxpayers can order the DVD through www.ato.gov.au, by telephoning 1300 720 092 or by emailing [email protected] There is no charge for the DVD, which is available in 10 languages (all subtitled in English): English, Burmese (Karen), Mandarin, Korean, Dari, Dinka, Vietnamese, Arabic, Thai and Farsi.

How to make appointments with doctors and dentists

There is a shortage of doctors in rural NSW and Victoria. You may have to contact a number of medical clinics before finding a general practitioner that is taking new patients.
Medical appointments are generally for 5‐10 minutes. If you think that your appointment will take longer than that time, please advise the receptionist so that a longer appointment can be made for you. A longer appointment will cost more money.
Appointments for a general practitioner usually cost around $50‐55 per appointment, longer appointments are more expensive. These fees are generally due up front, so you should not make the appointment unless you have the funds to pay for the appointment.
Appointments at medical clinics are usually between 9.00am and 5.00pm. Some clinics have emergency appointments available on Saturday mornings.
You should ensure that you are at least five minutes early for your first appointment, to complete the necessary information that the clinic requires to ascertain your medical history. You should also ascertain from the receptionist if the doctor is running on time, as there may be a delay in the doctor seeing you if medical appointments before you have run over time.
In most country medical practices, there are more than one general practitioner at each clinic. Sometimes doctors may call patients in for their appointment who arrived at the clinic after you ‐ that may be because your doctor is running behind time, and not a reflection on you.
If your matter is urgent and you cannot afford to go to the doctors or if it is after hours, you should contact the emergency department of your local hospital.
Your other option is to call Nurse On Call, a Victorian government health initiative which puts you directly in touch with a registered nurse for caring, professional health advice around the clock. You may need nurse on call when:
• you or someone you're caring for is feeling unwell • you are not sure if you should seek medical help • you're away from home or situated a long way from medical help • you simply want advice or information about health services in your area.

The Emergency Number in Australia is 000 for all emergencies including fire, police or serious accidents, injuries and severe illness or threat to life.
Only ring 000 for emergency, fire, police or ambulance. Calling 000 for non‐emergencies is illegal, dangerous and wastes community resources. Illegal or improper use of emergency phone numbers may result in fines or jail.
Medical specialists
If you require an appointment with a medical specialist, you will need to obtain a referral from a general practitioner first, which involves making an appointment with your general practitioner. If you are unsure if you need a referral, you should contact the medical specialist and ask if a referral is required. A referral is generally in the form of a letter that the general practitioner sends to the medical specialist on your behalf detailing relevant aspects of your medical history.
If you have a complaint or concern about the conduct or advice from a medical practitioner, you should contact the regulatory body. The regulating body for all doctors is the Australian Medical Association, and the contact details are:

Dentists
There is a shortage of dentists in rural NSW and Victoria. You may have to ring a number of dentists before you find a clinic that is accepting new patients.
You will need to pay for the dentists account up front. A gene ral check up costs around $60.00 depending on each clinic. If you are unsure of the amount, you should ask the receptionist before making the appointment.

You should arrive at your first appointment at least five minutes early so that you can fill in a form to provide the dentist with your dental history, contact details and so on.
You may be referred to a specialist, called an orthodontist.

10. Education
As a major regional centre supporting a population base of more than 100,000 people, Albury‐Wodonga has developed an impressive education sector to rival the capital cities.
Within Albury‐Wodonga you will find a variety of public and private schools each committed to providing first class education to the region's students. The choice begins with 32 kindergartens, 16 public and eight private primary schools plus seven public and five private secondary colleges including one with boarding facilities.
The district's schools all feature large areas of play which include sporting fields, tennis, netball and basketball courts plus grassed playing areas and attractive courtyards. Along with this, encouraging and caring environments help to foster qualities and co‐operation, mutual respect and high self‐esteem.
Tertiary institutions include two universities and two TAFE campuses as well as a Continuing Education Centre, one of the largest independent adult education providers.
