RESPONSIBILITY
"Doing what's right and being accountable when no one's watching."
Ÿ The Principle of Responsibility is one of the most powerful, life enhancing, life changing Principles we have at our disposal.
Ÿ Meaning by the Collins Dictionary, responsibility means to accept someone or something that has happed and agree that I caused is at part of a duty in a job or position.
Ÿ Responsibility means being accountable, trustworthy and dependable, in the role one plays and hats one wears.
Ÿ Responsibility begins with the willingness TO ACCEPT BEING THE CAUSE OF MATTER IN ONE'S LIFE. Actually, it is the context from which one chooses to live life that produces results.
Ÿ Being 'Response-able' is not a burden, fault, praise, blame, credit, shame or guilt. With Responsibility, there is no evaluation of good or bad, right or wrong. There is simply accountability for outcome.
Ÿ No one can make me responsible, nor can anybody impose Responsibility on me. It is the POWER, I give myself, an empowering stance that leaves me with a say in matters of my PROFESSIONAL & PERSONAL life with no blame on others.
Ÿ Every right implies a Responsibility, every opportunity implies an obligation, and every possession implies a duty.
Ÿ In the final analysis, the great need in the world isn't for more genius, or even for more skills. It's more people willing to accept Responsibility for their actions.
FIVE PROFESSIONAL RULES FOR THE WORK PLACE
Whether we like it or not, we spend a large part of our day at our workplace. How we behave and conduct ourselves in the work place speaks alot about the kind of person we are. Here are some simple workplace etiquette that every working professional would want to follow.
1. Be on Time Every day : Make it a point to reach your workplace on time everyday, irrespective of when others come.
2. Dress appropriately : While getting dressed for work, look at yourself in the mirror and ask youself if you can go to a party after work in these clothes. If your answer is NO, then you are dressed appropriately for work. Always remember to abide by the professional workplace "dress code/uniform."
3. Stay away from Gossip : Most of us believe that it is okay to gossip about each and every colleague in the office. However, remember that there is no place for gossip mongers in a professional work environment. Even if you are in the habit, refrain from gossiping.
4. Respect one another : Learn to respect your seniors, subordinates and peers. Your good behaviour can take you a long way. Do not get upset with idle gossip.
5. Don't disturb others : You must have team spirit if you want to be successful in your work. Avoid speaking loudly, speaking out of turn or talking too much. If you want to be heard, you must let others speak as well.
Conduct yourself appropriately at your workplace and win appreciation from colleagues and seniors.
OUR WORKPLACE
As you enter your place of work please choose to
make today a great day. Your colleagues, customers, team
members and you yourself will be thankful. Find ways to
play. We can be serious about our work without being
serious about ourselves. Stay focused in order to be present
when your customers and team members most need you.
And should you feel your energy lapsing, try this surefire
remedy : Find someone who needs a helping hand, a word
of support, or a good ear-and make their day.
Do we Respond or React ?
We react negatively when we communicate when angry, upset, frustrated, disappointed
99% of life situations will have flavours of these because of the negativities of others
We could still choose to respond positively and keep the Power with us
Reaction versus Emotional Stability
"Ladies and gentlemen! Step right up and direct your attention to the high flying acrobats in the big top!"
No circus is complete without the daring young men and women of the flying trapeze. People are
fascinated, not because it is difficult to hang onto the bar, but because of that one second when the performer lets
go of the old bar and reaches for the new one. In that instant the acrobat's whole being is focused.
His thoughts are focused on the bar-not about what he was doing yesterday, or
what he plans to do tomorrow.
His eyes are focused on the bar-not looking down, or backwards or up.
His entire body is in motion toward the bar-knowing he cannot turn around and go back,
he cannot steady himself on solid ground.
He is committed to seize it when the timing is right and move forward.
Prograss in life comes when an opportunity - a choice, a possibility to change - swings into view. To grasp the new
bar we must let go of the old, swinging from one trapeze to another. Sometimes we are simply hanging on for dear
life, not going anywhere, and trying not to fall.
At other times we are moving forward, then backwards ; stuck in the swing of a cycle, matter that in all our
previous leaps across the void of the unknown, we have always made it. Each time we are afraid we will miss, that
we will fall and crash against the harsh realities of life. We have no guarantee, no net, no insurance policy, but we
do it anyway because we have decided that to keep hanging onto that old var is no longer on the list of alternatives.
And so for an eternity that can last a microsecond or a thousand lifetimes, we soar across a gap of uncertainty
reaching for an opportunity.
This gap is called a transition and it is in these gaps that life is experienced in its fullest. Transitions in our lives are
incredibly rich places. They should be honored, even treasured. Even with all the struggles, fears, and feelings of
being out-of-control that accompany transitions, they are still the moments when we feel most alive and
experience the greatest growth.
Its time to let go of that which holds you back,to trade your security for opportunity,
to begin the transition to progress in your life.
When you do so, you'll discover that high flyers are not found only in the circus.
By Nancy MacKay, Ph.D
Adapted from the book : The Talent Advantage by Dr. Alan Weiss and Dr. nancy MacKay, published by Wiley.
Engaged employees have the highest productivity because they show up mentally and physically every day with a high degree of motivation to deliver extraordinary results.
The following six strategies will keep you engaged at work.
1. Build friendships with people at work.
Ÿ On a scale of 1 (low)-10 (high), how satisfied are you with the friendships you have at work?
Ÿ Love and connection is the most important emotional need that people have to stay motivated.
Ÿ We spend roughly 50% more time with our customers, coworkers, and bosses than we do with our friends, significant others, children and other relatives combined.
Ÿ Gallup research shows that without a best friend at work, the chances of being engaged in your job are 1 in 12.
Ÿ Gallup research shows that employees who have a close friendship with their boss are more than 2.5 times as likely to be satisfied with their job.
Action Item : If you want to be more engaged at work, develop at least three strong friendships at the office, maybe even one with your boss.
2. Develop a learning and growth plan on a quarterly basis.
Ÿ On a scale of 1 (low) - 10 (high), how satisfied are you with the opportunity you have to learn and grow in your current role ?
Ÿ Learning and growth is a life-long emotional need that people have to stay motivated.
Ÿ You currently have skills, behaviours and experience that enable you to deliver results.
Action Item : Identify learning and growth objectives and develop a 90-day action plan to improve your skills, behaviours and experience in required areas to help you achieve your full potential.
3. Contribute to the success of the people around you.
Ÿ On a scale of 1 (low)- 10 (high), how satisfied are you with the contribution you make to the success of both internal and external people?
Ÿ Contribution is a life-long emotional need that people have to stay motivated.
Ÿ Action Item : Identify three activities that you do that contribute to the success of others. Develop a plan to spend more time doing these activities and/or add new activities within the scope of your role.
Ÿ On a scale of 1 (low)- 10 (high), how significant and important is the work that you do ?
Ÿ Significance is a life-long emotional need that people have to stay motivated.
Ÿ When you do activities that you love to do, you feel a sense of purpose and significance.
Action Item : Identify what you do that makes you feel significant and important. Develop a plan
The Talent Advantage :Six Strategies to Keep You Engaged at Work
to spend more time doing these activities and/or add new activities within the scope of your role.
5. Embrace variety and challange.
Ÿ On a scale of 1 (low) - 10 (high), how satisfied are you with the amount of variety and challenge in your current role ?
Ÿ Variety and challenge is a life-long emotional need that people have to stay motivated.
Ÿ Boredom sets in if you don't have enough variety and challenge in your role.
Action Item : Identify what you do that makes you feel a sense of variety and challenge. Develop a plan to spend more time doing these activities and/or add new activities within the scope of your role.
6. Create certainty to achieve career success.
Ÿ On a scale of 1 (low) - 10 (high), how satisfied are you with the amount of certainty and control you have related to your career success ?
Ÿ Certainty is a life-long emotional need that people have to stay motivated.
Ÿ Fear and pessimism set in if you don't have enough certainty related to your career success.
Action Item : Define what career success looks like to you. Reach out to your boss (and other coaches and mentors) to help you create more certainty related to your career success.
FISH! is a way of life. It is a set of simple interconnected principles that everyone can tailor to their own life and work. No one else can live these principles for you. When you choose to make these principles a part of your life, no matter what is going on around you or where you are in your life's journey, you will notice a positive difference in your relationships and within yourself.
FISH! Is old wisdom for each new day. It reminds us of what we often forget when we're busy, stressed-out and self-absorbed. In people who are living FISH! is not a replacement for strategy, tactics, experience, continuing education or good old-fashioned elbow grease. It's not a guarantee against the cycles, Layoffs & other realities of a quickly shifting global economy. It's not a magic pill. It does not happen overnight.
FISH! does not ask you to follow specific steps in a certain order. Every organization/institution, every person, is different. Each finds different ways to bring FISH! into their lives.
FISH! is an INVITATION to join a new Vision. Unfortunately many Leaders assume programmes must be implemented to "Change" People and then grow impatient as the Programming does not work, in invitation the environment is transformed together from conflict & pressure to support & opportunity.
FISH! can get started & last only by talking about it. Organisations are driven by Conversations. Some are helpful, others are negative & draining According to Management guru Tom Peters, how we speak about our work influences how we work. The Language of FISH! (PLAY, MAKE THEIR DAY, BE THERE & CHOOSE YOUR ATTITUDE) helps us to get to what matters. It creates an opening for honest conversations that help people bring more of what they are thinking, and who they are, to work.
