A tale of two doctors By: Kelsey McNeil
Day 1:Discovering the Crime Scene
At approximately 2:37 p.m. outside theThompson MedicalCenter Dr. EdwardRicardo was found dead. A strand of hair was found at the
scene.
Day 2: DNA Testing
While the detective search for the killer the forensic scientists are hard at work in the lab.
The strand of the hair was tested the next day to determine whom the DNA belonged to.
Using restriction enzymes the hair is cut up
Day 2: DNA Testing cont. After using the
restriction enzymes to cut up the DNA it is then cloned by using the cDNA process. In this process the DNA found on the scene is taken, denatured, and then mRNA comes to bind to the DNA, but through reverse transcriptase the mRNA is turned into cDNA (complementary DNA)
The cDNA is then used to make copies of the DNA, which are then stored in case something happens to the original DNA.
Day 3: Still DNA Testing
Then it goes through DNA sequencing so the bases of the DNA can be determined in order.
When the DNA has been sequenced all of the nucleotide bases in the DNA are uncovered in order so we have a complete set of the suspects DNA.
Day 4: Suspects questioned There are several suspects in
custody Suspects include:
- Mrs. Ricardo- Dr. Jean Poole- Mr. Wilson (the gardener)
Each suspect has been questioned and has given a DNA sample
Day 5: The killer is revealed
The check swabs taken of each suspect have been processed and have undergone PCR (polymerase chain reaction).
This reaction amplified the DNA so scientist could easily read it and compare it to the DNA found on the scene of the crime.
And the results show…………………………..
Dr.Jean Poole!!!
Dr. Jean Poole confessed to killing Dr. Ricardo out of sheer jealously.
Dr. Ricardo was a new doctor on the block and was already getting more patients than Dr. Poole was.
Dr. Poole was arrested for Class 1 premediated murder, and was sentenced to 23-life in prison.
