Heidelberg Catechism
#123 Q. What is the second petition?
A. Thy kingdom come. That is: so rule us by Thy Word and Spirit that we may
submit ourselves more and more to Thee;
preserve and increase Thy Church;
destroy the works of the devil, every power that exalts itself against Thee, and all wicked counsels conceived against Thy holy Word,
until the perfection of Thy kingdom arrive wherein Thou shalt be all in all.

Q. 102. What do we pray for in the second petition?A. In the second petition, which is, Thy kingdom come, we pray that Satan’s kingdom may be destroyed;
and that the kingdom of grace may be advanced, ourselves and others brought into it, and kept in it;
and that the kingdom of glory may be hastened.

Q. 191. What do we pray for in the second petition?A. In the second petition, (which is, Thy kingdom come), acknowledging ourselves and all mankind to be by nature under the
dominion of sin and Satan, we pray, that the kingdom of sin and Satan may be destroyed,
the gospel propagated throughout the world, the Jews called, the fullness of the Gentiles brought in; the church furnished with all gospel-officers and ordinances, purged from corruption, countenanced and maintained by the civil magistrate: that the ordinances of Christ may be purely dispensed, and made effectual to the converting of those that are yet in their sins, and the confirming, comforting, and building up of those that are already converted: that Christ would rule in our hearts here,
and hasten the time of his second coming, and our reigning with him forever: and that he would be pleased so to exercise the kingdom of his power in all the world, as may best conduce to these ends.

The Kingdom of God is not of this world …
vs. Roman Catholicism – equates the Kingdom of God with the visible church.
vs. the Social Gospel – “peace on earth, good will to men” (Lk. 2:14,
KJV) Fatherhood of God, brotherhood of men Kingdom of Man rather than of God
vs. Theonomy – Israel as model rather than type

… yet, the Kingdom of God is over this world.
God executeth his decrees in the works of creation and providence (WSC #8). And to its conclusion.
God exercises his rule from the throne of heaven through the faith/obedience of his people.

The will of God as King …
is to manifest his glory through the gospel of redemption.
is to place Christ on the throne (Mt. 28:18).
is to have all mankind honor Christ as King (Phil. 2:10-11).

“Thy Kingdom come …”Psalm 110
1 The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand,until I make your enemies your footstool.”
2 The LORD sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies!3 Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours.4 The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind,“You are a priest forever
after the order of Melchizedek.”

“Thy Kingdom come …”Psalm 110
5 The Lord is at your right hand; he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.6 He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses;he will shatter chiefs over the wide earth.7 He will drink from the brook by the way; therefore he will lift up his head.

“Thy Kingdom come …”Jesus’ own words:
“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left.” (Mt. 25:31-33, ESV)

“Thy Kingdom come …”
means to see Christ take the throne. means to behold Christ judge his enemies.
means to receive from Christ the inheritance of the kingdom as his sons.
So when does all this actually take place?
