The Director of the Roskamp Institute, Dr. Michael Mullan stated that the institute has now been testing the experimental drug, Nilvadipine which may be found appropriate to treat the early outbreak of the Alzheimer disease. Nilvadipine is called as an anti –hypertensive and has had a safe and good profile in relieving hypertension in both Japan and Europe. This can used for treating Alzheimer because one of the risk factors of the disease. Two new types of medications for Alzheimer which has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are cholinesterase and memantine inhibitors. Both of them work on basis of cognitive dysfunction.
What is Alzheimer’s disease?
The Alzheimer’s Disease accounts for 60 to 70 % of cases of the disease dementia. It is a kind of chronic neurodegenerative disease which starts slowly but worsens with time. Its symptoms may include short
term loss of memory, mood swing, problems with language, disorientation, behavioural issues, loss of motivation and many more. Eventually the functions of the body are lost and finally death. The major risk factors of this disease are hypertension, depression and head injuries while avoiding obesity and performing physical and mental exercises may avoid this disease from developing.
