Such traditional cooking practice is characterized by low thermal efficiency (10%) and emits toxic smoke. Women (and accompanying children) cooking with a mud stove, particularly in poorly ventilated kitchens, have increased risk of pneumonia, respiratory diseases, etc. due to household air pollution caused by biomass burning. In India alone 10 lakh premature deaths are attributed to household air pollution. Smoke from incomplete combustion of biomass during cooking also emits climate change agents like black carbon. Designed by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), an autonomous, not-for- profit research organization working globally with headquarters in New Delhi, this stainless steel stove uses traditional biomass such as fuel wood, agriculture residue and cattle dung cake as fuel. A fan at the bottom of the stove blows air into the combustion chamber in such a way that the biomass burns with an improved efficiency than normal open air cooking thereby resulting in less smoke emission. The fan is powered by a Lithium Ion battery which in turn can be charged by either solar panels (in un-electrified households) or AC power to cater to households in un-electrified areas. A mix of stainless steel grade in different thickness has been used for this stove. 304 grade of stainless steel has been chosen for inner core, where burning of bio mass takes place, for its ability to withstand higher temperature together with long life on account of its higher corrosion resistance. Outer structure, bottom & top plates, legs, all nuts & bolts are made of AISI 202 stainless steel grade. One stove consumes nearly 7 kg of stainless steel. Stainless steel offers a maintenance free service life. Preliminary figures released by theInternational Stainless Steel Forum(ISSF) show that stainless steel crudesteel production has been furthergrowing in the first half of 2013 with anincrease of 4.6% compared to the sameperiod of 2012. Total production for thefirst six months of 2013 was 18.6 millionmetric tons (mmt) – these are 0.8 mmtmore than in the same period of lastyear and it is another all-time-high.

However the analysis by regions and evenmore by individual countries show verymixed results ranging from minus 15%to plus 15%.

In Asia with China excluded, stainlesssteel production decreased by 3.7% to4.3 million tons. There was a mixedperformance of the individual Asiancountries in the period of review: WhileIndia showed increased production

volumes the stainless crude steelproduction decreased in Japan, Koreaand Taiwan, China. China increased thestainless steel production in the periodof review by 15.1% to 8.8mmt. problem. Also it is easier to clean andwash the stove with just water or simpledetergent.

ISSDA’s Annual Forward Looking Session & 24th AGM

The Indian Stainless Steel DevelopmentAssociation (ISSDA) held its AnnualForward Looking Session and 24th AnnualGeneral Meeting (AGM) on September30, 2013 at Casurina Hall, India HabitatCentre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi 110 003.

More than 50 personnel from variousindustry associations and Governmentbodies such as Indian Railways amdMinistry of Steel and representatives ofISSDA Member companies attended theAnnual Forward Looking Session. Theywere very happy with the presentationsand arrangements made. Mr SyedainAbbasi, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Steel& Chairman of JPC was the Chief Guestof this event. In his address heemphasized on the need of a sustainabledevelopment and how stainless steel asa material can help achieve that.

Mr Richard Matheseon, Nickel Institute,Mr J K Jain, CME, Rail Coach Factory,Rae Bareli, Mr N C Mathur, PresidentISSDA and Mr Rohit Kumar of ISSDAmade presentations and shared futureplans of Railways, in sector likearchitecture, building and construction(ABC) and in the field of renewable

energy in respect of the use of stainlesssteel.

Production of stainless steel coaches atnew coach factory of Indian Railways atRae Bareli has started and is expectedto reach a 1000 coach production peryear by 2015. ISSDA and its membercompanies would continue to supportand share the knowledge on stainlesssteel in grade selection, design, formingand fabrication to the fullest with theRailway board.

Participants were informed by ISSDAPresident on the plans to celebrate silverjubilee of ISSDA completing 25 years in2014. In view of this; ISSDA is planning

to host a ‘Conference cum Exhibition’ inNovember 2014 at New Delhi.

President also informed about therelease of market research report ‘Factsof Indian Stainless Steel Market’ byISSDA. ISSDA participated in the BIG 5 CONSTRUCT INDIA 2013, the International Building and Construction Show held from 2-4September, 2013 organized by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in cooperation with DMGEvents and co organized by Ministry of Urban Development, Govt. of India.

The 15th World Innovation Summit & Expo CONSTRUTECH INDIA 2013was held at Bombay Exhibition Centre, Goregaon (E), Mumbai from1-3 October 2013.

Arignar Anna Zoological Park is one ofthe modern and scientifically managedzoos of the Country. It is also the firstzoo in India, which was started duringthe year 1855.

Recently zoo authorities have taken theinitiative to replace the existing steelenclosures with stainless steel for itscarnivorous animals like Tiger, Leopard,Lions, Jackals etc.

Animals urinate and does it often toadvertise its territory. A carnivore’s urineis acidic in nature and can speed upthe corrosion process of material proneto form rust. The living enclosure of

such animals made of steel has shownheavy rusting in past. Zoo authoritiesinformed that replacing an enclosure andfitting new one is very stressfull not onlyto them but to the animals too. Animals has a tendency to rubtheir body against the enclosures whichcan result into injury and if it is from arusted steel then it can cause seriousseptic.

Were happy to select stainless steelwhich fulfilled their criteria of a materialhaving high strength, good corrosion

Adhesive Bonding of StainlessSteel

Adhesive Bonding is the process ofjoining materials with the aid of anadhesive – a substance capable ofholding materials together by surfaceattachments. Although adhesives arecapable of producing structures whichare more reliable than those fastened byconventional means, adhesive-bondedstructures must be carefully designedand used under conditions which do notexceed the known operation limitationof the adhesive.

This technology is readily accessible inIndia through a few dedicated Explosivecladding manufacturing units, most ofwho are based in and around Hyderabad.As the process involves use ofcommercial explosives, themanufacturing is done at licensedpremises.

First Stainless Steel EMU Rake for Mumbai Suburban

In their plan to modernise the existingsuburban rail networks, Mumbai RailwayVikas Corporation Ltd (MRVC), a PublicSector Undertaking of Govt. of Indiaunder Ministry of Railways, took thedecision to procure first of its kind rakesmade of stainless steel shell & internalfittings for Mumbai suburban rail system.The 12-car rake, developed for the secondphase of the Mumbai Urban Transport

Project (MUTP) of the Mumbai Rail VikasCorporation, will go on a three-month trialin Mumbai’s suburban rail system beforeseries production begins at ICF in May2014. MRVC anticipates that productionof all 72 sets (Total 864 coaches) will becompleted by December 2015.

The rakes has been built at IntegralCoach Factory (ICF), Chennai whichclaims that these prototype rakes hasalso been designed with better passengercomfort and safety features.

Indian Railways has already experiencedthe benefits from the use of stainlesssteel in their long distance coaches andwagons. Riding on the success of Metrorail in Delhi, other metro cities has alsoselected all stainless steel built coachessince it offers long and maintenance freeservice life apart from offering somecrucial properties like improved crashworthiness, good strength to weight ratio,and aesthetics.

We have been informed that ICF lookedto sustain stainless steel body EMUproduction beyond the MUTP as thedesign’s twin benefits of energy efficiencyand eco-friendliness were relevant for thestart-stop nature of suburban operations.

Stainless Steel Fences at Chennai Light House

Chennai boasts many stretches ofbeautiful beaches which together areconsidered to be one of the longest inthe world.

Highly frequented Marina beach is notnew to stainless steel. The beach sideof the wide pedestrian pathway along thelong stretch of coastline was decoratedwith stainless steel hand rails which arestill rust and maintenance free enthusingthe confidence in material in this severeclimatic condition.

Ministry has shortlisted 15 lighthouses,including Mamallapuram, Marakkanam,Kanyakumari and Rameswaram, in thecountry to be made tourist attractions.
