How Can We Reduce The Risk Of Falling?

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) millions of older people—

those 65 and older—fall, every year! The information below is quoted from the CDC

website:

“… one out of three older people falls each year, but less than half tell their doctor. Falling

once doubles your chances of falling again.”

One out of five falls causes a serious injury such as broken bones or a

head injury.

Each year, 2.5 million older people are treated in emergency departments

for fall injuries.

Over 700,000 patients a year are hospitalized because of a fall injury,

most often because of a head injury or hip fracture.

Each year at least 250,000 older people are hospitalized for hip fractures.

More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falling, usually by falling side-

ways.

Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries (TBI).”

As you know, we urge you to let us know if your loved one has fallen at home or out-

side the home. This is for several reasons:

As above, falling once doubles the chances of another fall

The day center will be alerted to this increased risk and can be proactive

in preventing another fall

The day center can also observe for an injury or pain from the fall that

may not have been apparent immediately after the fall

Day center staff and your Family Nurse Consultant may be able to pro-

vide you with helpful tips for reducing the risk of another fall while the

patient is in your care

We have found that when we identify the “root cause” we can be very effective in

preventing another fall or injury.

A root cause is a specific, underlying cause of an event or a problem.

Risk Of Falling?

For example, if your loved one fell, and you noticed that his/her shoe laces were untied, you might reasonably con-

clude that the fall was caused by tripping on the open shoelaces. You might encourage your loved one to wear

shoes with straps or Velcro closures instead to prevent another similar fall.

If your loved one is falling out of a twin size bed, you might conclude that the bed is too narrow. You might get a

new full size mattress, or get a body pillow to try to prevent another such fall.

Did your loved one get any new medications before the fall? Perhaps the medications are increasing his/her fall risk.

You might ask his/her physician to review all of his/her medications and eliminate those that may be increasing fall

risk.

Please continue to let us know if your loved one has a fall. Working together, we can minimize the risk!

Hand painted Wooden Spoon Butterfly

Supplies:

* Wooden Craft Spoons * Craft Paint * Paint Brushes * Colorful Cardstock or Scrapbook Paper * School Glue * Pencil * Scissors * Wiggle Eyes **(optional) – other embellishments like small bows, rhinestones, glitter etc.

Directions:

1. First the fun part! Have everyone paint the wooden spoons howev-er they like. No real rules on this part – let them have fun! Once done, set them all aside to let them dry completely.

2. While those are drying, have everyone trace/cut (help if needed) out their handprint wings for the butterflies {two per butterfly} as well as some antennas from the cardstock paper.

3. Next, simply glue the handprint cutouts to the back of the wooden spoon to create wings, as well as gluing on the antennas & wiggle eyes. Then add other embellishments you see fit {like glitter, rhine-stones etc.} to finish it off and really give them some flair!

4. To display, you can add magnets to the back or hot glue some string for easy hanging!
