You Are Invited To Baptism— Take The Next Step In Your

Journey Peter said to them,” Repent, and be baptized every one

of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Acts 2:38 (NRSV).

Just as baptism represents the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, it symbolizes the death and

burial of the old self of the repentant believer, and the joyous birth of a brand new being in Christ. The Christian Church (Disciples Of Christ) recognizes and celebrates all forms of bap-tism as equal and complete, including infant baptism. Re-baptism is not a requirement of membership into our faith community.

While we practice baptism by immersion, we recognize that all baptisms— in whatever form—unite us to Christ and to each other in faith, mission and community.

We invite anyone who has been a guest at First Chris-tian to contact Rev. Linda if you are interested in being bap-tized or joining the church. You are welcome to give her a call on her cell phone 563-940-8251 or email her at

[email protected].

New Member Class Rev. Linda will hold a information class about joining

and becoming a member at First Christian Church, and learning about the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

denomination on Thursday, April 21 at 6:30 PM or on Sunday, April 24 at 9:00 AM. If you want to learn more or have questions, we hope you can join her in the Gathering Room at the end of the main hall-

way.

Library Renovation

Project A few months ago the board approved the

Membership & Properties Ministry Teams proposal to update our old Library and turn the space into a Gathering Room that could be used for multiple purposes. With plans to put some

type of new flooring and furniture in the room, if the funding for the project could be raised

outside of our church budget. This project has been meet with excitement with many folks—

including an anonymous member who promised to give $500 if the church could match that. To

date we have raised $626 and the first half of the

anonymous donors pledge of $250 making the total so far $876. Let us continue to see the project come to life — and thank you to all

of the donors!

Peace — Rev Linda

Dear Friends of FCC — Our church continues to reach beyond our doors to help others in the name of Christ. The Week of Compassion Special Offering goes to respond to people, throughout the world, in emergency situations. Within days, the team from this Disciples General Ministry takes funds to help people in need. Our church collected in February, $230.00 to go towards Week of Compassion. Thank You!

Greetings in the Name of Christ! Rev. Linda

Last week, our DWF women gathered for their March general meeting and was delighted by Rev. Allison Robuck, a disciple pastor and Young Living Essential Oil distributor. Allison is a wonderful friend of

mine from our time at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Indiana. Allison has been a pastor in our Upper Midwest Region, serving at FCC Minneapolis and West Des Moines Christian Church. She now lives in Little Rock, AK and does supply preaching in addition to teaching people about essential oils. Allison shared an amazing presentation on the 12 Ancient Oils of the Bible. We passed along actual bottles of Myrrh, Frankincense, Calamus, Cedarwood, Cassia, Galbanum, Spikenard, Hyssop, Myrtle, Cypress, and Rose of Sharon to smell and rub just a drop of oil on our hands. We learned how the oils were used in Ancient times for medicine, anointing oil, perfumes, incense, cleansing of lepers, preparing dead bodies, casting out evil spirits, and as an aphrodisiac. Essential Oils were important to the people of Ancient Times. In Proverbs 21:20 it reads: “There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise.” So the question: Why would the possession of oil in one’s house be a sign of wisdom? At least 33 different essential oils or aromatic oil-producing plants are mentioned in the Bible. The word “oil” is mentioned 191 times in the Bible.

Rev. Linda will be out of town on Vacation from Friday April 1 Through April 9th. If there is an Emergency, please contact Moderator Sara Owen, Lead Elder Jeff McWilliams, or contact The office.

While “olive oil” is specifically mentioned only 7 times there are 147 instances where it can be inferred. Olive oil was not only a food, but was burned in lamps for light and used as a base for blending other oils for religious or medicinal purposes. (Reprinted with permission to be given as handouts for Bible Oils Programs From the Book: Healing Oils of the Bible · Copyright © 2003 by David Stewart ) On the 5th Sunday of Lent, I preached on the beautiful story of the unnamed woman who anointed Jesus with an alabaster jar of nard that was quite expensive. So expensive in fact, that the disciples questioned Jesus on the extravagant gift that was supposedly wasted — that they could have sold the jar of 300 denarii (that was about the equivalent of one persons wages for a year). Jesus shut the disciples down quickly, telling them that “Leave her alone. She has done a beautiful thing for me.” Little did any of them really know what Jesus probably meant — that the woman’s extravagant gift was a way to prepare him what was about to come his way. This anointing that Mary lovingly gave Jesus was in preparation for his death. The essential oil she used was spikenard, a very precious and expensive oil. It is harvested by the crushing and bruising of the root of the plant to squeeze the oil from it, and then the oil is used for healing. This is significant, because the oil used to anoint him prior to his death was crushed and bruised in order to be obtained for healing. In the same way, Jesus was bruised and crushed for our sins and died so healing and new life could be given to us.

I pray that your Easter and Lenten time has been healing and has brought you closer to God through Jesus. And know that in all things, Christ is the balm to sooth our soul.

MOVIE TIME!!! The Movie group is going to go again to watch a great Christian movie. God’s Not

Dead 2. We will meet on Tuesday April 12 (Cheap Movie Day) At this time, the movie listing has not been posted, but we will but it in the bulletin and newsflash when it comes available.
