Product Overview:

The use of non-metallic material for the manufacture of manhole frames and covers is fast becoming a necessity for telecommunication and utility service providers, in not only in developing, but also many developed countries. There are many advantages that a non-metallic product offers above it’s metallic equivalent, but the biggest challenge faced when designing such a product, is obtaining a non-metallic material of similar or equivalent strength to metal or ductile iron. This is even more challenging, when faced not only with the high load bearing requirements, but also the products survival, to the onslaught of physical abuse from thieves and fraudsters, trying to gain access to expensive equipment in such chambers. The benefits are however huge if this can be achieved, as no metal content in the product itself removes the attraction to scrap metal value. The lighter weight of such a product also allows for a safer working environment and eliminates the need for expensive lifting apparatus for field staff. The fabrication is cheaper, generally more accurate and faster, as well as easier to handle than the metal equivalents. Corrosion is also not an issue and provided the material is UV stabilised and hard wearing, as well as flame retardant, it can outperform metal equivalents on almost every front.

Material: The product is manufactured from SMC (Sheet Moulded Compound), which is a material in the family of GRP (Glass Reinforced Polymers). SMC however, has a huge advantage over DMC (Dough Moulded Compounds) or BMC (Bulk Moulded Compounds), in that it boasts up to 4 times the Impact strength of these two other GRP products, due to the length and orientation of the fibres in this material. The manufacture of SMC is however specialised and limited, due to the large investment requirement for such a facility, but if resolved, can provide a product with enhanced performance at a lower cost to end customers. In certain applications, SMC can be engineered to achieve tensile strength in excess to that of steel and it is therefore important that the particular SMC profile is maintained in a quality assured facility.

The Product: The design is quite unique in that it addresses all key requirements in this application area, through many years of experience in this harsh environment. These not only focus on the installation and operational requirements, as well as functioning of the product, but also the manufacturing and quality assurance of a product to the end customer. The product handling and packaging requirements are equally important, as the end price to customers is largely dependent on the handling and transportation of frames, covers and copings and in many instances, over large distances. The design of a product which includes the GLAM (GridLock Access Management) system, provides third generation capabilities which go far beyond the physical product requirements. These include centralised access management of such chambers in near real time, as well as GPS (Global Positioning System) auto discovery and grid location of such infrastructure. Additional asset management within these chambers is also provided by this system, with the use of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) Technology. Not only does the product attain the EN-124:1994 Class D400 international standard for static load in roadway applications, but most importantly, it provides a robust solution which can withstand an extreme measure of abuse with tools such as picks, shovels and even a 16 pound hammer. The end result is a quality solution, addressing all customer requirements that can be deployed in both medium and heavy duty applications, with improved performance at a cost which cannot be matched by any metal based equivalent product.
