Thefirft Catalogue fets before him, tinder theName of each Month, all that are then inSeafon^ and informs him whether they areStandard, Dwarf, or Efpalier, by the LettersS. D. E. And likewife what Afpe^ they rC"quire^ by the initial Letters of the fourCardinal Joints, Eaft, Weft, North andSouth.-
^oes he want to know how manySorts there be of any particular Specie, orKind ofn\it ? Let him but turn to the fe-cond Catalogue, and there he will find allthe different Sorts brought together under thekinds they belong to : As for example^ allSorts of Apples under the word Apples, all forts of Pears under the word Pears,e^r. Would he be informed whatFruit-Trees jhotdd be planted againft each ofhis Garden Walls ? The third Catalogue ofAfpefts will teach htm fully, Or defireshe to fee at once what Trees are proper forStandards, Dwarfs, ^I'r Efpaliers ? The fitteflfor either of thefe Vurpofes are ranged to-gether in a Fourth Catalogue for his Infor^mation, -And as there arefame uncommonFruits, which are beautiful to the Eye^ butunfit for eatings a Lift of them is alfoadded.

Thus much I imagine needful towardsunderftanding this little Book ; and whatfollows^ in relation to myfelf will be I hopeexcufedy fince it is intended only to fatisfythe Curiofity of thofe who do not know me^and may perhaps for that Reafon have theworfe Opinion of my Performances,

THE RE are cenain Terms ufed in {peaking of Fruits, which perhaps will not be thought improper to be in-
ferted in a Work of this Kind. We lay o^ Fruits, that theyare

Of the Flfjh or Pulp we fay, it h

The Flavour, Colour, Time of Ripening, Size and Gcod^nefs of Fruits, vary a great deal, according to the Soil andScituation, and as the Scajbn proves either cold or hot, wet ordry.Fruits of a good Kind, planted in a proper Soil, and to-
wards the right Afpedl, will ulhally anfwer the Charader theybear: But by an ill Soil, too much Shade, or a wrong Ex-pofure, they will loie their fine Taile and Colour, and be goodfor little.
It has been obferved that fuch Fruits, as grow on D-xiv??;/}or Efpaliers, are better tafted, and will keep longer than tholeagainil Walls; but are not fo large and beautiful.
All Fruits ihould be gathered prudently, and eat feafo-nably.
