InDenmarkhowever,itistaughtinschool,morethan15bookshavebeenwrittenaboutit(both

factualandfictional)andtherehasevenbeenanoperaandaballet.Ifeelhonoredand

extremelyluckytofinallybringthefullstorytothescreen.

Tonally,Iwasinspiredbythegreatepicsfromthe40sand50swherefilmswouldoftenfeellike

literaryworks,structuredaroundcharactersandthepassageoftime, andnotclearlyfollowingtheobviousscreenplayroadmaps.

ButmycreativeteamandIwerealsofiredupbytheideaofbringingtheScandinavianhistorical

dramaintothenewcentury.Wewantedtoachievethisbyadheringtoaselfimposedrule;we

didntwanttoshowhistory,didntwanttodwellpointlesslyonthebigofficialevents,the

fancydressesandhairdos,orthewaythefoodwasserved.

Rather,wewantedpeopletosimplyexperiencethestorythroughtheeyesofthecharacters,

takingthe1760sforgranted.Eventhoughtheperiodisobviouslythereinthesetdesigns,the

costumesitwasfilmedandeditedaswewouldhavefilmedandeditedafilmtakingplacein

modernCopenhagen.

Finally,GabrielYaredandCyrilleAufortsbeautifulscorehasbroughtthefilmfullcircle,and

hometoitsepicroots.
