BIG PLANS

3PAGE:

Atlanta

We give sincere thanks to the Atlanta community for its continued support of our mission throughout our history

1979Atlanta’s first Ronald McDonald House located at 792 Houston Mill Road opened with eight bedrooms before eventually expanding to 16 bedrooms. This House which opened as the fourth Ronald McDonald House in the world, hosted more than 24,000 families before closing in 2007 to make way for a newer larger House.

Atlanta Ronald McDonald House CharitiesKeeping Families Close Since 1979

1994The continued commitment of volunteers and donors including he Greater Atlanta McDonald’s Operators, and Scottish Rite Children’s Medical Center (now Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta), helped build a second Atlanta Ronald McDonald House at 5420 Peachtree Dunwoody Road. This House opened in June 1994 with 11 bedrooms and hosted more than 10,000 families before closing in 2014 to prepare for the expansion.

2005With only 27 bedrooms and an average stay of eight nights, the two Atlanta Houses continually operated at or near capacity with a waiting list almost every night for five years. In 2005 plans for expansion began to meet the growing demand. 2008

A capital campaign to build a new House near Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston was completed to replace the original House located on Houston Mill Road. In June of 2008, the new 50-bedroom House on Gatewood Road opened to serve families. The 60,871 sq. ft. facility features a transplant wing for children who have received heart, liver, kidney or bone marrow transplants.

2015In December 2015, the new 31-bedroom House near Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite opened its doors to replace the original House at that location. The project resulted in a 52,636 sq. ft. House that includes an indoor 3-story tree house and improved ADA accessibility.

I was once a simple house

Originally built in 1942 as a single family home, in 1994 I was made into something much more — a Ronald McDonald House. I became a safe haven for families of sick and injured children receiving treatment at local hospitals. I am now a supportive, loving “home away from home” for families when they need it most. As my purpose

grew, so too did the need for space. With support from kind and compassionate people, big plans were made for me. The transformation and results were spectacular and today…

I am The House That Love Built.

MEET ONE OF MY familiesthe redmon family

THE REDMONS STAYED AT THE FIRST ATLANTA RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE NEAR CHILDREN’S HEALTHCARE OF ATLANTA AT SCOTTISH RITE FOR 9 MONTHS DURING THEIR ORIGINAL STAY

What brought you to the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House?

Bob: Eric was involved in a single-car accident and was life-flighted from Commerce, GA to Grady Hospital. We began staying at the original House near Scottish Rite for Eric’s rehab.

What did it mean to you to be with other families at the House?

Eric: It was motivational for me to be with the other kids. We played cards together. We bonded and motivated each other and became a team.

How much did it mean to have your family together at the House?

Angie: It was huge. As a mother you always want your family together. So to have that while we were going through what we were…it meant so much. Eric’s sister would visit sometimes on the weekends from college and we were always told there was a place for her. It was rewarding for her, too. She now has three children of her own and at their birthday parties they ask for donations and gifts for the House instead of presents.

What can you say about the House staff?

Angie: The staff has grown so much. But I’ll say this, even then there was the same attentiveness and care. And it continues all day long. The staff is on top of everything. When we come back to visit they all still know us and we still receive the same warm welcome.

The late Emil Schoeman and Jim Barnes, both individually and as members of the Greater Atlanta McDonald’s Operators Association, contributed generously to support our mission, beginning with the opening of the first Atlanta Ronald McDonald House. We are grateful to Ruth Schoeman and Nancy Barnes for continuing to provide financial support in their memory.

Mr and Mrs. Barnes Mr and Mrs.Schoeman

A LEGACY OF COMPASSION

our mission partner

For more than 40 years McDonald’s has opened their hearts to us. Providing an invaluable partnership, McDonald’s has supported us every step of the way, fueling our growth from the original House to where we are today. Thanks to the unwavering support we receive from our Atlanta area McDonald’s restaurants and Owner/Operators, we are able to impact countless lives by giving children support, stability and the best medicine of all — their families by their side.

PAGE: 7

FROM THE MOMENT THE DOORS OPENED AT THE FIRST RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE IN PHILADELPHIA, THE MCDONALD’S SYSTEM MADE UP OF OWNER/OPERATORS, SUPPLIERS, EMPLOYEES AND CUSTOMERS, HAVE CALLED OUR MISSION THEIR OWN.

What drew you to the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House?

Bob: Back in the 70’s Philadelphia opened the first House. A group of Atlanta Owner/Operators said we have Egleston — why don’t we open a House? The Atlanta McDonald’s Co-Op voted unanimously to build a House. I’ve been involved ever since and it’s been a great ride!

What’s your fondest memory of the House?

Wanda: Meeting the beautiful family who were the first to stay here at the new House. To know what the child had been through and to see the love that he shared was an inspiration. I’ll always treasure that moment and the hugs I got from the family. It will be dear to me forever.

How long have you been involved with the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House?

I’ve supported the House for years through McDonald’s. I was part of the group who helped open the original House here in Atlanta.

What motivates you to stay involved with the House?

We’d all like to leave some form of a legacy. But for me it’s not a personal legacy. It’s knowing that there’s something good that comes out of being involved here. This House has done so much for so many. I want to be involved with that legacy.

supporting the house is a way to help change a dire situation for families. the care here is real.

What do you wish others knew about the House?

The culture within the House is much bigger than the Charity. I wish we were able to spread that culture of caring and love everywhere in our society.

How do you define success as it relates to the House?

Seeing the parents’ gratitude — the smiles on their faces during the toughest times of their lives. I get emotional talking about it. I’m extremely proud to be a McDonald’s Owner/Operator but this is by far the greatest thing the corporation does. To be able to help ease the parent’s minds is the best thing we do.

MEET some OF MY donors

What interests you most about donating to the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House?

Helping the kids. We have friends who ask “Isn’t it sad going there?” It’s the absolute opposite. You walk away realizing how blessed you are. You see a child battling who’s still laughing and it warms your heart. To be a part of that...it’s almost selfish.

What do you tell others about the House?

Get involved. There’s so many ways to help. From pop tops to serving meals to donating change at the Mc Donald’s drive through. It may seem small but it all adds up to a huge contribution. You receive much more than you gave

What’s your favorite part of the new House?

It’s just cool! The treehouse is great. The kids can’t wait to climb the stairs and play in it. But it’s more than that. It’s warming and inviting. It’s comfortable. It’s a place are treated with dignity and respect. It’s a healing place.

What’s the important thing the House does?

Helping families and children. It’s a simple mission but it’s complex to execute. Helping these kids and their families go through an incredibly stressful time in their life is a big deal. The divorce rate of marriages with sick children is off the charts. To be able to hopefully keep the family unit together through what they’re dealing with is a miracle right there.

fundraising isn't the easy part. it took alot of people giving 125%. they're busy and they go above and beyond to get out and tell the story of the house.

MEET ONE OF MY volunteers

How long have you been volunteering at the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House?

My wife and I have been coming to the Houses for about 13 years. We really enjoy helping out. I visit each House weekly to stock the pantry supplies and I also enjoy taking the kids outside to play. It’s easy to get hooked!

What’s your fondest memory of the House?

I met a child who was told he’d never walk and was downtrodden. I told him we don’t know what our lives hold hold and I encouraged him. Within six months he got up and walked. Even though I get attached to the children, the best days I have are when they’re finally able to leave here and go home!

What’s surprised you most about your time at the House?

How great the staff is. They are such sincere people. From the top down, every single person is committed to the families. These folks come in from a long day at the hospital and they need a place where they can feel warmth. That’s what the staff provides, a home away from home.

What’s been the most satisfying part of volunteering at the House?

The wonderful families I’ve met. Some have become lifelong friends. You get attached to them and stay in touch. I get much more out of it than they do.

i've met so many wonderful people here. One now lives in atlanta and calls to give me updates. he's seven years old!

MEET ONE OF MY staff members

How did you decide to take a job at the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House?

I stopped by to volunteer and the House Manager asked if I’d like to work here. At the time I wasn’t ready to commit, so she asked if I could cover the July 4th weekend. I agreed and that was 18 years ago! I’ve been here ever since!

What do you like most about your job?

I like the feeling of pulling away in the evening and knowing that we’ve touched 81 families that night. Very few people can say that about their job.

What’s surpised you most about working at the House?

The passion of the staff. It’s a pleasure to work with a staff that genuinely wants to help these families every single day. It’s a different person who’s working here vs. a typical corporate job. Their commitment to the families is unwavering.

What do you wish people knew about the House?

I once stood in the Houston Mill House watching people in traffic and thought they must be frustrated about their situation. Then I thought about how the struggles of the people in this House are so much greater. I wish people understood that and helped out however they could.

the new house IS GREAT! it took a lot of hard work by so many. to see it all come together is awesome.

stronger togethermessage from our president & ceo

The story of the expansion of the Atlanta Ronald McDonald Houses began twelve years ago as our Board of Directors were led by an ambitious vision — to someday have a room, a bed, for every family in need. With just 27 bedrooms and a waiting list most nights, we hoped to serve three times as many families in need. Today, with a capacity of 81 bedrooms, and even more program expansion on the horizon, we are proud we were able to make this dream a reality. The growth of our Houses would not be possible without a very dedicated group of Board members, donors, staff and volunteers who choose to invest their time, resources and hearts into advancing our mission.

Our new 31-bedroom Ronald McDonald House near Scottish Rite, stands as a monument to the generosity of the Atlanta community. We are inspired every day by the families, volunteers and friends who step through our doors, whether to explore the canopy of our three-story Healing Tree or to share a meal. We are so proud to offer families of sick and injured children this new “home away from home.” It will make a difference in their lives and the lives of thousands of families for years to come.

Thank you,

Rich DeAugustinis Vice Chair
