As one of the oldest country clubs in the United States, The Rockaway Hunting Club has always been at the forefront of the American sports scene. In its early days, Rockaway hosted sporting events such as fox hunting, polo and steeplechase. In the late 1800’s American sporting interests began to change, with golf and racquet sports emerging as the preferred recreational activities for the New York City elite. Rockaway built some of the f inest facilities to accommodate these changing tastes. Today, The Rockaway Hunting Club is home to 25 tennis courts and a historic seaside golf course.

The Rockaway Hunting Club’s 18-Hole Championship golf course measures 6, 452 yards, with a 133 slope and 71.4 rating from the men’s tees. The original course was constructed in 1900 by T. Bendelow and modif ied in 1915 by Devereux Emmet. Over the years, additional renovations to the golf course were completed by legendary golf course architects A.W. Tillinghast and Gil Hanse. Hanse’s renovation was completed in 2016 and capitalizes on Rockaway’s location adjacent to Brosewere Bay. The seaside links design challenges golfers with ocean breezes, wispy fescue, numerous bunkers, manicured fairways, and f irm, fast greens throughout the course. The par 4 , 454-yard ninth hole is rated by Golf Magazine as one of the top 100 golf holes in America , and Golf Digest rated The Rockaway Hunting Club the #7 Best Restoration in 2015 .

Racquet Sports have enjoyed a distinguished place in history at The Rockaway Hunting Club. The club has 18 immaculately manicured grass tennis courts and 7 state-of-the-art, Har-Tru tennis courts. They are complemented by 2 platform tennis courts, 3 singles squash courts and 1 doubles squash court. The grass tennis courts are some of the f inest on the East Coast and often hosted practice in the week leading up to the US Open, when it was played on grass

courts nearby in Forest Hills. The Rockaway Hunting Club is one of two clubs that have the longest-running interclub tennis tournament in the United States–The Challenge Cup. Matches rotate each year between the home courts at Rockaway and Seabright Lawn Tennis & Cricket Club, in Rumson, New Jersey. Rockaway is also host to the Gold Racquets, the nation’s oldest invitational squash tournament.
