Define Yourself as a LeaderActivate YourLeadership PotentialThere are two dimensions to activating yourleadership potential, according to GeorgeBradt, Jayme Check and Jorge Pedraza inThe New Leader’s 100-DayAction Plan. The first is understanding and declaringyour own leadership qualities and capabilities. The second is interacting effectively withothers in such a way that it becomes part ofan organization’s or a market’s perceptionof you.The “declaring” part is important since

this is what best enables you to commit toyour career path. Start by declaring this toyourself. Commit yourself. Your commitmentswill become more real as you share themwith others.Once you’ve gotten a good handle on your

strengths and goals, you are ready to thinkthrough positioning in a proactive andmethodical way. So, start by understandingyour existing strengths and talents that canbe turned into strengths appropriate to meetyour long-term goals. Then, communicate yourreadiness for leadership by leading somethingwhether it’s a major project or the team outing.Focus on Strengths,Compensate for WeaknessesIn research shared by authors John Zenger,Joseph Folkman and Scott Edinger in TheInspiring Leader, groups were told to thinkabout a leader who they would consider

extraordinary. Then they were asked, “What didthat leader do exceptionally well? What were thatleader’s strengths?” The answers were:• The leader had a clear vision andcommunicated it effectively.• The leader drove hard for exceptional results.• The leader cared about and developed people.• The leader had high integrity and honesty.• The leader was technically savvy. When asked if the leader had any weaknesses,

nearly everyone could identify a weakness, even in these extraordinary leaders. Often theweaknesses were not trivial. Some leaderslacked the ability to think strategically, whileothers had difficulty staying on top of theadministrative details of their position. Somelacked people skills and preferred to “hole up”in their office. Others were novices regardingthe technology of the business. All leaders seem to have some weaknesses, but extraordinary leaders have profoundstrengths and use a variety of mechanismsto compensate for any weaknesses. In somecases, that means hiring someone withcomplementary skills. In other cases, it meansrestructuring the job so others perform theactivities that the executive struggles with. Many people focus their developmentefforts on the things they don’t do well. The

problem with this approach is that, typically, people are not very interested in or passionateabout their most significant weaknesses and, therefore, they don’t improve much.

HSM Audio SummariesHighlights from the World Business Forum and World Innovation Forum

Are your employees more likely to remember something they read or something they heard someone say? Your Soundview Corporate Solution features two unique audio tools that provide quick, memorable conversations with some of the most important people in the business world.

Soundview Author Insights are 10-minute MP3 audio clips that feature a best-selling business book author discussing the essential knowledge your staff needs to learn from his or her book. Unlike a mass media interview that asks the same tired question (“So, what can you tell us about your book?”), Soundview Author Insights are solely dedicated to a business audience. They allow the author to speak directly to the people who matter most: you and your employees.

HSM Audio Summaries provide your staff with short recaps of presentations from two of the most anticipated events on the business calendar: HSM’s World Business Forum and World Innovation Forum. The summaries contain actual audio from each live presentation. With a single ticket to these events going for as much as $2,500, HSM Audio Summaries are an efficient, affordable way to give your staff all the important takeaways without ever having to leave the office.

What Will World Business Forum Speakers Teach Your Staff?Jim Collins: The Five Stages of Decline for Once-Great CompaniesJack Welch: Leadership in the Global MarketplaceA.G.
