Area & Perimeter Project Module 3 Lessons 17-20 You have been given the opportunity to paint a mural on a large wall. First, you have to design your mural on graph paper (or you can use the given mural design for the project) . Once you design your mural, you will need to calculate the total area of the the figure on the graph paper. Use this information to help you determine the cost to paint the mural. Your mural must be an abstract design and it needs to contain circles, squares, rectangles, parallelograms, semi circles, quarter circles, triangles and trapezoids (minimum one of each shape) . The paint you need for the mural comes in pint size containers. Each pint of paint costs $13.59 and will cover about 25 square feet. Use a scale of 1 cm to 1 foot for your drawing. Your mural must designed with at least 3 different colors. You may use complex shapes and outlines to include perimeter/outline colors in your mural. Part 1 Vocabulary Work with your group or partner to define and draw images the vocabulary. You may use your prior knowledge, Chromebooks, textbooks or another resource. Part 2 Formulas Work with your group or partner to find the formulas for each of the shapes provided. You may use your prior knowledge, Chromebooks, textbooks or another resource. Part 3 Class Examples We’ll work through some problems together where we calculate the area of complex shapes. Part 4 Problems You will work through several problems to demonstrate your knowledge of calculating area and perimeter of basic shapes and complex figures. Part 5 Design and Calculate You will be working on this portion of the project during the entire project duration. As you design, remember that you have to do calculations with it and that there are many criteria to the design. Consider outlines (they add visual interest) and use of color (at least 3 colors are required). Keep it simple enough that you are able to calculate the area, and interesting enough that you would WANT to paint it or look at it.

Part 3 Class Examples We’ll work through some of the problems together where we calculate the area of complex shapes.
1. Find the area of the rectangle. Name two ways we can calculate the area.
2. Find the length of a rectangle if the area is 27 square centimeters and the width is 3 cm.
3. A sprinkler rotates in a circular pattern and sprays water over a distance of 12 feet. What is the area of the circular region covered by the sprinkler? Express your answer to the nearest square foot. Draw a diagram to assist you in solving the problem. What does the distance of 12 feet represent in this problem?
4. Ally is making a circular table out of a square piece of wood. The radius of the circle that she is cutting is 3 feet. How much waste will she have for this project? Express your answer to the nearest square foot. Draw a diagram to assist you in solving the problem. What does the distance of 3 feet represent in this problem?

5. A path bounds a circular lawn at a park. If the inner edge of the path is 132 ft. around, approximate the amount of area of the lawn inside the circular path. Use ≈ 7
22
6. The area of a circle is 36 square centimeters . Find its circumference.
7. Find the ratio of the area of two circles with radii 3 cm and 4 cm.
8. Mia is designing a new set of placemats for her dining room table. She sketched a drawing of the placement on graph paper. The diagram represents the area of the placemat consisting of a rectangle and two semicircles at either end. Each square on the grid measures 4 inches in length. Find the area of the entire placemat. Explain your thinking regarding the solution to this problem. If Mia wants to make six placemats, how many square inches of fabric will she need? Assume there is no waste. Mia decides that she wants to sew on a contrasting band of material around the edge of the placemats. How much band material will Mia need?
9. The circumference of a circle is 24 cm. What is the exact area of the circle? Draw a diagram to assist you in solving the problem.
