SCE’s TOU-8 Rate – Demand verses Energy Charges

SCE’s TOU-8 Rate, 2-50 kV Service

• Demand charges are additive for many buildings– (Summer peak period is noon to 6pm, June thru September, 4 months)

• Summer demand charges include: + $ 23.74/kW during peak period

+ $ 14.88/kW for the facilities related demand

• What the heck is a facilities demand charge?– It’s a 2nd demand charge for high peak demand that occurs during the

previous month….independent of the time of day. It is defined in the rate sheet as follows:

”The Facilities Related Component shall be for the kW of Maximum Demand recorded during (or established for) the monthly billing period.”

$38.62/kW

SCE’s TOU-8 Rate, 2-50 kV Service

• In the winter (October through May) there is no peak period, the mid peak period covers the day.

• If we assume the building is an office, school or a building with a similar cooling load profile the peak is likely to occur in the afternoon.

• Thus, at this time the demand savings would be derived from reducing the size of facilities related demand …..and this is a significant charge:

$14.88/kW

SCE’s TOU-8 Rate, Summary

• The demand charges are significantly large and make day time energy costs expensive, FOR THE RIGHT BUILDING.

• There are potentially large savings when shifting load in a daytime peaking building.

• Electricity in the summer is approximately 79% cheaper at night

• Electricity in the winter is approximately 50% cheaper at night
