Link Your Kroger Plus Card to RHS PTSA

Kroger Gift Cards benefiting RHS Renaissance are a separate program from the KrogerPlus Neighbor to Neighbor program benefiting RHS PTSA. All Neighbor to Neighbor information is deleted by Kroger annually April 30. You must re-link your card for next school year.

Enrollment for 2013-2014 Program Year isJune 1, 2013-December 31, 2013Starting June 1, 2013 please link your KrogerPlus Card with RHS PTSA by

presenting the barcode below to your Kroger cashier when you checkout. After they have scanned your KrogerPlus Card, you will be enrolled for the upcoming school year of the Kroger Neighbor to Neighbor Donation Program. Every time you shop at Kroger and use your enrolled KrogerPlus Card, Kroger will contribute a percentage of your eligible purchases to the Kroger Neighbor to Neighbor Donation fund. The fund will send a check to the PTSA in May. Once a card is scanned with the barcode, it will be active for the remainder of the program year. Last year, RHS PTSA earned $1088, and this year our goal is at least to double that amount!

The current Neighbor to Neighbor Program is effective July 1, 2012 to April 30, 2013. The system allows for one organization per household at a time. To change organizations, you must present your KrogerPlus Card and the barcode below to the cashier. For more information on this fundraiser for RHS, contact Cheri Dixon at [email protected]. Additional information is available at www.krogerneighbortoneighbor.com.

Kroger cashier: Please scan customer’s KrogerPlus Card at the beginning of the order, and then scan the above barcode. The customer’s KrogerPlus Card is now enrolled in the Kroger Neighbor to Neighbor Donation Program.

Thank you to all RHS families & faculty who used their reloadable Kroger Gift Cards from 6/1/12 to 3/29/13. Since June 1, 2012 we have achieved over $10,000 in reloads and raised over $500 for the Renaissance Program!

If you have a Gift Card and have not recently used it, please help us out and reload. If you don’t already have a Kroger Gift Card and wish to participate, we have more for sale at $1 per card.

This is a great way to generate income for the Renaissance Program while feeding your family or by purchasing fuel at Kroger gas pumps. For more information on this fundraiser for RHS, contact Cheri Dixon at [email protected].

Ryan High School PTSA/renaissanceBoard Positions Available

There are still some openings available on the 2013 - 2014 board. These positions are a chance for you to serve the school community, as well as an opportunity to network with other parents, faculty and staff. You can spend as little or as much time as you desire.

Parents who have participated have found this avenue of volunteering quite beneficial. Most of the parents serving on these committees work full-time, but choose to carve out a piece of their free time to devote to supporting their students’ high school experience.

So please come join us (no matter if your student is an incoming freshman or a graduating senior next year.) If you are interested in being a part of the volunteer fun at RHS, please contact Karen Fortune at 940-387-8036.

The proposed slate of officers and committee chairs will be posted on the PTSA webpage of the Ryan High School website, www.dentonisd.org/ryanhs.

Voting for the 2013-2014 officers will take place at the General Meeting to be held on May 20, 2011 at Los Toreros Mexican Restaurant, 2900 Wind River Lane, Denton, 940-891-1700.

Volunteer Hours Count!please turn in Your Volunteer hours

Thank you very much to all those who contributed their valuable time this year by volunteering in one capacity or another! You have helped to make Ryan a better school for our students and staff just by getting involved. Since many factors influence the district’s bond rating, including the level of community support, it is very important to report your volunteer hours. The better the bond rating, the less it costs the district to sell the bonds (meaning less in taxes to property owners.) Every hour that we can record enhances the district’s profile and saves us tax dollars.

Remember to report hours (students, too) for assisting one of the many booster clubs or organizations. This includes Grad Night, shopping and bringing food for the Renaissance Breakfasts, serving as a chaperone on a school-sponsored trip, folding newsletters, working concessions, making phone calls, logging computer time, or helping in any other myriad of things.

Please continue to send your volunteer hours through the end of the year to Jenifer Fuller, Volunteer Coordinator, at [email protected], with “Volunteer Hours” in the subject line. Also, be sure to keep track of any summer volunteer hours and report them to Jenifer in August.

Thanks again for making Ryan High the Home of Champions!

Special thanks to Barnes & Noble! They donated fabric tote bags to the RHS English Department. The bags make it much easier on the teachers hauling dictionairies to and from the testing rooms.

Renaissance would like to thank Chick-fil-A, who provided breakfast sandwiches for our most recent Renais-sance awards breakfast. The next breakfast will take place on April 18th. Many thanks, also, to our breakfast coordinator, Amanda McLeod!

GradeSpeed, Parent Connection

GradeSpeed is a web tool that allows parents and students to access their grades and assignments online. Go to the “For Parents” tab on the www.dentonisd.org web page and look for “Parent Connection” listed in the left column. To register, you must have the student ID number and select a password. After registering, you’ll be able to click on your student’s class grade to see his or her individual grades. Please remember that this is a work in continual progress. Some grades will not be posted until a class set is graded. If a 0 or MSG is recorded, it usually means the assignment was not turned in. Teachers may be contacted by email with their first initial followed by last name @dentonisd.org.

Test-Taking Tips• Avoid cramming – start reviewing study materials

after you register for the test! • Get enough sleep during the 2-3 days prior to the

test.• Make sure you know the location of your testing

site.• Get up early and eat a good breakfast – food for

your brain! • Make sure you have all your materials with you

– photo ID, a simple four-function calculator, two #2 pencils, a good eraser, your social security number if required, and a jacket.

• Arrive at least 30 minutes early on the morning of the test.

• LISTEN TO and READ the directions carefully. • Budget your test-taking time. • Change positions or stretch to relax yourself

during the test.• Use ALL the time you are given, if needed. There’s

no reward for being the first one to finish. • Keep on task – take questions step by step, and

one at a time. • Use positive self-talk; avoid self-criticism.

Acknowledge that you are doing your best. • Relax – you are in control. Take slow, deep

breaths, and keep focused on your actions, not what others are doing.

AP U.S. History Study sessions are Thursday afternoons in Room 206. The AP U.S History practice exam at RHS is Tuesday, April 9 at 5:00. There is also a practice exam at GHS on Saturday, April 13 at 8:00 AM.

End of School Year 2013Students’ 2013-2014 course selections will be mailed

home on Wednesday, April 3. If parents and students de-sire any changes to the requested course selections, they should note the changes on the course selection sheet, SIGN it, and return to the RHS Counseling Office no later than Friday, May 3. Remember that staffing decisions are based on our course selection during spring and sched-ule changes will not be done for any reason except for failures, missing classes, or missing graduation require-ments after that date.

If parents or students have any questions regard-ing course selections, counselors will be available from 6:30-7:30 p.m., April 10 and 11. A mandatory dual credit presentation will be offered each evening at 6:30 p.m. for upcoming juniors and seniors interested in enrolling in a dual credit course on the RHS campus. A mandatory Pre-AP presentation will also be held each evening at 6:30 p.m. for any upcoming freshmen enrolled in a Pre-AP class; their parents should attend also.

TAKS testing is April 22-25 for 11th graders and some seniors. STAAR testing for 9th and 10th graders will take place on various dates in May, as will Advanced Place-ment testing. Please go to the Testing Center site on the RHS website for details. You will find that under the Student Services tab.

Seniors will take final exams May 28-30. Graduation will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, June 7, at UNT’s Coli-seum. Any senior wishing to walk at graduation needs to attend the rehearsal on Wednesday, June 5, at 12:30 p.m. in the RHS gymnasium.

The counselors encourage current juniors to consider taking the SAT or ACT this spring. For the SAT, there is a May 4 test with a registration deadline of April 5 and a June 1 test with a registration deadline of May 2. For the ACT, there is a June 8 testing date with a registration deadline of May 3.

Students who want to attend Denton ISD summer school should listen to the announcements in May, when applications will become available. Students may take up to two semesters of credit for a $200 fee. Courses are available for retrieval of credit. The only classes available for student advancement are government, economics, and speech.

Raider Senior Walk of FameWe are pleased to let senior parents know that we are

beginning a new tradition to honor our graduates. We call it the Walk of Fame and we would love to invite you to be part of this event, which will take the place of the Senior Awards Ceremony we have previously held in the evening. This year’s ceremony will be held on Monday, May 20, at 9:45 a.m.

One very important aspect of the Walk of Fame cel-ebration will be the announcement of scholarships and other awards. Our senior class is a remarkable group of students. They will be receiving a number of honors, and we wish to honor all recipients. Therefore, please be certain that if your child has received a scholarship or other award, he or she lists that on the Naviance Family Connection survey set up for that purpose. You can find that on your child’s Naviance site under the About Me tab. Surveys appear on the left.

In addition to recognizing scholarship and award win-ners, the ceremony is designed to honor all of our seniors and provide a symbolic “closing” to their high school days at Ryan, as well as a chance to pass the torch to the juniors.

As parents, you have been such an integral part of your child’s high school success and we do hope you will be able to join us to celebrate the end of one journey and the beginning of another. The ceremony will begin PROMPT-LY at 9:45 a.m., so please arrive early enough to park and be seated.

Perfect Attendance Celebration

Tuesday, May 21

Students must have perfect attendance for the previous six weeks with no tardies or detentions. A list of eligible students will be posted one or two days before the celebration.

Willkommen Beim German ClubParents, if your child is in our German program, please encourage him or her to take more than the minimum of two years of foreign language. Our German 3 and 4 classes are small and offer a great environment to study German beyond the basic language.

The German Club at Ryan acquired several new movies this spring, among those “Die Nacht im Museum” (The Night at the Museum) and “Madagaskar”. A favorite game in some classes and in the Club remains the German version of Monopoly.

Ryan offers the whole language program from level 1 through AP 4. World language AP courses are college level and are vital for students who want to apply at top universities. Our German Club invites everyone interested in German language, culture, sports, and history. We usually meet once a month on a Wednesday after school in Mr. Dettmer’s class room. Students at Ryan can also get a German pen pal and communicate with a teenager in Europe.

Juniors It is time to start thinking about senior pictures. Yearbook pictures are taken by Prestige Studios in Lewisville. You may call the studio to get the times for “Yearbook Only” where they will take your yearbook photo. There is no charge for this. You may also set up an appointment for a full sitting but there is a fee for this service. We would like to have as many students photographed as possible during the summer. By going during the summer you will have the chance to select your pose. Call 972-669-9200 for an appointment or more information.

RHS Learning TechnologiesIn an ongoing effort at providing Ryan High School students with impactful learning opportunities, we’re excited to announce the addition of two carts of iPad minis for student use. A cadre of twenty teachers, representing the core academic areas as well as world languages, is undergoing training on the use and imple-mentation of iPads in the classroom. The iPad offers the most unique and up-to-the-minute applications for learning in many subject areas and offers both faculty and students the opportunity to have hands-on experience with their subject areas outside the realm of just textbooks, enabling them to explore various higher level learning objectives through modern technology. Students will benefit from personalized learning, high engagement with curriculum, easy internet access, access to e-texts, powerful simulations, and a wealth of educational apps. Learn more at www.dentonisd.org/rhsipad.
