CCSC Launches Pilot Caregiver ProgramCCSC believes that all people should have access to fulfilling
work that allows them to meet their needs and achieve
their dreams. Our employment programs meet participants
where they are, provide possibilities that fit their individual
situations, equip them with tools for success, and offer ongoing
support on their career journeys. Our new pilot Professional
Home Caregiver Training Program will realize this vision
by preparing participants for careers as nonmedical direct
care workers.
Sometimes known as personal care aides, direct care workers
assist older adults and people with disabilities with daily
activities such as bathing, personal hygiene, moving around
their homes, meal preparation and remembering to take
medication in the prescribed manner. They also provide
important social and cognitive engagement for their clients.
“CCSC’s pilot Professional Home Caregiver Training Program
is unique in that it not only equips people with the skills and
knowledge to work as professional home caregivers, but it
also prepares participants to build their own businesses, work
private duty or work for a home care agency,” said Program
Coordinator Jenny Ryan.
The pilot program emerged from the work of the volunteer-
led Vocational Training Committee appointed by CCSC’s
Board of Directors in late 2017. The committee was formed to
determine whether CCSC should add a new vocational training
program that could build on the success of its Martha’s Way
entrepreneurial training program in residential housekeeping.
“The committee was given wide latitude to explore potential
vocational training options,” Committee Chair Stephanie
Koecher said. “We wanted to focus on vocations that are
accessible to those struggling with self-sufficiency, are in high
demand, provide a starting wage above the minimum, and are
not freely offered in our community.”
As one of the fastest-growing occupations in the region and
a vocation of interest to CCSC’s clients, caregiving was a
natural fit. Many individuals enter the field with little to no
training and burnout is high. CCSC’s training program will
provide the tools caregivers need to find success. The 50+
hour curriculum was developed by Tammy Mermelstein,
the director of the Collaboratory for Aging Resources
and Education in Houston, and it includes instruction in
dementia, relationship building, professional boundaries,
self-care and ethics as well as content on small-business
development and training in technical skills.
CCSC’s pilot class graduates
this month ready to start
or continue their careers in
nonmedical caregiving. One
of the best ways you can
help support this program
is by hiring a graduate or
sharing information about
how to hire a graduate.

Michelle ShonbeckMichelle Shonbeck
Dear CCSC Friend,
In the early days of COVID—when we were adapting our
disaster plan into a pandemic plan and trying to find our
footing—I was walking through one of the food pantries and
sat down near an older woman whose face said “I am terrified.”
It turns out she was raising her grandchildren and wasn’t
sure how she was going to take care of their needs during
the pandemic. She owned a small home and had a limited
retirement income. Her grandchildren ate breakfast and lunch
at school, allowing her to stretch this income to cover their
other basic needs. With school shut down, how would she feed
them? She was way past retirement and, anyway, who wanted to
hire a 78 year old who was hard of hearing? And who was hiring?
These were her words to me, said in despair.
We think about this grandmother and others in need when
we think about how to ensure the ministry is steady during
rocky times. CCSC is superb at compiling statistics, which is
important. Yet, it is often individual stories that drive the small
and big decisions we make to ensure our programs operate
fairly and with ease.
How will she feed the children? How will the niece who cares for
her disabled uncle pay for their apartment rent when her hours
have been temporarily cut? Where do you go to apply online for a
job when you don’t have a computer and other public spaces are
closed? How do you provide your children with school supplies
when you’re barely putting food on the table? Where do you go
to update your resume and job skills in the current employment
market? Where do you go if you need coaching, not only for a job
but also for overall household security? What if you want to be an
entrepreneur but your skills and educational level lend themselves
more to the service industry?
We help people answer these questions.
We see everyone as a child of God, worthy of our best.
We’ve lived our 40th anniversary by serving an unprecedented
number of families.
We don’t know what 2021 will bring, but we trust in God’s
guidance, presence, and provision.
Thank you for sticking by us through this strange year. We
commit to you what we have pledged throughout our history:
a Christ-centered culture of compassion, stewardship, and
accountability.
In Christ,
Michelle Shonbeck

Houston Junior Forum volunteers are like the cavalry in striped aprons—they always arrive
when you need them and get the job done.
HJF, a nonprofit women’s service organization, is committed to serving children, youth,
women and senior adults in the greater Houston area, a goal that dovetails perfectly with
CCSC’s mission to serve the poor, hungry, disabled and otherwise needy.
“Both organizations are dedicated, committed, hardworking and compassionate,” said Linda
Gordon, HJF liaison to CCSC.
Although HJF members volunteer across CCSC’s programming, they most often work with
CCSC Youth Services Manager Cathy Brown. “Working with Houston Junior Forum is like
working with an elite track team,” Brown said. “Dedicated volunteers—including dependable
alternates—are ready to help out with CCSC projects no matter what the conditions present,”
Brown said. “You may recognize HJF from their pink and maroon aprons, but their smiles are
just as prevalent. Our Back To School and Jingle Bell Express events run more efficiently with their support and CCSC is fortunate
to have this compassionate and reliable group on its team.”
“I love volunteering for CCCS,” said HJF member Diana Root. “I really like working for CCSC because it’s like an extension of
HJF in that both organizations share the mission of helping children and families.”
“What CCSC does is so important in our beautiful city. It’s God’s work,” said HJF member Melanie Evans. “Volunteering for CCSC
is one of the best volunteer jobs Houston Junior Forum has—when you work with CCSC you know you are making a difference.”

Most recently HJF volunteers are serving as Lobby Docents in CCSC’s new building where they greet guests, give directions and make sure visitors are following CCSC’s safety protocols.
Share Christmas Joy Through Jingle Bell Express
CCSC has designed a SAFE and
NEW approach to Jingle Bell Express ensuring children in need receive toys, books and a grocery
gift card this Christmas.
This annual event (December
7-12) will still take place at our host site, Bellaire United Methodist Church, but is
being modified to a drive-thru format to safely serve the community. Gifts will be
prepared in advance and placed directly in pre-registered clients’ vehicles. Volunteer
opportunities will be limited—please register in advance to secure your spot.
Thanks to the generosity of the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation’s Ladies for Literacy Guild, each child will receive multiple books to delight and inspire a love for reading. CCSC is thrilled to receive this level of support from our
valued community partner.
The number one way you can support Jingle Bell Express is to purchase new,
unwrapped, nonviolent primary toys for children ages newborn to 15 years old. Visit www.ccschouston.org to access our Jingle Bell Express WISH LIST for online
purchasing or gift suggestions. The deadline for toy donations is earlier this year:
December 7.
For information, contact Youth Services Manager Cathy Brown at seasonal@

On All Saints’ Day Christian Community Service Center remembered its volunteers who passed away over the previous year. It was our privilege to serve alongside these caring, hardworking and faithful individuals who made a discernable difference in our community.
This year we remembered the following CCSC Saints:

Individuals and Families Remain Vulnerable to Crisis Our neighbors need you now, more than ever.
This year has been especially difficult for families already struggling to make ends meet. The pandemic, economic downturn, flooding and other personal crises have caused illness, lost jobs and reduced wages. Families are left scrambling to meet their basic needs: food to feed their children and emergency
assistance for rental payments.
But you can help.
A gift of any size—from $25 to $2,500—will make a difference in the lives of Houstonians in need
today. Your gift can provide a family with healthy, nutritious food
when their pantry runs low; emergency financial
assistance for rent or utilities; employment
training for the individual seeking better
opportunities; and services for vulnerable
children.
Your generosity will make a meaningful
impact in the lives of men, women and
children facing challenging times.
You’ll help ensure that even in the
midst of hardship families will
receive support for their needs.
We hope you’ll choose to help
a struggling family today.
Please make a generous
gift to CCSC this holiday
season and help us start
2021 strong. Gifts can be
mailed to P.O. Box 27924,

Getting to Work in CCSC’s New Home
CCSC staff happily moved into the J. Dean Robinson Building
on the W.T. & Louise J. Moran Campus in the end of September
and joyfully began the work of serving more and serving better
in our wonderful new home.
“The move into the new building was built upon 5+ years
of commitment to the vision of serving more and serving
better,” said Executive Director Michelle Shonbeck. “Thanks
to our community, we are now living into that vision. We look
forward to dedicating the building, and celebrating with all of
you, in early 2021 when the full project is complete.”
Phase 2 construction work on the parking lot and outdoor
areas has begun and is scheduled for completion in December.
CCSC’s new address for administration and all programs
except Emergency Services-Southwest will be 3434 Branard
St. Houston, TX 77027. The mailing address will continue to
be P.O. Box 27924, Houston, TX 77227-7924 and the phone

Emergency Services-Southwest has gratefully served the
community since the onset of the pandemic. The COVID-
19 pandemic created fear, medical concerns and increased
financial insecurity for many of our clients. Yet, these
neighbors knew they could turn to our pantry for help
feeding their hungry families during lockdown. Over the last
EMERGENCY SERVICES–SOUTHWESTsix months, Emergency Services-Southwest has been visited
by many new clients, including some from as far as Galveston
and Louisiana. We have also noticed that many requesting
help are seniors living on limited incomes. In elevated times
of need like these, our food pantry and financial assistance
for rent and utilities is essential and greatly appreciated.
JobNet’s new computer lab is equipped with 20 brand-new
computers, thanks to the MD Anderson Foundation.
When the new building opens to in-person workshops, the lab
will house classes in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and LinkedIn.
Clients will be able to use these computers to apply for jobs
online or update their resumes; improve their typing skills and

We are sometimes asked about the typical day at Emergency

Currently, job seekers can schedule time in the computer lab

What keeps us steady in this ever-changing environment is
the unwavering commitment of our stakeholders. Increased
community demand for food and financial assistance has
been met by an unprecedented increase in food donations
and support from so many. To all who are praying for us and
supporting the CCSC mission—thank you!

A donation of goods or services is an excellent way to help Christian Community Service Center achieve its mission. Here is a list of CCSC’s recent in-kind contributors. (If we missed your group, please let us know so we can recognize you in the next newsletter.) A special thank you to all churches and organizations that provide CCSC with gifts from organized food or hygiene drives on a regular basis.

MAXIMIZE YOUR GIVINGMany companies offer employees, retirees, and sometimes employee
spouses, a matching-gift benefit that can double or even triple your
donation to a qualifying charitable organization like CCSC. Some will
even make a matching contribution for your volunteer hours! Each
company has its own method for you to submit a matching-gift request.
Check with your Human Resources department to find out how you can
maximize your donations to CCSC.
