Discovery Communications’ strong operating and financial momentum continued during the second quarter as the company further capitalized on the organic growth initiatives we have been driving around the globe over the last several years, while also beginning to take advantage of the opportunities provided by our recent strategic acquisitions.

Once again this quarter, Discovery’s sustained commitment to producing captivating content and the further expansion of global pay-tv markets combined to drive audience and revenue growth across our unique distribution platform.

In the U.S., Discovery’s networks grew audience by 6% in our key 25-54 demographic in the second quarter, while the rest of cable was down 3% and broadcast television was down 10%.

One of the key drivers of this growth was the incredible success of SKYWIRE LIVE in June on Discovery Channel. Nik Wallenda’s breathtaking walk across the Grand Canyon captivated audiences across linear television and online, highlighting how powerful Discovery’s mission of showing compelling content that satisfies curiosity can be.

SKYWIRE LIVE was the #1 show in all of television for the weekend that it aired, and the most-watched show on cable for the entire quarter, drawing more than 13 million viewers. It also matched that success online where it generated over two million streams and more than 1.3 million tweets. And, not only did

SKYWIRE LIVE help drive Discovery Channel’s ratings up 6% this past quarter, but it also served as a great platform for launching NAKED AND AFRAID, the latest hit series on our flagship network.

Internationally as well, Discovery’s robust portfolio of more than 30 brands and 190 networks in over 220 countries and territories around the world continued to capitalize on the increasing penetration of pay television and the developing global advertising landscape with year-to-date international audience growth of 22% compared to 2012.

Going forward, Discovery remains committed to continuing to build our diverse portfolio of brands, developing our global distribution platform and capitalizing on strategic opportunities to best position the company for durable and sustained growth, while at the same time delivering strong financial results and returning capital to shareholders.

Discovery Communications and Revision3 have launched a new digital video network designed to ignite online audiences who are incurably curious about the world around them. The network, named TestTube, debuted in May with a robust slate of 15 short-form series and many more in development, and hosted by some of the Internet’s top personalities.

TestTube's lineup includes engaging and enlightening personalities, including Jason Silva, who hosts Shots of Awe, and a forthcoming series with Tory Belleci (blowing things up, naturally). At launch, the network racked up 10 million streams, and is expected to reach the 20 million stream mark by the end of the year. TestTube is available at TestTube.com, and through Revision3’s mobile site and apps, YouTube, Xbox and additional distribution partners.

Revision3 Welcomes Phil DeFranco to Discovery

In May, Revision3 announced the acquisition of DeFranco Creative, a successful collection of online video channels and ventures led by YouTube pioneer Philip DeFranco. A voice of a generation and one of the largest producers of Revision3 content, DeFranco is the force behind such popular shows and channels as THE PHILIP DEFRANCO SHOW, SOURCEFED, SOURCEFED NERD and THE VLOGGITY. DeFranco also previously worked with Discovery as the on-air host of last year's SHARK WEEK CHOMPDOWN.

As part of the acquisition, DeFranco has joined the Revision3 programming leadership team as Senior Vice President, Phil DeFranco Networks and Merchandise.

Discovery further expanded its industry leading international HD portfolio during the second quarter of 2013 with the debut of new HD networks across Central & Eastern Europe and Latin America. The new networks included Discovery Turbo Xtra HD in Turkey and Romania, Discovery Science HD in Russia, Romania, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Bulgaria, and Discovery Kids HD in more than 21 countries and territories across Latin America and the Caribbean. Overall, Discovery now offers HD programming in 187 markets outside of the U.S.

The linear broadcast of Discovery Channel is now available online to viewers in Poland as part of the ipla Internet television service. In addition, subscribers to the iplaNetTV package also have access to 150 programs from Discovery’s portfolio of networks through video on demand, including content from Discovery Channel, TLC, Investigation Discovery, Animal Planet, Discovery Science and Discovery World. iplaNetTV is an innovative proposal targeted at viewers who want to have access to their favorite TV channels not only at home, but also outside. It offers 15 channels of television.

Michael Eisenbaum & Jamie DuggerTLC’s little sweetheart Honey Boo Boo returned for a brand new season of HERE COMES HONEY BOO BOO on Wednesday, July 17 at 9 p.m. The premiere was a one-of-a-kind “Watch ’N’ Sniff” event where viewers were able to watch the show, scratch their cards and “redneckognize” aromas associated with the show as they welcome the scent of rural McIntyre, GA.

Viewers definitely picked up the scent, as the premiere ranked #1 among all ad-supported cable in its timeslot among

women 18-34 and #2 among people and women 25-54 and 18-49. It also

saw digital success, nabbing the #3 spot on SocialGuide’s top

social cable chart, following only ESPN’s 2013 ESPYs Awards and Countdown show. Additionally, the

premiere day scored the second highest day in page views on HERE COME HONEY BOO BOO’s TLC.com show page since the site

Nearly 10 million “Watch ’N’ Sniff” cards, featuring six scents that correlate to scenes in the double-stacked premiere episodes, were distributed in People and US Weekly magazines. In partnership with Time Warner Cable, the “Watch ’N’ Sniff” cards were also available at select Time Warner Cable retail stores across the country.

Fans also had the opportunity to participate in a virtual “Watch ’N’ Sniff” experience at TLC.com/HoneyBooBoo, where they could mix and match the smells featured in the show to enter to win $5,000.

TLC first introduced TODDLERS & TIARAS star Alana, aka "Honey Boo Boo" in January 2012, where her amusing personality and self-confidence won over viewers and her self-proclaimed nickname became a fixture in pop culture.

HERE COMES HONEY BOO BOO debuted in August 2012, providing an inside look into Alana's world where the six-year-old pageant sensation proves that she is more than just a Go-Go Juice-drinking beauty queen. A number of creative leaders across Discovery’s U.S. network portfolio were recognized with new roles during the second quarter of 2013:

Charlie Foley was named Executive Vice President of the newly created Original Content Group, charged with creating, writing and producing both scripted content and nonfiction series and formats for Discovery’s networks in the U.S. and internationally. Foley also will continue to oversee Animal Planet's Development group. A Primetime Emmy-nominated writer and executive producer, Foley is the creator, writer and

executive producer of MERMAIDS and was responsible for RIVER MONSTERS and WHALE WARS.

Howard Lee was named Executive Vice President, Production & Development for TLC, continuing to oversee the network’s bicoastal production team. Lee is Executive Producer of the pop cultural phenomenon HERE COMES HONEY BOO BOO, as well as overseeing the development of BREAKING AMISH, LONG ISLAND MEDIUM, CAKE BOSS and SISTER WIVES.

The Hub Network, a destination for kids and their families, received seven Daytime Emmy Awards, including “Outstanding Children’s Series” for R.L. STINE’S THE HAUNTING HOUR: THE SERIES, during the 40th Annual Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on June 14. The Hub Network tied with Nickelodeon as the most recognized kids’ network. This brings the Hub Network’s total Daytime Emmy Award wins to 12 after just two-and-a-half years on air.

SKYWIRE LIVE WITH NIK WALLENDA on June 23 drew record ratings when 13 million viewers watched Nik Wallenda, known as "The King of the High Wire," traverse the majestic Grand Canyon without using a harness. It

was the #1 program in all of television for the entire weekend and now ranks as the #1 most social Sunday primetime non-sports/non-award show telecast ever. The special generated an enormous amount of press, more than 1.3 million tweets and 2.1 million streams online. It also held seven of the top 10 trending positions on Twitter globally and dominated 71% of all social media comments in primetime on Sunday. Following SKYWIRE LIVE, the new series NAKED AND AFRAID was the highest-rated new series premiere of the year on Discovery Channel and #2 of all time behind only AMISH MAFIA.

TaiWaN’s MiliTarY eliTe coMMaNds raTiNgs WiTh MeN

The June 11 premiere of TAIWAN’S MILITARY ELITE, a three-part Discovery Channel local production in Taiwan scored an average audience nearly 10 times above the slot average and ranked first among all programs on pay-TV in its timeslot among all men and men 25-54. The program drove the network’s weekly primetime audience to a new record level and was the highest-rated show ever on Discovery Channel in Taiwan among men 15-49.

The mid-season finale of TLC’s LITTLE COUPLE on June 4 was the series’ highest rated episode ever among households

and posted its second highest delivery ever with two million viewers. In addition, LITTLE COUPLE posted its third highest ratings ever among women 25-54, behind only the prior two week’s performances. The season five spring run of TLC’s LITTLE COUPLE also posted its best season ratings ever among households, women 18-49 and 25-54, and delivery with 1.7 million viewers. The series returns on August 13 with its 100th episode following Bill, Jen and William as they start their new life together back home in Houston, Texas.

More than 11.3 million viewers tuned in during the debut month of TLC in the UK during May, making TLC the fifth most popular pay-TV entertainment channel among women 25-54 after just 30 days on the air. The network’s debut month featured hit series from the U.S., including HERE COMES HONEY BOO BOO and BREAKING AMISH, as well as new commissions featuring UK talent including Lisa Snowdon (YOUR STYLE IN HIS HANDS) and Dawn O’Porter (UNDERCOVER MUMS).

In the second quarter, Animal Planet achieved its most-watched quarter ever in primetime and total day among key demographics, including persons 2+, households, persons 18-

In addition to posting a record-breaking quarter, in June, Animal Planet delivered its most-watched month in network history in primetime among persons 2+, households, persons 25-54 and men 25-54. June also was the network’s most-watched month in total day among persons 2+ and households. For the month, OWN was the #1 cable network on Tuesday and Wednesday nights among African-American women 25-54, with both Tyler Perry series ranking among the top five original series in primetime in all of television for African-American women 25-54.

Powered by strong series and new hits, in the second quarter Destination America celebrated its best quarter ever in primetime delivery among persons 25-54, men 25-54 (tied), persons and men 18-49, households and

The network snared the believers with the new series about a team of trackers in Appalachia, MOUNTAIN MONSTERS, which premiered on June 22 as the network’s best original series debut ever among household delivery. The first two premieres of the series on June 22 and June 29 rank as the network’s two best telecasts ever in total day among household delivery. Additionally on June 2, the network cooked up season four of the hit competition series, BBQ PITMASTERS with the series’ premieres average performing double-to-triple digits above the network’s quarterly primetime average among key demographics. Driven

by the success of these two series, June ranked as Destination America’s best month ever in primetime delivery among persons and men 25-54, persons and men 18-49, households and persons 2+. Original series deliver growth in the second quarter for the Hub Network. In total day, the Hub Network had year-to-year growth for

the seventh consecutive quarter among kids 2-11, kids 6-11, women 18-49, adults 18-49, persons 2+ and households, and the sixth consecutive quarter among women 25-54. For eight consecutive quarters, the Hub Network also was the most co-viewed children’s network among kids 2-11 watching with adults 18-49.

Paul Bedard and Jimmy Riffle are the GATOR BOYS and they're back in town Sundays at 10 p.m. beginning July 28 on Animal Planet. The rugged duo returns to their home base in Florida for all-new summer episodes filled with non-stop action and even more monster-sized gators. The Florida Everglades is home to hundreds of thousands of these prehistoric beasts, so it isn't unusual for residents to spot gators of all shapes and sizes waddling across walkways, parking themselves in front of a convenience store, lurking in backyard canals or plunging into their swimming pools.

Luckily the GATOR BOYS have returned and they're back on call to rescue these nuisance reptiles from trappers who would otherwise kill them for their skins and meat.

For the first time ever, Animal Planet exposes what lies hidden in the mystical and mysterious wilderness in WILD ARABIA. Discovery Commerce Unveils HERE COMES HONEY BOO BOO Product Line

Discovery Commerce recently announced a new product line based on the hit TLC series, HERE COMES HONEY BOO BOO, including How To Honey Boo Boo: The Complete Guide on How to Redneckognize the Honey Boo Boo in You, which hit bookstores nationwide on July 9. Mama June Shannon participated in a book signing tour, stopping at Barnes & Nobles in both NYC and McLean, VA, and Walmart in Macon, GA, to date. Beginning this Fall, fans also can shop for posters, calendars, apparel, key chains, throw blankets, talking pens and disposable cameras, and much more to extend their viewing experience and bring home a piece of the family they’ve grown to love.

Discovery Education Partners with the National PTA to Bring Anti-Bullying Focused Town Halls to U.S. Cities

To empower communities to address bullying and take concrete steps toward change to help keep children safe, Discovery Education has partnered with the National PTA to host a series of town halls in cities across the nation. With the goal of advancing the conversation on bullying prevention and intervention as well as mental health assistance, the town halls are designed to bring together students, parents, educators, administrators, support personnel, community leaders and elected officials and promote discussion between all attendees.

Discovery Education and the National PTA hosted their first town hall in May in Charlotte, NC. A second town hall was held in June in Cincinnati and featured U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Kari Byron of Discovery Channel’s MYTHBUSTERS. In addition to including a panel of experts, both events have showcased a recorded message from Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden.

Discovery Education and Grand Prairie Independent School District Partner to Bring Largest-Ever Professional Development Event to TeachersDiscovery Education and one of Texas' largest school systems, Grand Prairie Independent School District (GPISD), have deepened their partnership to bring the largest professional development event ever to educators across the district. In August, nearly 90 members of the Discovery Education team will travel to Grand Prairie to conduct professional development sessions supporting the district’s 2,400 educators as they utilize digital resources to enhance student learning. Focused on instructional strategies that result in sustainable improvements in student engagement and

achievement, Discovery Education’s professional development experts have designed customized learning opportunities for GPISD to enrich teaching in ways that systemically impact learning and support the district’s long-term digital conversion plan. In addition, Discovery Education experts will continue to work with the district by providing at least four full days of professional development throughout the 2013-2014 school year for every GPISD teacher and principal.

Discovery Education and Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation Surprise Boston School with Funding to Make Health and Nutrition Dreams Come TrueDiscovery Education and the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation (HWCF) were joined by New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft in May to kick off a day of celebration with a generous donation for William E. Russell Elementary, winner of this year’s Find Your Balance Challenge. A Title I School with 100% participation in the free and reduced lunch program, William E. Russell does not have an indoor recess space or fully operating kitchen. The funds will make a significant impact on the administration’s ability to provide healthy lunch options and physical education programs for the students.
