Dover Chamber Names Scholarship Recipient and Educator of the Year

The Greater Dover Chamber of Commerce was pleased to award a $1,000 scholarship to Danielle Jewell as part of its annual Student Scholarship program. Jewell, who plans to attend the University of New England in the fall, is a graduate of Dover High School. In addition to being involved in multiple track and cross county sports, Dani was is a member of the National Honor Society, served leadership roles on the Student Council and participated in community service activities through Key Club, and Interact. During her tenure at Dover High she volunteered over 125 times and hosted her own student led blood drives with the American Red Cross.

The Chamber also recognized Helen Gitchier, Teacher at Saint Mary Academy, as the 2018 Educator of the Year. Helen is celebrating her 40th year as an educator for SMA, and is a “living example of patience, kindness, compassion and generosity. Her specialty is working with immigrants and non-native speaking individuals; she has been the director of the school’s professional development program, and has served on their Safety and Accreditation Committees. Students and adults alike from all around Dover proudly call her their 7th or 8th grade teacher and often reminisce about how truly special she was and of the important role she played in their education.

Both programs are organized by the Chamber’s Business and Education Partnership Committee and sponsored by Measured Progress, Jeanne Supple, chair of the Chamber’s Business & Education Partnership, is also an employee of the awards’ sponsor and chairs the company’s Charitable Contributions Committee.

Joyce Design Solutions Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Beverly A. Hodsdon, president and founder of Joyce Design Solutions has reached a milestone this August, celebrating 25 years of business. Based in Exeter, NH, the firm has grown from the dreams of founder/president, Beverly A. Hodsdon, to a firm that has served more than 120 non-profit organizations, small business, corporate and academic institutions throughout the United States. To celebrate, Joyce Design Solutions invited customers, and Chamber business members to the company’s ribbon cutting at the Dover Chamber on August 16th.

A 25th anniversary ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the Dover Chamber of Commerce.

At award ceremonies for each of the two programs, Supple, who presented the awards, congratulated them and commented dedication to school and community as well as the caliber and integrity of each award recipient, and how their commitment to their schools and community mirrored not only the Greater Dover Chamber’s mission to ‘make good things happen for Dover,’ but also the mission of Measured Progress which is ‘it’s all about student learning.’

MEMBER NEWSCommunity Honors Hounsell of Sole City Dance

During the recent celebration of Hounsell’s official retirement from her position as the executive director of Sole City Dance, there was an outpouring of stories, proclamations, song, laughter and tearful remembrances of her long career as both an artist and a teacher. Hounsell founded Sole City Dance, which is one of just a handful of nonprofit dance schools in New Hampshire and is currently located on Route 108 in Somersworth.

The lobby of the new Rochester Performance & Arts Center was decorated with photos, newspaper clippings, T-shirts, and other memorabilia showcasing some of the ways Hounsell has touched the local community with her work. A large gathering of past and current students, parents, faculty, board members, artists and community members joined to reflect upon and celebrate Hounsell’s legacy.

At the end of the evening, Sole City’s board of trustees announced the newly established Christine Hounsell Scholarship, to be given each year to two Sole City Dance tap students continuing their study of dance. This is in addition to the scholarships Sole City already provides to many of its low-income students who take classes in the studio. Hounsell plans to continue to be involved with Sole City Dance, and she also hopes to work with the nonprofit organization Dance for PD, which offers dance classes for people with Parkinson’s disease.

Service Credit Union Makes DonationService Credit Union (SCU) presented the Pease Development

Authority (PDA) with a check for $2,000. SCU Vice President of Marketing Wendy Beswick and Pease Branch Manager Michele Saccoccia were on hand to make the donation to PDA Board of Directors Chairman Kevin Smith, PDA Executive Director Dave Mullen and Portsmouth International Airport Director Paul Brean.

The Pease Development Authority will use the contribution to build the Pease Greeters a communications room for military landing at the Portsmouth International Airport. The PDA oversees the airport, where the Pease Greeters have been welcoming returning troops home since 2005. The non-profit organization greeted its 1,500th flight on June 9, 2018. The volunteer greeters gather at the airport to offer military a warm reception as they walk off and on the plane. The communications room will add to this heartfelt welcome by giving the troops access to phones, laptops and other devices to let their loved ones know that they have reached U.S. soil safely.

GBCC Names New PresidentThe Board of Trustees of the

Community College System of New Hampshire has appointed Dr. Pelema I. Morrice as president of Great Bay Community College. The appointment comes after the recommendation of CCSNH Chancellor Ross Gittell. Morrice succeeds Dr. Wildolfo Arvelo, who departed last fall to become New Hampshire’s director of economic development.

Prior to his appointment at Great Bay, Morrice served as vice provost at the University of Missouri, heading up enrollment management and strategic development. He oversaw admissions and financial aid; enrollment research, analytics and communications; registrar and student information systems; and community college transfer pathways. He engaged in successful fundraising efforts and launched new scholarship programs, while increasing student yield and retention. Morrice had previously served as chief enrollment officer at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, where his accomplishments included increasing applications, enrollment and retention and leading revenue enhancement programs, and at the University of Nebraska Omaha as associate vice chancellor in the Academic and Student Affairs Division, responsible for enrollment management, admissions and financial aid, student success efforts, dual enrollment and community college transfer programs, and marketing and communications. He began his higher education career as a financial aid counselor at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

Gittell noted that the Great Bay position provides an opportunity for Morrice to synthesize strong operational and strategic experience from previous positions. Morrice holds a Ph.D. in higher education from the University of Michigan, a master’s degree in higher education and a bachelor of arts in organizational psychology from San Jose State University. He began his postsecondary education pathway at Cabrillo Community College in Aptos, California. Morrice is currently completing an executive MBA at the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Morrice has extensive experience as an expert speaker with particular expertise in college access, diversity and demographic trends, educational mobility and building a postsecondary pipeline.

DePlanche Generously Gives Her Time So Others Can Breathe Easier

The Leone, McDonnell & Roberts, PA shareholder Paula DePlanche has been a distinguished leader for the American Lung Association in New Hampshire. As she celebrates 30 years with Leone, McDonnell & Roberts, PA this November, she also celebrates 11 years of volunteerism with the American Lung Association, where she helped to organize events, raise awareness and educate the local community on the dangers of lung disease.

Paula began her support of the American Lung Association in 2007. Since that time, she has served as Chair of the Leadership Board, Chair of the Audit Committee and has volunteered for the organization’s Cycle the Seacoast event since its inception in 2011. Her work with the Lung Association has led to additional support from Leone, McDonnell & Roberts, which has been a sponsor of the Cycle the Seacoast event throughout its nine years.

Paula’s involvement stemmed from a personal experience with the devastation caused by lung disease, as her grandfather was stricken with lung cancer and suffered from COPD. He ultimately lost his life to COPD.

The 9th Annual Cycle the Seacoast event took place on May 6th, 2018 with over 400 cyclists and 200 volunteers participating in support of the American Lung Association. The one-day, multi-route cycling event is held at Redhook Brewery in Portsmouth, New Hampshire each year on the first Sunday of May, and has raised over $115,000 this year alone for the American Lung Association and over $750,000 over the last nine years.

MSPs were ranked according to a unique methodology, which recognizes that not all revenue streams are created equal. Woodman Museum Has New LeaderBy Brian Early, Foster’s Daily Democrat

The Woodman Museum has hired as a new executive director to lead the 102-year-old institution on Central Avenue. David Tompkins started his new career on Thursday after the board of trustees chose him out more than 35 candidates.

While Tompkins, 59, has called Dover home for him and his family for the past 16 years, he has spent many of those years working in other parts of the country. His new five-minute commute is perhaps one of his favorite aspects of the job, allowing him to spend much more time with his family and lead an organization he wants more people in the region to know about. He’s also excited about taking a leadership role in an organization with firm footing with lots of growth potential, a change from his most recent work.

The Kansas City, Kansas, native comes to the Woodman Museum with more than 30 years of senior executive experience that has been mostly focused in the performing arts. For much of this century, Tompkins has overseen and turned around many non-profits, such as the Boston Ballet, Ballet Arizona, Modesto Symphony Orchestra, Orlando Ballet, Ballet West and Portland Ballet.

One of his goals is to remind those who have lived in Dover for years who haven’t been to the museum in years to return.
