Land Purchased by Daniel Horry in 1744

Throughout mid-1700’s the plantation was developed

Used as a refuge throughout the Revolutionary War

Guarded Francis Marion and was searched twice by the British during the war

Visited by George Washington after the war.

Managed throughout the first half of the 19th century by primarily women

Following the Civil War, plantation managed by Henry Middleton Rutledge

H.M. Rutledge bequeaths plantation to son, Archibald Rutledge.

In 1971, Rutledge gave plantation to the South Carolina State Parks Service

Became an English teacher in 1904 at Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania

Did not move back until 1837 following his retirement

Began renovations on Hampton Plantation

Lived out his days on the plantation with his family

In 1971, gave plantation to Parks Service
