REGULARS | PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear Members,
I am pleased to share with you our sporting achievements at the recent inter-club competitions. Our golfers emerged as champions at the second leg of the Inter-Social Club Golf Tournament. We were honoured to have hosted the 16th Annual Inter-Club Meet, Swimming (AIMS) with participating clubs, Warren Golf and Country Club and Keppel Club. Our swimmers did us proud by clinching the championship title for the ninth consecutive year. Well done, Team SGCC!
In July 2017, we organised the 28th Age Group Swim Meet and received much positive feedback from participants from the various swim schools. We look forward to hosting more of such events to provide more exposure for our swimmers. The next event to be hosted by the Club is the SGCC Preparatory Swim Series 5 which will be held on 18 and 19 November 2017; we look forward to your continued support and participation. We organised a cycling trip to Batam, Indonesia with about 15 participants enjoying a 55km ride and the beautiful scenery. If you are game for an outdoor adventure, join us for an island-hopping trip around the southern islands of Singapore in our fourth edition of Exploring SG Series on 26 November 2017.
Feedback is a vital part of communication, it helps the Club to improve its services to members. The recent members’ request to provide Wi-Fi at the Gym was considered and I am delighted to share with you that the Gym and Squash Courts area are now equipped with Wi-Fi internet access. Login details are available at the Gym; do check with our staff. In providing access to the Garden Grill for wheelchair users, we have purchased a stair climber to transport those in need of such service from the Main Lobby to the Garden Grill.
In August 2017, we celebrated Singapore’s 52nd birthday and SGCC’s heritage with a family fun walk, a book launch cum carnival and a party. The Fitness Fraternity led over 280 participants on a 10km walk from Singapore Sports Hub to Gardens by the Bay. The book launch cum carnival held at the Main Lobby saw over 500 attendees, young and old, enjoying games, snacks and performances. Together with Club Patron Ms Sylvia Lim, Book Project Committee and General Committee members, we unveiled our much-awaited SGCC coffee table book, Serangoon Gardens Country Club: Our Heritage, Our Pride, Our Future. We also held a countdown to National Day party at the Kensington Ballroom which attracted over 200 participants. I am pleased to see that these events were well attended with members, their families and guests participating actively and enjoying a good time at the Club.
We paid tribute to the King of Rock ‘N’ Roll, Elvis Presley at the All Shook Up: Elvis 40th Anniversary Celebrations. Elvis impressionist artistes from Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and Singapore gathered at the Club and put up a good show for members and guests. During the September school holidays, we had our annual Junior Gems Party. This year’s theme, Dino, got the children excited as they bounced on dinosaur-themed bouncy castle, learned about dinosaurs through the fossil digging activity and enjoyed the magic and juggling performances.
Celebrate Oktoberfest with great German food and drinks at the Crossroads Lounge throughout the month of October or party with live bands at the Kensington Ballroom. You can also
feast on Bavarian cuisine at the Garden Grill. Want to find out more about beer? Join us for a trip to Asia Pacific Breweries and discover the iconic Tiger Beer brewing process.
With the festive season around the corner, we have prepared exciting programmes for everyone. The theme for this year's Christmas Light-up event is Jingle & Mingle Christmas. Look forward to the magnificent transformation of our Main Lobby as we attempt to turn it into a winter wonderland together with the lighting of our Christmas tree on 25 November 2017. You will also get to shop at our mini Christmas bazaar, unleash your creativity at the painting workshop, savour delicious Christmas treats and enjoy performances. On Christmas Eve, join our resident members’ band Sound Sensation as they ring in Christmas with some festive cheer.
To top off the excitement, we will be extending the promotion for our coffee table book, Serangoon Gardens Country Club: Our Heritage, Our Pride, Our Future until the end of the year. The book explores our beginnings as a sports club to where we are now, a modern social country club. Discover the struggles and challenges of the Club’s early years and how our founding members persevered and transformed SGCC. The book also celebrates the accomplishments of our members in various sports and the spirit of camaraderie, harmony and unity. Get your copy, own this memorable book that showcases an accurate historical account of Serangoon Gardens Country Club.
Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our Hindu members a Happy Deepavali.

SPECIAL
CELEBRATING NATIONAL DAY AT SGCCSGCC Family Fun Walk | Celebrating the SGCC Heritage: SGCC Coffee Table Book Launch cum National Day Carnival6 August 2017
In celebration of National Day, over 280 members arrived bright and early at the Club, all geared up and ready for the Fitness Fraternity signature event, the SGCC Family
Fun Walk. The Main Lobby was buzzing with excitement as participants collected their exclusive Walker’s pack which included a customised T-shirt and a drawstring bag.
They were then transported to the Singapore Sports Hub, the starting point of the walk. The sun shone so brilliantly in the clear blue sky as our Club Patron Ms Sylvia Lim, flagged off the walk. Participants took on the 10km walk challenge with much anticipation. The route took them through Tanjung Rhu, Gardens by the Bay (East), Marina Barrage, Gardens by the Bay (South) and Kallang Leisure Park. While participants took in the sight of Singapore’s magnificent skyline, many were reminded of her transformation from a small fishing village to a first-class city.
Back at the Club, preparations were underway for the SGCC Coffee Table Book Launch cum National Day Carnival at the Main Lobby. Chapteh, five stones, pick-up sticks, tikam tikam and other traditional games took centre stage along with tasty treats such as popcorn, candy floss, muah chee and churros. With participants back from the walk and other members joining in the festivities, the Main Lobby was filled with joy and laughter. Goodie bags packed with old-school snacks such as Bob Dog Orion, Super Ring, Lollipop and Ovaltine Tablets Malt along with mini Singapore flags were given.

USE OF MAHJONG SETSWe would like to remind members to return the mahjong sets to the drawer at the Mahjong Room after their game. Also, members are to return the Mahjong Room key to the Main Reception after the end of the game or to the Security Guardhouse after the closing hours of the Main Reception.
OCCUPYING SEATS AT COFFEE DELIThe Coffee Deli is especially crowded during swimming lessons on weekday evenings and weekend mornings. Many chairs and tables are filled with bags, but with no one occupying them. This deprives members who want to have a meal from doing so, due to lack of seats. We urge members to be considerate to their fellow members and refrain from occupying the seats with bags. There are day-use lockers near the Kiddieland as well as racks at the umbrella shades near the Coffee Deli for members to keep their belongings. Let’s make the dining experience at the Coffee Deli more pleasurable for everyone!

JUNIOR GEMS DINO PARTY9 September 2017
Close to 700 participants turned up for our favourite annual kids’ party at the Kensington Ballroom. With the theme Dino, the ballroom was transformed into prehistoric times with a ginormous dinosaur balloon arch, dinosaur decorations as well as games and activities. The fossil digging activity was a great hit amongst kids as they were given paintbrushes and shown how to gently sweep and carefully search for dinosaurs like real palaeontologists. The exciting magic and juggling show also got the crowd roaring with laughter. Other highlights included face and hand painting, balloon sculptures, free flow of popcorn and candy floss, colouring activities and fun stage games. Parents and kids alike had a dino-mite time at the party!
