Pastor’s Corner Dear Friends in Christ,

My first Sunday to lead worship and preach as an

ordained pastor was Reformation Sunday, 1983. Over the

next few weeks, we celebrated the 500th birthday of

Martin Luther, a leader of the Reformation in the 16th

    century.

It was a great time in the church. I was in a small

congregation on the south side of Birmingham,

Alabama. We had a good relationship with the Lutheran

Church-Missouri Synod...we worshipped with the Roman

Catholics in the cathedral in Birmingham around Luther's

birthday...I met weekly with a group of local pastors that

were not Lutheran, and it made for some lively discussion.

Things have changed in the church in the last 40

    years...60 years...100 years…

For me, the church is always in reform. It did not

happen just 502 years ago on October 31, 1517 when

Luther challenged the church with 95 points of

    discussion.

So our celebration this weekend, in my humble

    opinion, is 3-fold.

    1) We are the church of Jesus Christ--living,

breathing, moving, growing in width and depth,

    throughout the world.

    2) We are always seeking ways to be relevant to the

world, and in so doing, bringing the good news of Jesus'

death for our sins and resurrection for the promise of

eternal life that gives us hope each day.

    3) We remember the past, celebrate the present and

plan vigorously for the future of the church in the world. It

    brings the message no other entity can. Love and hope;

grace and faith; Word and water; bread and wine.

Travelling around the country, there are few churches

I attend with the energy of Prince of Peace. Sunday gives

us pause to thank God for what we have here, and to pray

for the church everywhere that their 3-fold (or more)

celebrations might be similar to ours.

Thanks for being the church together in this place!

    Faithfully yours,

Rick Hartmann, Interim Pastor (aka "Short-timer!")

    Tuesday’s Morning Prayer Will Begin

    at 9:45 a.m. Next Week

The Little Shepherds’ preschool children will be

parading through the church in their costumes

Tuesday, October 29 in the morning at 9:30, so

Morning Prayer will begin at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday,

    with Reflections to follow.

Evening Prayer will begin at 7:00 p.m. as usual,

with Reflections to follow the short service.

Bible Sunday for 2nd Graders This Sunday, October 27, we will present our second graders with Bibles at the 11:00 a.m. worship service. This gift is

Following the 11:00 service, from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m., second graders and their parents are invited to gather for

pizza lunch, to learn about their new Bibles, and to celebrate the gift of God’s Word for us.

Please call the church office to RSVP 614.766.6377 so that we know how many to expect at the service and for lunch.

If your elementary school child has not received a Bible from Prince of Peace, they are welcome to come forward during

worship to receive a Bible and to stay for the workshop. Please RSVP to the church office at 614.766.6377.

    October 2019

Dear Members of Prince of Peace,

Our collective response to the love and grace we’ve been shown in Christ Jesus has resulted in the vitality and a real

sense of mission at Prince of Peace. As we plan and look forward to 2020, we have an opportunity to further expand

the mission we all share. Our congregation consistently demonstrates the power of strong faith and shared love.

To continually press forward, we are conducting the “God’s 20/20 Vision” stewardship program for financial and partici-

pation support in 2020. We need your involvement and commitment to enable us to continue to expand the mission

    programs of the congregation.

“God’s 20/20 Vision” stewardship program will kick off this week with the distribution of “God’s 20/20 Vision” packet

for each family or person. The packets will be available at church for the next few weeks.

Make a point of picking your stewardship packet up while at church for worship or anytime.

The information in the packet should is self-explanatory. However, if you have questions you can contact Jim Hoyt at

    [email protected] or 614.917.3493.

We are asking that the 2020 Estimate of Giving cards be returned via the offering on

Christ the King Sunday, November 23, 24. Cards can be returned earlier to the church office as well.

Thank you of your support of Prince of Peace and the mission we all share.

    With thanksgiving,

What We All Need to Know about Emergencies at Prince of Peace

The Safety and Emergency Task Force has met several times in the past year. The likelihood of Prince of Peace

experiencing an active shooter situation, fire or bomb threat is very low, but we want to be prepared.

Please read the following common-sense guidelines, so that we are all ready, just in case.

In the Event of a Fire

You may hear the fire alarm, see the alarms flashing strobe light,

smell smoke, or hear someone shout “Fire!”

    What Should You Do?

Immediately evacuate the building through the nearest

    safe Emergency Exit.

Dublin Police To Provide Active Shooter Training Class at Prince of Peace

    Saturday, November 9

    9:00 a.m. - noon

    Fellowship Hall

See display in the Fellowship Hall to sign up. Contact Fred Schnitzspahn at [email protected]

or Jocelyn Alford at [email protected] with any questions.

This training is conducted by the Dublin Police Department and involves an interactive presentation allowing you to

practice responses in various scenarios. While these scenarios are highly unlikely, the more prepared we are, the safer

    Prince of Peace will be.

Due to the subject matter, including graphic scenes and adult language within the videos, the presentation is best suit-

ed for adults. Minimum age to attend this training is 13. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardi-

an. A liability waiver must be signed to attend this training. The waivers are on the display table.

    https://dublinohiousa.gov/dublin-police/active-shooter-situations/

In the Event of a Weather Emergency Such as Tornado

You are most likely to hear an announcement from someone in authority concerning a

weather emergency. You could also hear the tornado-warning siren or receive a

    weather alert.

    What Should You Do?

Immediately relocate to the basement activity room and wait for the all clear.

    mailto:[email protected]:[email protected]://dublinohiousa.gov/dublin-police/active-shooter-situations/

  • 9

In the Event of an Active Threat Such as an

    Active Shooter

You may hear gunshots (pop-pop-pop), or hear someone shout

“Lockdown-Lockdown-Lockdown” or “Active Shooter” or “Gun,”

or see someone shooting a gun. Do not investigate!

    What Should You Do?

RUN/ESCAPE if possible: If it is safe to do so, Immediately evacuate the building through the nearest Emergency Exit. If you are in Fellowship Hall or other area with window walls, immediately move to an area where you are less visi-

ble and then, if it is safe to do, so evacuate the building. Call 911 when you are in a safe location.

    If you Cannot Evacuate:

    • HIDE AND BARRICADE: Take steps to the keep the shooter from getting in, barricade the door(s), move away from windows, stay low and spread out.

    • Silence cell phones, seek out alternate escape routes such as windows and use them if possible - if you still

cannot escape, be prepared to fight.

    • FIGHT as a last resort: Fight the shooter with anything available and swarm the intruder and pin the extremities to wrestle the weapon away.

    • Secure the weapon in a trash can or other safe location.

When Police arrive – Keep your hands empty and follow their commands.

    For All Building Evacuations

    • Get as far away from the building as possible.

    • Call 911 when you are in a safe location.

DO NOT GO TO YOUR CAR; DO NOT LEAVE BY CAR.

    • Leaving by car will create bottleneck in the parking lot and prevent

emergency vehicles from getting to Prince of Peace.

    • Comply with the instructions from emergency responders.

    • Reunite with family members once you are out of the building.

In the Event of a Bomb Threat

You are most likely to hear an announcement from

someone in authority concerning this threat.

    What Should You Do?

Immediately evacuate the building through the

    nearest safe Emergency Exit.

On Sunday, October 27 at 9:30 a.m., Prince of Peace Adult Study will welcome guest speaker

Mrs. Liliana Castillio Baiman, a former Dreamer who came to the U.S. in 1991 with her family seeking a better future.

The term “Dreamers” refers to undocumented young men and women who were brought to the United States by their

parents when they were children or teens. It is estimated that there are over one million Dreamers currently residing

    in the U.S.

Since Dreamers are undocumented aliens who are not permitted to work legally in the U.S. and are subject to

deportation, Congress proposed the Dream Act in 2001 to provide a multi-phase process for qualifying individuals

that would first grant conditional residency and upon meeting further qualifications qualify for permanent residency.

Unfortunately, the Dream Act failed to pass then and even though reintroduced numerous times over the years has

    continued to fail.

Liliana Castillio Baiman is a graduate of the University of Houston with degrees in Political Science and Psychology

and has been an activist for immigration and social justice issues for over fifteen years. She is also a naturalized

U.S. citizen and a candidate for the Columbus City Council.

Please join us to learn more as she shares her immigration challenges and experiences with us.

    The Benefits of Journaling

It is widely known that writing can be an important from of

self-reflection, and spiritual therapy. Writing about one’s

thoughts and feelings makes writing therapeutic.

One of the main benefits of emotional expression is that it can

release pent-up emotional energy, and this has positive health

effects for the writer. Keeping a journal can be seen as a

mechanism for coping with daily frustrations and challenges.

    Health Benefits

There is increasing evidence to support the notion that

journaling has a positive impact on physical well-being.

University of Texas at Austin psychologist and researcher James Pennebaker contends that regular journaling

strengthens immune cells. Pennebaker believes that writing about stressful events helps you come to terms with them,

thus reducing the impact of these stressors on your physical health.

Begin journaling and experience these benefits:

    • Clarify thoughts and feelings. If you seem all jumbled up inside and unsure of what you want or feel, take a few

minutes to jot down your thoughts and emotions. It can help you get in touch with your inner self.

    • Discover yourself. Write routinely and you will get to know what makes you feel happy and confident. Writing will

help you see more clearly the situations and people who have a negative effect on you. These realizations are

    beneficial to restoring emotional wellbeing.

    • Reduce stress. Write about negative feelings-anger, sadness or other painful emotions. Writing may help to

release the intensity of these feelings. The goal is to free your mind of past hurts and to feel calmer and better

able to live in the present.

In addition to all of these wonderful benefits, keeping a journal allows you to track patterns, trends and improvements

over time. When current circumstances appear insurmountable, you will be able to look back on your writing and see

    where you have made progress.

    How to Begin

    • Journaling will be most effective if you do it daily for about 20 minutes.

    • Find a quiet place and relax. Spelling and punctuation are optional.

    • Write quickly, as this frees your brain from the notion of an end goal for your writing.

    • If it helps, pick a theme for the day or week, such as peace of mind, change or frustration.

The most important idea is that there are no rules.

    • Through writing you’ll discover how your journal is an all-accepting, nonjudgmental tool for spiritual renewal and

    physical wellbeing.
