THANK YOU FROM THE PEACEHEALTH ST. JOSEPH CANCER CENTER By Dr. William Hall, Radiation Oncologist Five years ago, our generous philanthropic community contributed more than $9 million to help build an integrated cancer center that could consolidate a wide array of treatment and support services into a single convenient location. Since it opened in 2012, the PeaceHealth St. Joseph Cancer Center has served more than 6,000 patients and their loved ones, providing healing and compassionate care during some of the most difficult and frightening moments of their lives. Today, philanthropy helps fund the necessary technology, education and equipment to provide our patients access to state-of-the-art clinical tools. Thanks to you we recently, purchased an advanced robotic treatment table that allows us to perfectly position patients for safe, highly accurate and reproducible radiation treatment setups. The level of alignment accuracy that the 6DoF Couch® provides is beneficial to all patients, but it is especially critical for high-intensity treatments, such as intensity- modulated radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). This advanced technology will facilitate the expansion of our existing SBRT program into spine, liver, prostate and other body sites which require 6DoF® positioning for safe and accurate treatment. As a PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation donor, you enhance our ability to deliver exceptional care. Your contributions fund advanced technology, research studies, clinical trials, complementary therapies like massage and acupuncture, and a robust, diverse array of classes and support programs to help patients connect with each other and heal in their own way. Your support helps to ensure that everyone who needs our help will receive it with open arms, regardless of their ability to pay. Thank you for making a difference. A PUBLICATION OF PEACEHEALTH ST. THANK YOU FROM THE PEACEHEALTH ST. JOSEPH CANCER CENTER

By Dr. William Hall, Radiation Oncologist

Five years ago, our generous philanthropic community contributed more than $9 million to help build an integrated cancer center that could consolidate a wide array of treatment and support services into a single convenient location.

The level of alignment accuracy that the 6DoF Couch® provides is beneficial to all patients, but it is especially critical for high-intensity treatments, such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT).

You Funded It: ENDOSCOPIC EQUIPMENT for Speech & Language Therapy

Thanks to donors, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center have a new tool for assessing patients who have trouble swallowing due to stroke or illness. The Foundation has funded two Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES®) systems, one for use by inpatient rehab and acute care, and one for outpatient treatment at the Grabow Therapy & Wellness Center.

This new fiberoptic equipment will allow SLPs to view a patient’s pharynx, larynx

and upper esophageal opening clearly and in full color while dyed food or liquids are swallowed. This helps them recommend appropriate interventions to ensure swallowing safety. FEES® can be done at bedside and doesn’t involve exposure to radiation. It is an evidenced-based, convenient and safe alternative to a Modified Barium Swallow study (MBS).

Your support has made this possible. Thank you!

PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation launched a $1 million campaign in March 2017 to fund Cardiovascular Center diagnostic imaging advancements. To date, our generous community has donated more than $831,000 toward our goal!

Your gift will save lives by funding equipment and facility improvements for cardiovascular

diagnostic imaging needs. Image clarity is critical to cardiovascular diagnostic and treatment procedures. New imaging systems drastically increase image clarity for more precise diagnosis and treatment.

Electrophysiology Lab equipment and facility improvements will allow clinicians to care for 10-12 percent more patients per year. Additionally, the new imaging systems will reduce radiation exposure for patients and employees by up to 40 percent, depending on the procedure.

Help support local cardiovascular care with a campaign gift. Naming opportunities are available in the Cardiovascular Center for gifts of $10,000 or more. To learn more, contact Jennifer Fix at 360-788-6861 or [email protected].

According to the National Association for Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five adults experiences a mental health condition every year. One in 17 lives with a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. For members of our community needing inpatient care during a mental health crisis, PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center’s 20-bed Behavioral Health Inpatient Unit offers supportive, individualized care in a safe, home-like environment.

Thanks to our generous donors, patients on this unit will soon have some brand-new equipment to help them achieve their therapeutic goals. The Foundation has approved the purchase of exercise equipment and a folding ping-pong table to enable patients to release energy in a healthy way, a smart TV, educational books for information and entertainment, and mood-enhancing lighting to increase their overall well-being.

These resources will enable staff to develop personalized interventions to help patients gain positive life coping skills.

For more than 60 years, the Auxiliaries of PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center have raised funds to purchase hospital equipment and enhance patient care for the benefit of our entire community. This group of more than 100 dedicated volunteers holds various special events, sales and fundraisers throughout the year. Then comes the really rewarding part – they get to give the money away to support patient care at St. Joseph!

Each fall the Central Auxiliary invites the various PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center departments to present their funding “wish lists” to Auxiliary members who make a joint decision about which items to support. For the 2017-2018 year the two active auxiliaries, Sister Rose Fidelma Auxiliary and Sister Catherine Auxiliary, have pledged more than $96,000 to fund the following items:

Thank you Auxiliary members for your dedication and commitment to ensuring that PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center has the resources it needs to serve our community!

Central Auxiliary co-presidents Becky Walstad and Rosemary Westover said of the pledge –

“We are so pleased to help the Childbirth Center, Cardiovascular Center and Surgical Services Department with this vital equipment. Knowing that our work touches so many people is truly rewarding.”

Thanks to your generosity, PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation allocated more than $2.2 million in calendar year 2017. Here are just a few of the equipment and program needs funded with the help of our philanthropic community:

O Opening and state-of-the art equipment for the Grabow Therapy & Wellness Center, which features two gyms, 15 treatment rooms, an education center and a treatment pool with two underwater treadmills.

O High-quality regional, nature-based art for PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center’s permanent art collection. O Facility enhancements and new equipment for our childbirth center to match our outstanding level of care.

O Resources to help the less fortunate of our community, including clothes for patients who lack adequate or appropriate clothing for discharge and Bridge Assistance to help with hospital bills. O Funding for the Nutrition and Diabetes Clinic’s childhood obesity prevention program ACT! (Actively Changing Together) that encourages healthy lifestyles through youth scholarships to the Whatcom Family YMCA.

O Scholarships to our Registered Nurses pursuing Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees. An increase in the percentage of BSN-prepared nurses has been tied to better outcomes for patients.

O Funding for the Journey to Magnet nursing initiative – an ongoing effort to place PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center among the top 8 percent of U.S. hospitals earning Magnet Recognition® from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). This is the highest and most prestigious distinction a healthcare organization can receive for nursing excellence and high-quality patient care.
