UNETHICAL AND UNSCRUPULOUS PRACTICES IN DOMESTIC FISH TRADE/ FISH HANDLING

FACULTY IMPROVEMENT TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR CIFNET OFFICIALS

PASSING OUT OF APPRENTICE TRAINEES

NIFPHATT offered two days Practical refresher course on Tuna handling and processing to 8 officials from CIFNET during 25-26 June, 2018. During the training programme, practical demonstration on different fish processing techniques like freezing, canning, value addition and sashimi tuna handling were covered. The programme successfully completed with positive feedback from the trainees.

Mr. Aswin T.S. and Ms. Anila M.A. from Govt. Vocational Higher Secondary School, Kadamakudy, Ernakulam has successfully completed one year appre nticeship training in fisheries post harvest technology sponsored by the Regional Directorates of Apprenticeship Training (RDAT), Chennai jointly with the Directorate of Vocational Higher Secondary Education, Govt. of Kerala. The candidates were given intensive training in various aspects of post harvest technology.

It has been recently reported by a section of the media and by government agencies that a minority of fish traders/ fish handlers/ transporters are resorting to the practice of using hazardous and unconventional chemicals for fish preservation especially during long range transportation from neighbouring States. It is believed that such chemicals are being blended with ice either during ice making or after/ while crushing. Some of such chemicals are legally permitted to be used in prepared foods at prescribed levels only as antimicrobial agents, such as sodium benzoate. Other chemicals used include formalin or ammonia and are carcinogenic or highly harmful when consumed, therefore have no roles in the food processing/preservation regimes. The advantage of no physical or organoleptic quality changes of fish when such chemicals are used, makes it convenient for them to use it. Even though such people are a minority, the damage caused by them to the industry is enormous and may take years to regain the confidence of the consumers. Anyway it’s a relief that the government agencies have intervened immediately and confidence building measures are on. The parties who were at the receiving end are the primary producers/ fishermen community of the State. They were forced to sell off their produce at throw away prices or often discarded due to the fall in demand. There was an unprecedented surge in the test marketing activities of NIFPHATT during these periods, as the consumers are well aware of the fact that this Institute’s activities are development in nature and not on commercial motto. And that the raw materials are sourced through the government department vessels and fishermen cooperative societies and also that procurement, processing, storage and release of the products are through stringent quality inspection.
