Is it April already? It seems like it was just a few

weeks ago we were at the Club having a drink to bid

farewell to the old year, followed by a toast to wel-

come in the New Year!

MVCC continues to bring us a variety of party venues

that keep our members jumping. Great job Marion

John and committee! So far this month the

St. Patrick’s day party was a huge success and by

the time this hits the press the gun smoke from the

Western party will have turned once again to pollen. We have also had 3 Jill’s

and a Jack, 3 Lassies and a Laddie, and as usual our two Sunday couples groups

continue having their fun golf and dinner events. Thank you Sunday groups (18

holers organized by Tricia Eales and 9 holers by Peter Schuchard) for provid-

ing members fun events while supporting our Club.

The Men’s Invitational is taking place as I write this article and we are hosting a

great field of participants. It’s good to see the golf course full of members and

guests. Thanks to all members and guests who supported this year’s event.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE

If you aren’t tired of hearing this next message , you aren’t reading my

articles! That’s OK but this message is very important. Please support the

Club by participating in at least two EXTRA dining events and golf rounds per

month through the balance of this fiscal year ending 30 June. THIS WOULD

GENERATE AN ADDITIONAL $110,000 IN NET PROFIT TO OUR BOTTOME LINE!

Meeting our revenue goals between now and then

will play a positive role in planning next year’s

budget and determining what we will do to fund it.

There are only three funding sources: Dues, assess-

ments, and supplemental income revenues,…..ie,

golf and dining. I think we would all agree that golf

and dining brings us far more joy than the other

two! We need to make this happen members!

The past few years have had a dramatic impact on country clubs and their ability to attract new members

as they lose members through attrition and the impacts of the economy. Every day we see media ads for

open golf, special pricing, trial memberships, and even free food. The terms “private country club” and

“semi-private country club” have become less discernible. During this time our Club has focused on operat-

ing cost reductions, promoting increased participation in golf and dining, and tailoring membership

programs that are responsive to the market. We have been successful. This fiscal year produced 47

seasonal members, and over 60 summer members. Several new members have already introduced new

prospects. Our Boards, member volunteers, and staff have continued to find ways to trim operating

costs by implementing and monitoring good business practices. The results have been incredibly good!

We have reduced expenses by over $900k during the past 5 years. This is a huge saving that has

allowed us to keep our Club private, attend to our capital improvements, keep our dues level, and our

quality high. I hope these accomplishments are responsive to anyone who asks, “What is the Club going

to do for me?”

We hope our membership losses from attrition and the economy have leveled off and we can look forward

to welcoming an even higher number of new members than last year. We anticipate a boost in membership

potential now that the housing market shows some signs of improvement - and Sarasota and Venice having

been voted among the best cities in which to retire, (Sarasota #1 and Venice #9).

So members, please do your part in finishing this year on a positive note. We can easily make it happen! To

those of you who are seen regularly supporting our dining, bar and golf course, a sincere thank you. To

those reading this and wondering “are we doing our share?’ - please consider the benefit to the Club - and

to you! Let’s raise the roof before the migrations take place, and the budgetary process begins!!

March was the month for Tournaments. The Men’s Doubles started out with a round robin format with the these final results: (A) Group; Terry Ellis/Bill Lawson, winners and Rob Harkins/Roger Mulier, finalists. (See photo below) (B) Group; Jim

Basler/Al DeRiemacker, winners and Stu Bischoff/

(guest) Peter Mayer, finalists.

The Ladies played their doubles in the heat with blisters, sore muscles, verge of heat stroke, but no complaints. They were all champions. Every score

was won or lost within one point .

The (A) Champions were Anne Lewis and Mollyann Johnstone, with Dorothy Coons and Joyce Compton

the finalists, photographed below.

The (B) finalists were Cindy Bischoff, Marie Lawson,

Barbara Schanz and Carol Basler.

The Men’s Tennis team has won 32 out of 51 matches and is in a solid fourth place out of ten teams. We will have played 9 home and 9 away matches, each with 3 doubles teams. Leading scorers are; Roger Mulier 13-2, Bill Lawson 12-3 and Rob Harkins 10-4. Our last match is at Venice Country Club on

Thursday, March 29th.

March 26th was the annual trip to Key Biscayne to see all the top players in the world. The Sony Erics-

son Open just gets better every year.

Brenda & Jim Mertz have been asked by People to People to escort 20 student ambassadors to Australia this summer for 16 days. This program was proposed in 1956 by Dwight D. Eisenhower as a peaceful solution for a war-ravaged world. His vision: give everyday citizens of different countries opportunities to meet and get to know each other, and the result will be understanding, friendship and lasting peace. This is great recognition to Jim and Brenda Mertz to

be selected as escorts for a worldwide program.

Mark your calendar for Wednesday, April 4th, which is our last Social dinner event. We will give out awards for our Club Champions and a sunrise movie night

will be taking place with Jim & Brenda hosting.

“Getting in the Swing” With the Missionaires

Dinner Concert on Friday, April 13, 6 o’clock

Mission Valley’s own Missionaires will be presenting their annual concert, “Getting in the Swing,” at the Club on Friday, April 13, starting at 6 o’clock with cocktails before dinner. Back by popular demand, this is the culmination of three months of practice by these choristers, many of whom have been mem-

bers since the founding six seasons ago.

As we go to press with this Valley Views, three-quarters of our available tables have already been reserved, so please make your reservation for this

event as soon as possible.

This program is a compendium of attractive musical pieces from The American Songbook, with favorites for everyone. From opening and closing medleys by the whole ensemble, to duets by Two Englishmen and by the Director and her husband, to the Platters being brought back by the Four Duffers (pictured here), the show has even more variety, showing off your friends and fellow club members in fun and

tuneful ways.

For six seasons, the Missionaires has been led by the founding pair of director Suzanne Johnson and piano accompanist Barbara O’Brian, and their inseparable talent and enthusiasm guides this volunteer mixed chorus. According to Suzanne, “the Missionaires now numbers a record 35 singers. If you love music, can carry a tune, and are willing to make a commit-ment, we would be delighted to have you join our group. Just give Barbara or me a call or drop us an

email and we’ll give you more details.”

It’s that time of year again when we treat the soil for nematodes. The golf course will be closed April 30th and May 1st for our regular scheduled Curfew treatment. By law, there is a 24 hour re-entry period after application, this is why we stay closed the

following day. Curfew is slit-injected into the soil as a liquid and vaporizes under the turf canopy. We apply water to the surface to help seal the vapors underneath the surface. Curfew helps control the population of the harmful nematodes

that feed on the roots of our turf grass.

Nematodes are microscopic worms that pierce into the roots and suck the nutrients out. Some nema-todes live inside the root, while others are attached to the outside of the root. Either way, they are destructive and keep the turf in a constant state of stress. The stress conditions lead to other problems. In times when it is cold with frost, the plant has a greater difficulty in recover-ing. Warm, foggy weather with cool nights is per-fect for disease pressure. Healthy turf can fight diseases better than stressed turf. Cart compaction is also magnified when the turf is under stress. Hence the reason we want to aerify as often as possible. Finally, irrigation water quality can create stress too. Our water source is not very good. Without beneficial rainfall, stressed turf irrigated with poor water struggles to take in the nutrients that are needed to recover. We have a double edge sword here at Mission Valley,

nematodes and poor water.

The rainfall total for the first 3 months of 2012 is around 5 inches below normal. This is bad for us. The white crusty surface that you see on the thin turf is from our irrigation water. In simplest terms, the water source is dehydrating the turf. People, we need rain to help grow healthy turf. The irrigation system is good at distribution but can’t

change our water source.

We are in the process of “oxygenating” the irrigation lake at #6. A new “bubbler” system will be installed capable of flipping 8 million gallons of water in 24 hours. Our irrigation lake holds approximately 7 million gallons. This will help release hydrogen sulfate gases trapped within the water. The extra contact with the oxygen will improve the overall health of the water and some of the problems related to stratisfication of water layers. I think it will be fair to say the area around the 6th tee will have a foul

smell for a few weeks.

GROUND UNDER REPAIR & FLOWER BEDS

Ground under repair on the golf course is deter-mined by white lines. We have some large ground under repair areas on #4 and #5. Take your nearest point of relief plus one club length for relief. The only flower beds on the golf course where you get relief are the beds with either stone or railroad ties around them. If they don’t have stones or railroad

ties around them you do not get relief.

As the saying goes, "April showers bring May flowers”. We are lucky enough to enjoy the beautiful Florida flowers all year long! April also brings a close to “The Season” and many of our fellow golfing friends return North. We are lucky enough though to enjoy a few more

golfing events in the coming weeks.

April 2nd and April 9th are the 9 Hole Championship Rounds for the 2011-2012 season. A sign-up sheet is

posted on the bulletin board in the locker room.

April 16th will be the golfing game of Mutt and Jeff. Your score will be taken on the Par 3’s and Par 5’s. One half of your handicap will be subtracted from

that score for the final tally.

April 23rd is our Closing Meeting, Luncheon and

Golfing Event.

Winners for our March games include:

March 5th - String it out (use of the length of the string once to move the ball anywhere on the course

and not count it as a stroke). First place went to Becky Jablonski with a score of 31. Second place went to Margaret Woods with a score of 32. Noni LaVelle and Barbara Schanz both had chip-ins that

day.

March 12th was Three Lassies and a Laddie. First place went to Jo Ritzi, Alice Hammett and Fred Allen with a score of 28.5. Second place with a score of 29.3 went to Annette Mann, Lynn Paolillo,

Dolores Eichhorn and John Woods III.

Low Putts was the game on March 19th. Kathy Allen and Alice Hammett tied for first place with 14 putts. Second place went to Janet DeAngelo, Mary Jane Park, and Annette Mann with 16 putts. Marilyn DeVita and Bunny Raabe each had a chip-

Did you know… Karen Korf has been the FSGA Women’s Course Rating Team Captain since

1987?!

The Team evaluates golf courses to provide a Course Rating and Slope Rating for the golf courses in Manatee, Sarasota And

Charlotte counties.

The USGA conducts annual Eastern and Western Course Rating Calibration Seminars. Last month the Eastern Calibration Seminar was held at PGA National Golf Club, Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Karen and three other women raters from Florida participated as a Team and received top honors among the women’s teams with a grade 98.0 which included Individual and Team Quizzes in addition to an On-Course Rating Exercise. The grade was based on a comparison to evalua-

tions by the USGA Course Rating Committee.

Kudos to you Karen! We are lucky to have you as our Golf

Chairman.

Recently I was asked by a group of members to give them a short version of our membership types and privileges. It can be VERY

confusing!

Here it is in a nut shell:

Equity—Full golf, tennis and social privileges,

voting rights and ability to serve on the Board.

Associate—Full golf, tennis and social privileges.

Cannot vote or serve on the Board.

Social/Tennis—Tennis and social privileges. Limited golf; 6 rounds between November—April per mem-bership (12 9-hole rounds is okay) and unlimited golf during May—October. Cannot vote or serve on

the Board.

There is a Family and Single rate for all annual members and an age defined schedule for ages 35 and under, 36—45, 46—55 and 56 and over. For all annual members, the Food & Beverage Minimum for a Family is $850 and for a Single $527. You must be unmarried and living alone to receive Single dues

and minimums.

Seasonal—Full golf, tennis and social privileges for 6—8 months (no access during unpaid months) May join the MGA and WGA 18 & 9-hole Associations. Cannot vote or serve on the Board. There is only one fee schedule offered. No Family or Single

differential.

Visiting Guest—Restricted golf, tennis and social privileges for 1—3 months. 24 hour advance tee time only. May not join MGA or WGA. Cannot vote or serve on the Board. No charging privileges. There is only one fee schedule offered. No age, Family or

Single differential.

Summer—Full golf, tennis and social privileges during the summer months. Cannot vote or serve on the Board. There is only one fee schedule offered.

No age, Family or Single differential.
