It is with great joy that we present our new Hadassahbranded Brooklyn Region Winter Bulletin! Todah Rabah toIrene Stundel and Esther Lefkowitz for all their hard workaligning our Brooklyn Region Bulletin in keeping withHadassah’s new branding guidelines! It is a fresh new lookthat speaks to our heritage of “practical Zionism” and cap-tures the dynamism and spirit of Hadassah women here andaround the world. We are Hadassah, the power of womenwho DO!
The month of March, marches in with the merry Jewish holiday of Purim onMarch 4, 2015. This festive, fun celebration for adults and children has a heroine, hero, evil characters, palace intrigue, and courage. It is astounding that this story, that took place centuries ago, is still celebrated around the Jewish world. “This isall more remarkable,” according to Brandeis Professor Shulamit Reinharz, “whenwe consider… that the most important part of the Tanach was Megillat Esther.” For Hadassah, Purim is our holiday. Our founder Henrietta Szold named our
organization for Esther, the brave woman who saved her Jewish people centuriesago. As Bonnie Lipton, Hadassah’s 90th Anniversary National President wrote:“For generations, Esther’s bravery has served as a role model for young girls, inspiring incalculable numbers of Jewish women to action. Purim is a reminderof the bravery of one woman who saved a people. Every day women withcourage, with ideas, with a strong voice, and with an empowered determination, help to insure the survival of our people and in doing, each one of us becomesEsther’s legacy.”On Shabbat Zachor, February 28, 2015 (the weekend before Purim,) we will
gather at the East Midwood Jewish Center to reinforce our mission, our goals, and celebrate our accomplishments. The special morning service will be followedby a delicious and educational “Lunch and Learn.” Bring your family and friendsfor our second annual Hadassah Shabbat Zachor! Then, celebrate Purim with uson March 2, 2015. At our Purim Celebration, we will honor Cantor Sam Levineand enjoy performances by members of the Regina Opera Company produced byEnid and Jack Benezra. Join us on March 8, 2015 for the Brooklyn Associates Family and Friends event:
The Klezmatics - Woody Guthrie Wonder Wheel Tour Concert at the BrooklynCollege - Walt Whitman Theatre. On Sunday April 19, 2015 bring your Mah Jonggcards to our second annual Brooklyn Region Mah Jongg Tournament! Remember, every event you attend brings you joy and sisterhood, and a special feeling inyour heart, that you help support the precious work of Hadassah!Drawing strength from our common goals, with the diversity of our members’
backgrounds, customs and traditions, we come together to heal, to advocate, tosupport Israel, and to educate. With the support of our dedicated HadassahAssociates and friends, we look to the future, building a bridge to peace throughinnovative medical research and state of the art health care. We make it happenbecause we are Hadassah, the power of women who DO!

METRO REGION ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM OCTOBER 26,2014Brenda RosenbaumOur Gail Hammerman, Metro
Resource Chair, opened the
symposium by welcoming
participants from the Metro region
and urging support of Hadassah
programs in Israel and the US. The
morning program featured a panel
discussion including David
Dabscheck, deputy Managing director
of Israel Action Network, and Ellen
Herskin, PRAZE Director, that was
moderated by Roni Schwartz,
Hadassah National Treasurer and then
National Chair for Special Initiatives.
The discussion was informative, and
inspired us with techniques to diffuse
BDS and anti-Israel opinions. For
future reference, we can all refer to The Israel
Action Network (http://israelactionnetwork.org/)
and the Hadassah Advocacy
(http://www.hadassah.org/advocate/) websites for
facts on Israel
Shahar Azani, Consul for Media Affairs at the
Israeli Consulate in New York, is a dynamic speaker
who mesmerized the audience. He noted that
people don’t connect emotionally to Israel, but
mostly identify geopolitically. He then focused on
how to discuss Israel in daily life, by not defending
Israel directly, but by defining Zionism in the 21st
century. Which, incidentally, is the title of an
ongoing online Hadassah program aptly named
“Defining Zionism in the 21st Century”
israel/defining-zionism/). In this program, Hadassah
brings in a new, remarkable speaker each month to
talk about Zionism from his or her personal
perspective. The sessions are interactive, engaging,
and will get you thinking in new ways about Israel,
Zionism, and how they relate to us. We can watch
live (and archived taped) discussions online with
scholars, activists and community leaders.
Miki Shulman, National Guardian Chair, Hadassah
National Missions Chair, and elected member of the
Hadassah Medical Organization Board of Directors,
discussed the financial agreement between HMO,
the Israeli government and the workers. She shared
how HMO will continue to be the lifesaving jewel of
the Israeli crown. She stressed the importance of
supporting HMO as we still need, now more than
ever, $50m to complete floors and underground
surgery bunkers at the Sarah Wetsman Davidson
Hospital Tower in Ein Kerem..
After a delicious lunch, we heard from Rabbi
Marvin Tokayer, author of “Pepper, Silk and Ivory
Amazing Stories about Jews in the Far East”. He
shared that the oldest Hebrew manuscript was
found in Tibet, and intrigued us with stories of a few
of the Jews profiled in his book. Fat Moishe aka 2
Gun Moishe, Two-Gun after an amazing career, flew
to San Francisco when he heard that a vote, on a
resolution proposing the partitioning of Palestine
into two states – one Jewish and the other Arabic –
was to be submitted to the newly formed United
Nations. He convinced the head of the Chinese
delegation to abstain from voting when he learned
they planned to oppose partition. That abstention

CHANUKAH PARTY UPDATE Marlene LempertOn December 22 2014, an
overwhelming number of
Hadassah Brooklyn Region’s
members and friends filled the
Grand Ballroom of the East
Midwood Jewish Center for
the highly anticipated Region
Chanukah Party, honoring our
esteemed member Ruth N.
Siegel.
After people had time to
schmooze with their friends
and enjoy food, Marlene
Lempert, Brooklyn Region
Programming Vice President
and the event Chair, welcomed
the guests. Enid Benezra,
Brooklyn Region Area Vice President, sang the
Hatikvah and the Star Bangled Banner with our
members. Barbara Katz, our Brooklyn Region
Executive Vice President, read an inspiring
invocation. Gail Hammerman, Immediate Past
Brooklyn Region President, beautifully proceeded
to do the Menorah Lighting.
We had a moment of silence as we said farewell
to Past Brooklyn Region Presidents, Francine
Klugerman and Claire Shapiro, and to the Brooklyn
Region Corresponding Secretary, Susan Klein.
These women led by example and were the
embodiment of professionalism, passion and
dedication. They were our friends and mentors, and
will be dearly missed. May their memories serve as
a blessing.
Janet Young, Brooklyn Region President, greeted
everyone and installed the Brooklyn Region 2015
Executive Board: Executive Vice President -
Barbara Katz, Treasurer - Judi Silversmith,
Education Vice President - Brenda Rosenbaum,
Fundraising Vice President – Alma Krull,
Membership Vice Presidents - Ilene Shapiro and
Caryn Tanditash, and Programming Vice President -
Marlene Lempert. Myra and Eleene Schwartz briefly
described the Raffle prizes and rules for
participating. Ethel Gold gave us an update on
Hadassah’s 97th Convention in Las Vegas.
Janet Young Made a presentation in honor of
Ruth N Siegel for an Extraordinary Lifetime of
Dedication to the Mission of Hadassah, for tikkun
olam, and the Brooklyn. Region. The 2014 Brooklyn
Region Journal honors Ruth for her 50 years of
Hadassah membership and commitment, during
which she has held over 25 Portfolios. Her
extraordinary leadership has been a shining
example to everyone who has come to know her.
Hadassah National President, Marci Natan sent a
message of special thanks to Ruth Siegel. Ruth
received the Hadassah National President Award, a
50 Year Membership Pin, and a very large,
beautiful, fragrant bouquet of flowers.
As Ruth spoke and thanked everyone for this
honor, we realized that the gift Ruth has given
Hadassah… is the gift of herself. She spoke of her
early days in Hadassah, her friendships, her
appreciation of Hadassah s education. She told us
about her leadership and planning of conferences,
of her Presidency of Naomi Hannah Yassky, and her
Presidency of Tamar and the wonderful people she
met in Hadassah. We were delighted that Ruth
enjoyed the wonderful reception she received from
everyone. We were also delighted that her daughter
Amy was there to share this joy with her.

BAY RIDGE CHAPTER, Barbara Gershuny & Carol Dolman, Co-Presidents
AROUND THE REGION
Good health and much happiness in the New Yearto all in the Hadassah family. Following our lastevent, "The Seasons of Our Lives," an afternoonwith famed author, Yona Zeldis McDonough, theBay Ridge Chapter presented a program entitled,"Breaking Glass, Breaking Lives -- Kristallnacht/Holocaust Remembered" on November 9th, 2014,the anniversary of Kristallnacht. Attendeesgathered at Vicolo Restaurant in Bay Ridge for adelicious dairy meal, followed by personal stories ofKristallnacht and the Holocaust. Carol Dolman welcomed everyone and then
Barbara Gershuny began the program with a piececalled "Shattered Memories" that commemoratedthe 76th anniversary of Kristallnacht/ The Night ofBroken Glass followed by a personal story writtenby Frederic Morton, the author of "The Rothschilds"that describes the harrowing experience faced byhis family during Kristallnacht. Atypically lucky, theentire Morton family survived the ordeal andemigrated to America where they achieved theAmerican dream.
Ruth Merdinger, our next presenter, shared herpersonal story of survival. After her arrival in theU.S., Ruth enrolled in the Beth Israel School ofNursing program where she earned her nursingcredential and later a Bachelors degree. Ruthserved as a nurse for many years. Today, she is veryinvolved in the Beth Israel Retired NursesAssociation. This fall, with her family in attendance, the Association honored her for her exemplaryservice. Jenny Krol, the daughter of Hocaust survivors,
presented next. In her inimitable way, she sharedwith us what life was like for the child of Holocaustsurvivors. With her bubbly personality, she gave apresentation that was both poignant and, at times, humorous. The afternoon gave participants a view of the
many aspects of a very grim and inhuman period inour history. At this time the Chapter is planning a February
event. We hope you will join us.
It is with great pride that I have taken on thepresidency of Park Slope Hadassah. Our chapter hasfabulous events, wonderful members and a recordof achievement during its 32 year history. I lookforward to a wonderful year together.Park Slope Hadassah is over 300 members strong,

The organization addressesissues that concern and touch all our lives - fromadvocacy to Zionism, from domestic violence tohuman rights, from heart issues to healthcareresearch - Hadassah is at the genesis of importantissues. As one of many Hadassah chapters across the
nation, we contribute to the overall health of theorganization, and the support of Hadassah Hospitalin Jerusalem. The membership and fundraising goalsof the chapter are part of a larger plan set by thenational office and support the organization'sactivities in Israel. During the next year, I will bereaching out to each of you for help meeting thegoals set for our chapter. I am confident you will bethere to assist.I have already met with the board and we have

AROUND THE REGION
As I write this column, my attention keeps beingdrawn to the window and the snowflakes that flylike feathers from an old featherbed. Oh please! Not another season like the winter of 2014!We celebrated Chanukah with a huge turnout of
Dena women who donated toys, through ChaiLifeline, to hospitalized children. Now that we arefollowing the mandate of National and haveadopted the secular calendar rather than thepreviously used Hebrew or academic one, many ofthe events that had occurred in May and June havenow found their way into December and January. The Installation of Officers, that was always a Mayhappening, became part of our celebration ofChanukah. It was lovely to see all of the women whobecame Board members light a candle on theChanukiah and pledge themselves to the ideals ofHadassah. The highlight of the evening was themagnificent reading of the Yiddish tale, The Demonof Dubrovna by our own Enid and Jack Benezra. Our first General Meeting of the New Year will
introduce the noted speaker, Florence Manglani, who will talk about her life as a Jewish woman inIndia. Another first for this year will be thePresident’s Luncheon, formerly held in May, that
will take place on January 21st at Il Fornetto. Atthat time we will celebrate with the outgoingpresident (me) and welcome the incomingpresident (that’s me, too!). Our yearly Book Review will take place on
February 11, 2015, just in time to say Happy Birthdayto Abe and George. The book for discussion is“Dangerous Lies” by Diane Chamberlain. Leadingthe discussion will be Barbara Levine and KarenPollack. These two Dena women are phenomenalleaders who have always produced a packed housefor our book talks. The review plus the pizza willequal a delicious afternoon. Many of us enjoyed the Brooklyn Region
Chanukah Party and are looking forward to theRegion Purim Party on March 2nd when Cantor SamLevine will be honored. We may not be Polar Bears, but we will be in Coney Island on March 18th for anAlmost Spring event at Gargiulo’s. Our newfundraisers, Eleene Schwartz and Myra Schwartz, will hostess this event that will be filled withfabulous raffles, great food and wonderfulcamaraderie.Congratulations to Hadassah and the rebranding
of the organization to showcase all as modern 21stCentury women.HADASSAH the power of women who DO.
DENA CHAPTERSheila Silverman, President
MEDINAH CHAPTER, Evelyn Pincus, Social Secretary
Shalom Chaverim,
When our January and February recess is over, we will once again get back to raising serious money to
bolster causes in Israel.
We had a very successful luncheon on New Year’s Day. We have not as yet laid out full plans for our
March to June meetings in 2015 but we are planning on having several speakers and generous hostesses
for these 4 meetings.
In April we plan to have our Annual Spring Luncheon. A chairperson will brief all interested parties, when
final plans are made. In June we are arranging for our End of Season Gala, and you will be filled in on the
details at a later date.
We vacation in July and August but we never stop our ongoing fundraising, which includes our simcha
cake at every meeting and the sale of certificates, greetings cards and Mah Jongg cards at every meeting.
We are a small group but accomplish much due to the active participation of all of our members.

METRO SYMPOSIUM continued from p. 5
ultimately helped ensure passage of the measure
partitioning Palestine – and allowing the creation
of Israel. He also discussed Yaakov Rosenfeld, a
general in the army of the Peoples Republic of
China, who is buried in Israel, a Jewish physician
and Holocaust survivor who became a General in
Mao's army and who is deeply revered in China
for having saved the lives of Chinese soldiers and
peasants alike.
Dr. Roy Eldor, a graduate of Hadassah-Hebrew
University Medical School, is now the principal
scientist of late stage development , clinical
research of diabetes and endocrinology at Merck
Research Laboratories in Rahway New Jersey. He
discussed in great detail, the contributing factors
in the development of, and advances in treatment
of Diabetes at Hadassah Hospital.
The event was packed to capacity and we are
all excitedly looking forward to next year’s Metro
Symposium!
CHANUKAH PARTY continued from p. 7
And then by popular demand, we were
entertained with festive Chanukah music by
Cantor Sam Levine. Everyone always loves the
wonderful feeling of listening to his music.
It was such a wonderful program and a
wonderful afternoon, Todah Rabah, thank you to
so many extraordinary people whose dedication
and commitment made this celebration an
overwhelming success.
Do not underestimate the power of women.

FIGHT BDS / PERSONAL ADVOCACY NIGHTNOVEMBER 20, 2014
This packed program,
opened with a beautiful
Invocation from Linda Drucker,
Manhattan Beach President.
Barbara Katz, Brooklyn Region
Executive Vice President, led
everyone in the anthems.
Hadassah National Treasurer,
Roni Schwartz, updated the
over 60 attendees on
Hadassah’s advocacy program
and initiatives on countering
the Boycott, Divestments and
Sanctions against Israel
movement. We learned how
Hadassah’s Leadership Fellows
Program has enabled our
Fellows to advocate more
effectively. Younger attendees
and their parents learned
about the wonderful new
upcoming summer program from Young Judaea.
Rabbi Avi Schwartz discussed the state of Israel,
and the US, regarding Anti-Zionism/Anti-Semitism,
and how it affects you, your family and friends, and
your personal safety. He said he felt that we were
too slow to step up to the defense of Israel in social
media, and stressed the importance of using social
media to counter false claims. He also explained
his smart phone app called Fight BDS, which is a
ready reference of facts for anyone entering in a
dialog on BDS.
Victor Didia, who represented Hillel Brooklyn
College, spoke about campus life as a Jew.
Recalling recent campus events in the news, Victor
said it has not been too bad at Brooklyn College.
He stressed the importance watching out for
biased conferences with BDS agendas, and keeping
the lines of communication open.
The second part of the program was a workshop
on personal safety given by Krav Maga Crash, led
by Daniel Elyashiv, a former Israeli Defense Force
Soldier, and expert in Counter Terrorism. Being in
charge of the Counter Terrorism Division in his unit
YAHALOM (diamond in Hebrew), a Special Unit of
the Engineering Corps, Daniel Elyashiv taught
hundreds of soldiers how to protect themselves
and be aware of the dangers surrounding them -
especially in combat. He discussed
positional/locational awareness with us, and gave
rudimentary insights into the mind set of an
unprovoked attack from both the attacker and
victim’s view point. The Krav Maga part ended
with a practice session in which we practiced a
basic break away technique with each other.
Special thanks to Evelyn and Alfred Gollomp who
worked with the Manhattan Beach Jewish Center to
ensure everything perfect including the delicious
cakes and cookies! Also, thank you to Daniel
Eliashev form Crav Maga Crash, and to the Planning
Committee: Linda Drucker, Evelyn Gollomp,
Barbara Katz, Esther Lefkowitz, Marlene Lempert,
and Brenda Rosenbaum, Rabbi Avi Schwartz and
Janet Young for all their hard work making this
program such a huge success!

BIG DONOR EVENT • OCTOBER 19, 2014
On Sunday October 19, 2014, the lovely home of
Lowell and Alice Fisher Rubin was filled to
capacity, as Brooklyn Region held its annual Big
Donor Reception. Our guest speakers were Shahar
Azani, the Consul for Media Affairs at the
Consulate General of Israel in New York, and Judy
Shereck, Hadassah National Secretary. Everyone
enjoyed schmoozing with Shahar and Judy during
the delicious dairy buffet and dessert.
Shahar discussed Israel’s extraordinary
accomplishments in the technology and biotech
industry. He spoke about the wonderful work
being done at HMO and by the dedicated
Hadassah Members here in the United States.
Discussing Israel’s efforts to counter the BDS
(Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement in
a biased media environment, he also elaborated on
the difficulty Jewish and Pro-Israel advocates face
on the college campus.
Judy Shereck discussed current work being done
at Hadassah Hospital. She stressed the importance
of raising funds to complete the underground
surgical suites. We also learned more about the
upcoming move of Hadassah House to 40 Wall
Street.
We welcomed two new Keepers, Judi Silversmith
and Lynn Reicher, who stepped up at Hadassah’s
National Convention in Las Vegas in July. We also
had the opportunity to present Vivian Singer with
a beautiful certificate on her becoming a Guardian
of the Dream.
Judi Silversmith, shred her personal story of
struggles with Parkinson’s Disease, and how she
has gotten a new lease on life because of Teva's
drug Azilect that was developed by Hadassah
while she was President of Brooklyn Region. She
showed us how steady her hands are now, and that
