The winners sought to “expose and train the com- munity on their unconscious bias in order to prevent violence, job discrimination, and dys- functional relationships” during their presenta- tion to PMI Chicagoland at our monthly June dinner meeting. These three high schoolers beat out six other teams with their clear passion to reduce unconscious bias; winning teams present their projects to their schools, opening new opportunities to win scholarships and gain employment. Sarai was also awarded a $5,000 school scholarship this year! Congratulations to Sarai, her teammates, and all the other project winners at LOV as they enjoy their celebratory excursion to New York this month where they will enjoy sightseeing, cultural prizes & career exploration possibilities. The Ladies of Virtue empowers girls ages 9 to 18 years, living in underserved communities, to lead with confidence and dignity through programs aimed at character development, career readiness, and civic engagement. Jamila Trimuel, Founder & CEO, initiated the Ladies of Virtue in 2011 with a mission to instill purpose, passion, and persever- ance; “A lady of virtue is not a perfect woman but she strives to be the best that she can be in every aspect of her life. She knows that all things are possible through faith, perseverance, hard work and the willingness to succeed.” These young ladies make a commitment to themselves and their community when they decide to be a part of LOV and embark on a transformative mentorship and leadership experience. The goal of the program is 100% placement in employment for all participants ages 16 and over; the Ladies of Virtue have been able to uphold a 95% success employment rate and 100% of their 150 participants are enrolled in college this year. LOV has empowered over 1,000 girls to become confident, purpose-driven leaders, thanks to their 40+ partnerships and commitment of LOV leadership & volunteers. These young thought leaders are following their passions, building confidence, grasping a focus on career aspirations, all while positively transforming their local communities. PMI Chicagoland is proud to have been Ladies of Virtue’s first com- munity partner and have been collaborating since 2012. Through their partnership, the PMI Chicagoland Chapter has been training LOV's young women in project management, serving as Project Advisers to partici- pants in LOV's youth-led service learning program which could then be shared to the membership at PMI Chicagoland’s monthly dinners. This platform allows these passionate individuals to utilize their public speaking skills, confidently showcasing their hard efforts to a diverse audience while building their communication skills and sharing what it means to be a part of a team working towards a shared goal. CERTIFICATION STUDY GROUP

By - Traci Ragas, PMP, CSM (Facilitator)

On July 2, the Chicago-based PMP study group finished eight-weeks of PMP study and preparation. We made it through all 13 chapters of PMBOK and even completed a quick review of the Agile Practice Guide. Each of the five study group participants led at least two weekly sessions, identifying areas they wanted to discuss further and terms that needed clarification.

As the Chicago-based study group facilitator, I’d like to extend a special thank you to the participants for their commitment and dedication: Chandrea Brown, Debra Clough, Michael Ojo, James Thomas and Karen Williams. Debra earned her CAPM early during the study session and I have confidence that everyone in this group will be joining the ranks of PMPs soon!

If you are looking for ways to give back to the Chicagoland chapter, please consider volunteering as a study group facilitator. Sessions are starting in September. Groups are located throughout the Chicagoland area.

Chapter LeadershipThe Leadership Team consists of two groups. There is an elected Executive Board made up of the President, Past President and Vice Presidents. The primary function of this board is to set the strategic plan for the chapter and to oversee the execution of that plan by the Directors and their volunteers. The Directors are appointed by the Executive Board and are responsible for the execution of the strategic plan through the tactical day to day operation of the chapter. The Directors coordinate the efforts of chapter member volunteers to accomplish the activities of the chapter. If you are interested in serving your PMI Chicagoland Chapter, contact our Director of Volunteers for more information.
