Shepherd, Texas June 13, 2018 VOLUME 28 ● NUMBER 24 SHEPHERD COMMUNITY NEWS A Public Service of MCCLAIN’S FOOD MARKET Steelheart by Brandon Sanders 386 pages Genre: Fantasy/Dystopian Summary: Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics. But Epics are no friend of man. With incredible gifts came the desire to rule. And to rule man you must crush his wills. Nobody fights the Epics...nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans, they spend their lives studying Epics, finding their weaknesses, and then assassinating them. And David wants in. He wants Steelheart—the Epic who is said to be invincible. The Epic who killed David’s father. For years, like the Reckoners, David’s been studying, and planning - and he has something they need. Not an object, but an experience. He’s seen Steelheart bleed. And he wants revenge. My Review: This book had the best prologue I’ve read in a long time. I just ADORE a good prologue, don’t you? There are superheroes in this book. I’m using the term “heroes” loosely, however. Very loosely. In fact, let’s just scrap the term “superheroes” and change it to “supervillains”. They have super powers, but they’re evil. Yeah. Supervillains. I like that. These supervillains, called Epics, have taken over the world and our main character, David, absolutely despises them. Especially one Epic in particular: the completely invulnerable Epic named Steelheart. The beginning of this book deserves 5 gold stars; it has action, heroes, villains, emotion, the whole shebang. But through the middle of the book it kind of teeters out a little bit. Just a smidgen. Not enough to discontinue the book, just enough to feel a small twinge of disappointment. A bad ending could’ve completely ruined this book. So it’s a really good thing that the ending was just as epic (←ha) as the beginning. There were not one, not two, but three amazing twists during the ending that I did not see coming. And that made up for David’s constant word-vomit and forcibly lame metaphors. Here is an example of said lame metaphor: “The sensation felt like an unbalanced washing machine filled with a hundred epileptic chimpanzees.” (Cue crickets) Er…right. I get that the metaphors were purposeful in order to make him seem awkward and endearing, but there were too many and they were too forced. So he went from being awkward and endearing to awkward and annoying every time one came out of his mouth. Less talk and more action would’ve been nice. But I have to say this was a fantastic read that everyone (who isn’t super lame) should enjoy. Go pick up one. Or download one. Or borrow one. Just be sure to get your hands on some sort of copy in the very near future. Parental Guidance: 12 and up. Definitely intended for a young adult audience although there is quite a bit of violence in the book. Stand Alone or Series: Steelheart is the first in the Reckoners trilogy (or possible series?). It is followed by Firefight, which was just released January 2015. The third book is titled Calamity and its expected publication is January 2016. There is also a short e-book that takes place between the first and second books titled Mitosis available for download. Price: New, used, and e-book on Amazon from $6.99-$7.66. their re-opening with the first of several classes with Devin Zane, ‘The Science Brain’! The class is for children and space is limited to 24 science fans. Devin looks the part, with his white coat and bow tie.

The children were shown how to make

an eruption, ( a very topical subject just now)

and other scientific experiments. Library Director Helenmarie Johnson read to the group and organized the fun 2 hour class. Call her at (936) 628-3515 for information on Devin’s next class.
