Students endeavor to leave a ever-lasting impression upon their community in a positive manner. On November 9, 2013, Glendale High School’s FCCLA (Family Career Community Leaders of America) Club along with the other Glendale Union High School District Culinary Departments held a bake sale at the Phoenix Public Market and raised $350 to donate to No Kid Hungry, a national charity to end childhood hunger within the United States. Interact, a community service based club supervised by Michelle Scott, joined forces with Social Worker, Danet Garcia, to provide eleven families with a turkey and other foods for the Thanksgiving holiday. Thanksgiving also allowed Student Council and the FCCLA to combine their efforts by serving several families on Friday, November 29, a traditional Thanks-giving dinner along with a day at the movies on Glen-dale’s campus. The donations for food and other items came from faculty and staff members as well as many students. Students from both Student Council, under the supervision of Samantha Sinkovits, and Culinary, super-vised by Chef Shawn Morris, donated their time to serve our community. Student Council along with seventeen clubs and organ-izations gear up for the Festival of Trees event this month. The annual event provides families with a fully decorated Christmas tree to take home and a full tradi-tional Christmas dinner for everyone invited sponsored by FCCLA. The children who attend the night’s event also get to visit Santa Claus for a special surprise. Enter-tainment is provided by Vocal Ensemble. These festivi-ties involve a myriad of clubs and participants as we impact those families positively. Interact is also gearing up for their next community project which will bring supplies and money to the Fam-ilies of Esperanza in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco in Mexico during Spring of 2014.

GHS’s Theatre Department Performs for Young Audiences who played Stella the Storyteller. In an effort to bring performing arts to young audiences, each year the Theatrics class invites neighboring ele-mentary schools to come to see the children’s thea-tre performance, free of charge. This year, over 600 students from Harold Smith Elementary School came to GHS to experi-ence the performance. “I fell in love with theatre when I was 7 years old and I want young audiences to have the same experience,” stated GHS Theatre Director Vanessa Bernal. “Many elementary schools lack fund-ing for the arts, by giving my stu-dents the oppor-tunity to perform for young audiences we can bring the magic of theatre to them. Hopefully they will remember this experience and the joy that watching a live theatre performance brought them.” This year, the group even performed the play at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. “Performing at the children’s hospital was amazing. Seeing the patients smiling and laughing for an hour was the best round of applause we could have received,” stated Ms. Bernal, “I am not sure who enjoyed the experience more, the patients or my students.”

Our school was invited to participate in this promotion supported by Taco Bell -Graduate For Mas. All students are en-couraged to commit online to graduate high school and then they are instantly rewarded with a coupon from Taco Bell for a free taco. The website offers math games, college planning/encouragement tools and a link for students to request good morning wake up calls from vari-ous performing artists that represent

their generation. Students can check in regularly with the website and play games to earn points which can be turned

in for other prizes. The school with the most participation will earn $5000!

In addition to the end prize of $5000, the school has been awarded several other prizes to encourage the students. These prizes include a skateboard which was awarded to Pablo Franco during the Winter Sports Assembly and a $100 gift card awarded to Esperanza Mu-rillo (pictured above with Glen, GHS’s mascot). This month Chris Brady, the Marketing Director of Taco Bell locally, has supplied addition incentives for our students.

The school challenge ends on December 20, 2013, and we are currently holding first place for both regionally and nationally. We hope to continue our success and be able to spend our win-nings to benefit Glendale students.

The magic of theatre was brought to young audi-ences on Fri-day, October 18th by the Glendale High

School’s Theatrics class. The advanced theatre produc-tion class spent weeks rehearsing and preparing the children’s show, “Wolf Tales” including making the costumes, props, and set pieces used to make the story come to life. The play, “Wolf Tales” combines the stories of the three little pigs and little red riding hood. Leo the Hunter and his wife Caroline are hunting the two big bad wolves through the woods. Leo and Caro-

line help to save the three little pigs and rescue Grand-ma by

catching the Big Bad Wolf’s sidekick, Max. In order to spare her friend, the Big Bad Wolf turns herself over to the hunters. The interactive play allows the audience to vote to determine what will happen to the wolves in the end. “I loved performing for and seeing all the little kids smiling and having a great time. It was an unforgetta-ble experience,” commented senior, Nina Sibayan,

November 22 and 23, members of GHS’s International Thespian Troupe #171 attended the annual Arizona State Thespian Conference. The advanced theatre students participated in various workshops including improvisation theatre, stage management, Broadway dance, juggling, accents and creating monsters on stage. Each year, the State Thespian Board awards

a select number of schools with the title of Honor Troupe based on the number of productions the thespians produce as well as their community service projects and their school spirit. GHS’s Thespian troupe produces seven shows, including dinner theatre and a children’s

show. The Thespian troupe also assists other clubs on campus running all of the events in the auditorium and assisting the freshman Link program. Glendale’s Troupe #171 was awarded the title of Gold Thespian Honor Troupe, which is the highest award possible. This award was presented to club president Cristina Ruiz at the state conference.
