On the airwaves of Radio St Barthand Tropik FM on Wednesday,February 22, Bruno Magrasannounced that he is indeed a can-didate in the territorial electionslater this month, heading up thelist Saint Barth D’Abord. Magrasrenounced his earlier decision asannounced on the radio last Janu-ary 11, when he declared that hewas not seeking votes for anotherterm. “In making that decision, Icould not have imagined theimpact that it would have on thepopulation, the anxiety it wouldcause, and the consequences itwould generate in the midst of ourgroup,” he explained on February22 (see the text of his speech).“There are many of you whoasked me to reconsider my deci-sion, and among those, manyyoung people who realize what isat stake and want to get

involved…. I have listened and Ihave heard them. As a result, Ihave decided to change my mindand lead the list Saint Barthd’Abord in the territorial elections.”

Considering the refusal of MichelMagras to add the post of presi-dent of the Collectivity to his roleas senator, Bruno Magras wasforced to make an about-face. OnFebruary 6, at a meeting of groupAvenir Saint Barth, Bruno Magrashad already indicated: “Since Jan-uary 11, I have heard but onephrase: ‘only fools never changetheir opinions.’ Maybe thatencouraged me to change mymind.” In his speech on February22, Bruno Magras noted that thelist he will head will be “some-what revised.” In speaking with LeJournal de Saint Barth, the presi-

dent confirmed that this list isalmost completed and requires justsome adjustments in terms of theorder of those included. Before theannouncement on February 22,Marie-Thérèse Weber, GinetteGréaux, Rose-Marie Toutoute-Fauconnier and Jules Brin hadalready decided to retire from thelist at the end of their current term. And Yves Gréaux, currently firstvice president of the Collectivity, will not run again either. On theother hand, the group Saint BarthD’Abord should include AndyLaplace, who had considered join-ing the list of Maxime Desouches.Magras’ list will also comprise, among others, Karine Miot-Richard, elected in 2007 at thehead of her own list, but who hasworked closely with the majorityover the past term. Finally, the listSaint Barth d’Abord will alsoinclude new names of those inter-ested in joining the ranks of theCollectivity.

Bruno Magras has changed hismind about not seeking anotherterm as president of the Territo-rial Council. He is once again atthe head of the partially revisedlist, Saint Barth d’Abord, for theupcoming territorial elections.

The salt pond in Saint Jean isthreatened with a lack of oxygen. An example was seen a few weeksago, when the edge of the pondwas lined with dead fish. Thepond has been also filling up withsilt and as a result is less and lessable to play its important role as afilter of nutrient-rich runoff thatcome down from the surroundinghillsides. As a result, there is riskof serious pollution from the pondflowing into the nearby bay ofSaint Jean. At which point, saygoodbye to its picture-postcardperfection. Because the salt pondin Saint Jean, like the other fourremaining in Saint Barthélemy(Saline, Toiny, Grand Cul-de-Sac,and Petit Cul-de-Sac) is essentialto the preservation of the island’secosystem. “If nothing is done, thebay of Saint Jean is condemned. It

will be filled with silt and coveredwith algae, and the coral reef willdie. It is important that peopleunderstand the long-term conse-quences if there is no action tak-en,” explains Hélène Bernier, president of the non-profit associ-ation, Saint-Barth Essentiel. Sev-eral years ago, this problem wasbrought to the attention of busi-nessman Roman Abramovich whoowns a home in Saint Barthélemy, and was interested in a possibleclean-up project. The manager ofhis property on the island, JimBoos, had heard about a similarproblem at one of the salt ponds inAnguilla. Work was done to cleanup that pond, and it has been ingood shape ever since. Would itbe possible to do the same thing inSaint Barthélemy? To find out,Abramovich financed a study car-

ried out by expert Americanmarine engineers from OceanEarth Technologies. In 2010, thisteam of scientists got to work onmultiples analyses, primarily how

the salt pond interacts with thebay of Saint Jean, in order to pro-pose a project that would restorethe pond. The first step in the pro-posed project would be to dredge

the bottom of the pond to removethe silt and increase its depth. Thesilt, once collected, if there is noway to remove it completely, could be used to create an artifi-cial island in the center of thepond, re-planted with vegetation. To help the pond play its role as afilter, a one-meter-wide trenchwould be dug all the way around,in order to collect sediment thatcomes from nearby hillsides dur-ing heavy rains. And finally, toreestablish the flow of water, theproject proposes tunneling anunderground canal to connect thepond and the bay. The waterwould flow into the bay past theEden Rock. Boos has presentedthis project to Bruno and MichelMagras, and it was recently sentto the Collectivity’s technicalservices office by way of Saint-

Barth Essentiel. “There could befour to five years of workinvolved,” calculates Sophie Oli-vaud, director of technical servic-es. While they don’t have an exactfigure, it is probable that this workwould cost no less than 3.5 mil-lion euros. Would the Collectivitybe able to finance the project, especially at the same time as oth-er expensive projects such as theEHPAD (old age home) are underconstruction? “In order for thingsto move forward, it is necessarythat the population clearly makesits interest known for this to hap-pen,” states Boos.

Be r n a d e t t eB e u z e l i nbrought a blend

of classical, jazz, andCaribbean music to theAnglican Church on Fri-day and Saturday, Feb-ruary 24 & 25, as part ofher annual festival “LesNuits Caraïbes” whichcelebrates its 10thanniversary with per-formances in Martiniqueand Guadeloupe throughMarch 10. Her festivalwas born at a coffeeplantation in Guade-loupe, and is now anitinerant event encom-passing three weeks, three islands, and a ros-ter of talented singersand musicians. Singingwas in fact a major motifin the concerts here. Thefirst evening, “WorldMelodies,” featured afabulous mezzo-soprano,Betty Famibelle, whoserepertory included beau-tiful renditions of several

operatic arias—her “Macoeur s’ouvre à ta voix”from Saint-Saens’ Sam-son et Dalila was a bigcrowd pleaser. The sec-ond half of the programfeatured soprano Rose-mary Phillips who addeda jazzy note with songsas “Besame Mucho”,although she might havereally been able to showoff her talent in a cabaretsetting rather than achurch. The two ladies

of song joined forces fora few songs to close theevening, includingGershwin’s “Summer-time” and “I Got PlentyO’Nuttin,” both from“Porgy and Bess,” whichprovided a great show-case for these contrast-ing voices (Famibellewas born to sing the roleof Bess!).

The second evening wasrather unusual: YvesHenry on piano with ablend of “water music”by Berlioz, Debussy,Ravel, and others, played in juxtapositionto poetic passages recit-ed by famous Frenchactress Marie-ChristineBarrault, whose classi-cally trained voice rangclear in the church, songs by mezzo-sopranoFrancine Watremez(although the mezzovoice of Famibelle

might have been morewell suited), and a fewpassages for violinplayed by Jason Meyer(we were not treated toany of the Klezmermusic for which he isrenowned). An ambitious program:one with the various ele-ments woven together asan ode to the island onthe theme of water.

An event like this under-scores the need for a realtheatre in Saint Barth, where a concert piano, proper lighting, andcomfortable seats wouldenhance the performanc-es. But luckily theAnglican Church is gen-erous enough to allow itsbuilding to house suchconcerts, and theseartists are willing toshare their talents in aninformal, yet charming, setting.

The 2012 St Barth Buck-et Regatta takes placeMarch 22-25

With over 45 yachts onthe roster for the 2012 StBarth Bucket, this annu-al regatta for sailboatsover 100’ in length maybe the biggest one yet.Among the entries isVirago, the 30m Frerssloop built by NautorSwan, who took tophonors last year and willbe back on the startingline to defend the title. The largest yacht is the62m Holland Jachtbouwschooner Athos. Closebehind is 60m Heitaros, launched in 2011, while12 of the current entries

are 50 meters or larger.Four J-Boat classics,Endeavour, Hanuman,Ranger, and Velsheda, will enjoy a race within arace, as they vie for over-all Bucket honors andcompete against eachother. The fleet is divided intothree categories: Les Ele-gantes des Mers, LesGrandes Dames desMers, and Les Gazellesdes Mers, making theracing at once moreequally competitive, aswell as safer. “There area number of steps onecan take to enhance safe-ty for super-yacht racing, particularly with a bigfleet. And we are taking

all of them,” says racedirector Peter Craig ofPremiere Racing. “Thisincludes custom rulesapproved by the Interna-tional Governing Body ofthe sport of sailboat rac-ing. We take additionalsteps such as dividing thefleet into three classeswhere they sail slightlydifferent courses, hencedifferent turning marks.C o m m u n i c a t i o n sbetween yachts, designat-ed safety officers, andminimum separation of40 meters are just three

of many steps we take toensure that the St BarthBucket is a safe race forthese spectacular yachts.”The "Big Five" sailingyacht builders (PeriniNavi, Royal Huisman,Holland Jachtbouw,Alloy Yachts, and Vit-ters) have for many yearssupported the BucketRegatta, and all haveboats represented thisyear.
