Program Philosophy and Purpose

The purpose of the community project is to provide participants with an additional

educational experience beyond the monthly sessions. Participants are expected to gain the following from the community project:

• Experience in community problem solving and issue resolution; • Knowledge about a community organization while seeking resolution of a problem or issue; • Experience in working effectively in a group setting; • Knowledge that they can make a significant contribution to the well-being of the community; • An opportunity to demonstrate leadership.

Participants select their projects after learning about opportunities confronting the community and according to their interests. The projects selected are outlined in this book.

If you or your organization have a topic with community-wide impact and you would like a future Leadership Marshfield group to help solve it, contact us.

A huge thank you is extended to Diane Wolf for her facilitation and leadership of the projects portion of this program, and monthly review of the leadership habits.

Special thanks to Sally Cutler who facilitated the two-day retreat, setting the tone for the entire program.

MACCI’s first Leadership Class graduated in May 1993. This 2013 class was recruited in

the summer of 2012. Members participate in a series of eight informative one day programs and develop group projects designed to meet each individual’s interests and community needs.

The Leadership Marshfield Program can best be defined as:

• Identifying and developing current and future leaders. • Acquainting these leaders with community needs and problems. • Enabling these individuals to be better prepared to face the issues and problems which will confront our community’s future. • Preparing and challenging them to become involved.

This book is a result of our 21st year’s efforts. We present to you, the community, our 2013 graduates of LEADERSHIP MARSHFIELD.

Boating on Marshfield’s Upper Pond Loads of Love

Participants: Jim Schmidt Troy Weik

Description of Project:This project addresses an opportunity to utilize one of very few bodies of water in Marshfield for both exercise and recreation. Specifically, this project allows for an opportunity to utilize the Wildwood Park “Upper Pond” by those who own non-motorized watercraft. This project will provide an opportunity to increase the quality of life in Marshfield by greater utilization of Marshfield Parks and is also consistent with the Healthy Lifestyles Initiative to provide another activity that promotes physical activity.

This project required the updating of a City Ordinance that currently dis-allows such activity and the completion of the approval process by city elected or appointed officials.

Status of Project:Currently, a draft ordinance has been written and supported by the Marshfield Parks and Recreation Director and we anticipate the next step of review and approval by the Parks, Recreation, and Forestry committee in May of this year. Once this approval is received, the ordinance will go before the members of the common council for two public readings in May or June.

Participants: Becki Balz Sara Bloczynski Kurt Officer Marnie Peterson Ashley Winch

Description of Project:The Loads of Love project provides financially struggling families with the opportunity to do their laundry on a more regular basis by assisting them with the cost and accessibility to laundry machines and detergent. This service will be available for those in need due to financial or life circumstances by referral through a local human service agency.

Status of Project:Loads of Love has received funding from United Way for a six month pilot of the program. The Loads of Love project team is meeting with local agencies to discuss providing referrals for families requesting assistance with doing their laundry. We are also in the process of working with John Baltus to convert a couple of washing machines and dryers to accept tokens at the Baltus Laundromat on the north-side of city. The tokens and laundry soap will be distributed to the families at the time of referral. We are planning to work with local youth groups, churches and other organizations to supply the laundry soap. We are currently experimenting with different homemade laundry soaps to have a recipe we can provide to suppliers.

Mentorcycles Leadership Academy Retreat Day

Participants: Kristina Bohn Jeff Knoeck Jody Geurink Patti Sternitzky

Description of Project:A previous leadership group started the Missing Link Program which allowed the Marshfield Clinic Youth Net to team up with St. Vincent de Paul to allow students to repair bicycles. They were able to get funds available to get this program up and running. The program will now, in addition, team up with the Marshfield Police Department to allow for additional bicycles that have been abandoned and need fixing. The students will repair the bicycles as needed, sell some of them as a fundraiser to keep the program going, and then also make some of the bicycles available to children in the Marshfield area who can’t afford them. We also want to find or build a storage facility for Youth Net to use to keep these bicycles in.

Status of Project:We are researching possible storage facility options. Ideally we would build a storage facility for them so that if they move from their current location, they could take the facility with them. If, instead, we find an existing storage facility for them to use that is near their location, we will then look for a trailer they can use to take bikes in between the two locations. We are also contacting different people throughout the school system to try and find out which kids are in need of bicycles. We are looking into a possible referral program to distribute bicycles to these children. In addition, the ThinkFirst chapter of Ministry Health Care, St. Joseph’s Hospital sponsored by the Children’s Miracle Network are supporting and providing bike helmets to youth recipients of a bike through the Youth Net program.

We anticipate that during the 2013-2014 school year, there will be bicycles repaired and available to sell and give away to children.

Participants: Debbie Appleyard Jessica Frahm Melissa Krause Jenny Shermo Dana Upton

Description of Project:We have planned and organized a day for the Leadership Academy group on April 15th. We will be reviewing the “7 Habits of Highly Effective Teen” through activities. It is a chance for them to interact and build on their leadership skills.

We are also helping Grant School Leadership Academy students with their playground painting project. They are in need of supplies and help organizing and coordinating volunteers with a day to complete the project.

Status of Project:The Retreat Day will be on April 15th, 2013.Grant School playground painting project will be complete in May 2013.

Vox Rox The Community Transitional Shelter Playground

Participants: Chris Anderson Donna Dolgner Chris Schwanz DuWayne Swan Jayne Thill

Description of Project:To design and build a playground on the future site of the Frederic Ozanam Transitional Shelter. The shelter, for which ground will be broken this spring and with construction oversight provided by Habitat for Humanity, will provide emergency and transitional housing to help qualified families meet their basic needs. The goal for every family residing in the shelter will be to help each return to living productive, self-sufficient lives in the Marshfield community.

One aspect of the overall project is to provide a safe and fun playground area to be used by shelter families. An area of approximately 25 feet by 50 feet is being set aside, directly behind the shelter facility. The perimeter of this area will be fenced. Funds or gifts in kind are being sought to purchase or acquire playground equipment. The project also includes landscaping the playground area.

The shelter will be located at the corner of Vine and Depot Streets in Marshfield.

Status of Project:Our group has met during Leadership Marshfield event days and has begun to meet on separate occasions. We have had several meetings with Dennis Boucher, president of the St. Vincent’s board of directors and transitional shelter project overseer. Currently we are researching various retailers for playground plans and equipment. Contacts have been made with a Thrivent Engagement Team agent for possible matching fund assistance, a local retailer for possible donation of fencing, a local rental agency committed to providing needed heavy equipment, and with the directors of Shirley’s House of Hope and Dr. Bents who have had experience with local playground projects. Our group is committed to seeing the transitional shelter playground project through to its completion, which we hope will be this summer.

Participants: Ann Dieringer Dori Knoff Brittany Lueth Jessica Mannigel John White, Jr

Description of Project:Vox Rox The Community is intended to be an annual event that will accomplish two goals.

• Raise awareness of the Vox Concert Series as a solid and valued entertainment choice in the City of Marshfield • Raise funds and awareness for a worthy community project

The inaugural event will raise funds for the Marshfield Public Library / Community Center project.

Status of Project:The event is scheduled for May 16th. Letters soliciting donations for items to be given away through drawings have recently gone out. Sponsorship levels have been established and letters to potential sponsors are now being distributed. The event will feature two musical artists; Jenn Bostic and Connie Lim.

Leadership Marshfield Alumni Network“How do I stay involved in Leadership Marshfield?”

The Leadership Marshfield Alumni Network allows graduates to stay involved in the Leadership Marshfield program. It provides ongoing support, new leadership and learning opportunities for alumni and fellowship for current and previous participants.

Current Alumni activities include the following:

- “Adopt A Highway” Each year, alumni members pick up trash along a two-mile stretch of Highway 13 between Marshfield and Pittsville as part of the state’s program.

- Continuing Leadership Various workshops are offered to strengthen professional development skills.

- Scholarships are made available to individuals interested in participating in the Leadership Marshfield program, through the Leadership Marshfield Alumni. Individuals must be employed by a non-profit organization.

- Grant dollars are awarded to the current class should they request start-up dollars for their projects.

This is the beginning of a new day.

You have been given this day to use as you will.

You can waste it or use it for good.

What you do today is important

When tomorrow comes,
