November 19, 2017 ~ 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time Page 3
Dear Parishioners, This weekend we come together to continue our journey as we celebrate the Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time. As we know, each day of our lives presents us with challenges. What do we do, how do we react, are questions each of us faces every day.
While the reading from Proverbs focuses on a “wife”, could the same be said for any spouse in different ways? Parents work each day to provide for their family’s needs. It’s not an easy task as one discovers that life is not simple. Nevertheless, spouses seek to support one another in the midst of life’s problems. Not only do they seek to support, but they also seek to provide for the needs of the whole family.
Could it be that we are seeing the same thing as Matthew tells this story of Jesus’ ministry? Most likely all of us are quite familiar with this incident: Master going on a journey, the giving of “talents” to servants; the return and the discussion after the return. Perhaps we need to remind ourselves that life continues on day by day. We need to be prepared, to keep sharing the story, to keep the process going of taking care of the whole family. We simply cannot be like the servant who took his “talent” and buried it. We simply have to keep putting one foot in front of the other and continue on day by day.
Respectfully, UPCOMING EVENTS: Monday, Nov. 20, 7:00 pm Finance Council meets in the Conference Room. Tuesday, Nov. 21, 10:00 am Jefferson Community Ministries Board meets in the JCCM Building Conference Room, Charles Town. Thursday & Friday, Nov. 23 & 24, THANKSGIVING HOLIDAYS - Eucharist will be at 9:00 am on both days.

On Veterans' Day, the St. James American Heritage Girls and Trail Life USA troops showed their appreciation for our American veterans by marching in the Bolivar-Harpers Ferry Veterans' Day Parade, serving as honor guard during the wreath ceremony, and serving coffee and donuts to veterans.
Some of our own parishioners who are veterans joined us at daily Mass and were present for the blessing of the dedication plaque for our Veterans’ & Chaplains’ window. Although we often include our military, security, and intelligence communities in our prayer intentions, it
is also important for us to pray for vocations to military chaplaincy. We were blessed to have retired military chaplain Fr. George Pucciarelli serving at our parish before he was assigned as the pastor to St. Bernadette’s in Hedgesville.
Approximately 25% of the armed forces list their faith as Catholic. So when you pray for vocations, please pray for those who will serve our military and their families.

Knights of Columbus’ Keep Christ in
Christmas Poster Contest
All youth age 5-14 are invited to use their imagination and create a 11x17” poster that captures the theme “Keep Christ in Christmas”. Posters are due by Sat., Dec. 2 and will be displayed at the annual Breakfast with St. Nicholas on Sun., Dec 3. Poster paper can be picked up at CCD. Please submit posters at St. Zita’s and write child’s name and age on the back of the poster.
Honoring Veterans
Veterans presented the gifts at daily Mass on Veterans’ Day. Following Mass Father Escalante blessed the dedication plaque for the Veterans’ & Chaplains’ window (upper level in south transept). The plaque is located in the narthex and recognizes chaplains and veterans who have served in the military. Please contact John Sherwood at sacristan@ stjameswv.org for any corrections or omissions or to add a dedication to the plaque. A special thanks to all the individuals and organizations who made the window and plaque possible.

Donate to our Saint Store Our CCD students get to go shopping twice a year at the Saint Store with the points they’ve earned by their virtuous behavior. They look forward to choosing items and proudly bringing them home to share with their families. Are you getting religious items in the mail from charities? Do you have religious items that you would like to donate to the Saint Store? Donations can be dropped off at the parish office marked CCD Saint Store.
As the cold & flu season begins, we could use some donations of Clorox wipes & hand sanitizers. Thanks!
Playground & Pizza Party
Two things kids love! You can help bring them together when you donate your Box Tops to St. James. CCD classes have been competing to bring in the most Box Tops this fall to help with our playground. The class with the most Box Tops wins a pizza party. You can help by giving your Box Tops to one of the students you know or you can put them in the box outside of St. Zita’s. Thank you for supporting our youth & the playground project.

JOINING OUR PARISH and becoming a part of our parish family is easy and rewarding. Registration forms can be found in the Narthex or Parish Office. Once a registration form is submitted, new parishioners will receive a welcome packet and an invitation to learn more about St. James and meet some of your new family members. Get connected, get involved, register today. If you move, kindly let us know. BECOMING CATHOLIC at St. James begins with a religious education process called RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Through RCIA, people learn about the Catholic Faith and prepare to become full members of our Catholic family. This process is also available for children and teens. CATHOLICS RETURNING HOME is a program that provides a warm welcome to all desiring to return to the Catholic Church. Voice your concerns and get answers to your questions. Contact Linda Bryan at returnhome@stjameswv. org. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION As adults, our second most important job is raising our children in our Catholic faith. (Our most important job, of course, is maintaining our own relationship with our Heavenly Father.) Families registered in our parish may enroll their children in religious education as early as the age of three. Contact the Allie Enos at [email protected]. Check the bulletin for postings of adult faith formation classes. They are offered on a regular basis and will be listed in the bulletin. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM is the first sacrament by which we receive a new and spiritual life and the dignity of adoption as children of God and heirs of God's kingdom. Registered families may celebrate this sacrament at St. James after attending one of the Baptism classes offered the last Sunday of each month at 1 pm. Register for the class with the parish office before the birth of your baby. SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE celebrates a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman. If you are a registered, active member of the parish considering this vocation, you must meet with Carol Dindinger at least six months before your desired wedding date. No date will be set prior to that meeting. To begin this process, contact Carol at [email protected] or the parish office. SACRAMENT OF ANOINTING formerly known as Last Rites or Extreme Unction, is a ritual of healing. Should you or a family member be entering the hospital, preparing for surgery, or nearing death, contact the Parish Office. THE HISTORIC CHAPEL OF ST. PETER in Harpers Ferry celebrates a “Tourist” Mass on Sundays at 11:00 am. The Chapel is also open to visitors on weekends from 12:00 noon until 4:00 pm most weekends from May through October.
