INTRODUCING KARLOVY VARY

WELCOME TO KARLOVY VARY!

Karlovy Vary lies in West Bohemia at the confluence of the Teplá River and the Ohře River, about 120 km west of Prague. It is the largest and best-known spa city in the Czech Republic.

Charles IV founded the city in the 14th century. According to the legend, the Emperor had the city built soon after the accidental discovery of thermal springs by his hunting retinue. The spa facilities enjoyed the favour of many aristocratic houses and rich burghers as early as the 16th century. Owing to a series of natural disasters, only a few buildings have been preserved from that period. Most architectonic monuments originated in the 18th and the 19th century when the city experiences a „period of abundance“.

Balneotherapy has been developed and improved since the very establishment of Karlovy Vary to this date. It mainly promotes the recuperation of patients suffering from digestive disorders, metabolic disorders, diabetes, gout, obesity, periodontitis (gingivitis), locomotive system disorders, liver diseases, and diseases of the pancreas, the gallbladder and bile ducts, states after oncological and neurological diseases.

The balneotherapy provided in Karlovy Vary comprises a number of curative procedures. Time-proven spa baths and drinking cure as well as modern methods cryotherapy, floating, laser therapy, etc. are used in treatment.

Both traditional spa treatment and wellness you can savour in Carlsbad sanatoriums, spa hotels and public spas.

The spa treatment provided in Karlovy Vary consists of special procedures based mainly on the use of mineral springs. To achieve desired results, spa treatment must take at least three weeks. After arriving at a spa facility, a client consults one of the spa physicians who perform an initial medical examination and prescribe the most appropriate treatment procedures. The daily schedule of massages, curative baths and drinking cure has to be strictly observed. The effects of the treatment will soon set in. For instance a bubble bath, a carbonic bath, a dry carbonic bath, a peat (mud) bath, a mineral bath, whirlpool, additive baths, warm and cold water jets, a sauna, a steam bath, a classical massage, lymph drainage (manual or instrumental), a reflex massage, a water massage (hydropuncture), laser therapy, paraffin and peat packs, therapeutic physical

exercise (individual or group), water gymnastics, cryotherapy, gas injections (pneumo puncture), oxygen therapy, inhalation, floating, enema rank among procedures, which are commonplace in

most of the spa houses.

PARKING

The spa area is a zone with a strict regime of traffic and very limited parking possibilities, which is marked with No entry with the additional sign that reads “MIMO VOZIDEL S POVOLENÍM A PO ZAPLACENÍ POPLATKU NA MĚSTSKÉ POLICII” (except for the cars

with permission and against payment to the Town police). A written stay certificate serves for a one-off en-try in order to unload and load luggage on the day of arrival and departure. It is necessary to park your car in reserved parking spaces.

This colonnade once served as the esplanade of the Blanenský Pavilion, which was demolished in the 1960’s. Fortunately, the colonnade has survived to this date, which was mainly due to its general reconstruction.

Since 1893, when it was extended to the Rock Spring (Skalní pramen), it has been 132 m long. Its roof supported by 124 Corinth-style columns shelter an orchestra pit and five mineral springs.

The wooden structure inspired by Swiss architecture was meant to arch over mineral springs for a couple of years only. However, when it surmounted the Market Spring and the Charles IV Spring (Tržní and Karla IV.) for more than a hundred years, the local authorities decided to keep it in place and ordered its overall reconstruction.

From the 16th century onward, the geyser of hot mineral water used to be covered in by many structures: a baroque building, an empire colonnade, a cast alloy colonnade or a temporary wooden colonnade. The building was designed in a classicist style. However, it bears many signs of romanticism, which mainly applies to its interiors. Originally, the house was a stable for post office horses. The Manor House has been a place where celebrations and concerts take place.

It towers above the Chateau Colonnade. Its original gothic design was from about 1358; the gate was built upon an order of Charles IV. However, it was destroyed by devastating fire in 1604. This house erected in Stara Louka was the home of J. W. Goethe during many of his stays in Karlovy Vary. Nowadays it serves as a pension.

The oldest preserved structure in the city is found in a district called Rybáře. Its beginnings date back to about the second half of the 13th century when a settlement process started.

ROMANESQUE CHURCH OF ST. LINHART (13TH CENTURY)

The ruins of this roman structure lie near a forest café Linhart. The first mention of the church comes from as early as 1246.

Karlovy Vary will surprise you with a wide range of leisure activities. You cannot be bored here …

The spa region with more than a hundred of kilometres of marked spa walks suitable for tourists as well as for cyclists will lead you to the newly opened St Linhart Rope Centre. For cyclist, there is available a network of cycle paths in Karlovy Vary. Principal one leads along the Ohře River. Cyclobuses and cyclotrains will transport you from Karlovy Vary to your starting point. Visit one of the information centres where you will be provided with tourist guides of spa forests and surroundings or a few variants cycling maps.

In case you cannot imagine a holiday without active recreation and spa walks are not sufficient, make use of one of many sports venues. Sports, especially golf and tennis, have a long tradition in the Karlovy Vary Region.

Karlovy Vary is often visited by golf groupies. There are at least five high-quality golf courses near Karlovy Vary, one of which is in the town centre. Eighteen hole golf course from 1933, which is close to Olšová Vrata, ranks among the best known (also among the oldest not only in the Czech republic, but also in central Europe).

If you like water, the Ohře River is navigable from Cheb to Litoměřice It’s passable from Karlovy Vary almost all year long. The Ohře River flows through beautiful natural scenery and historical places there. If you prefer a swimming pool, there are a newly opened swimming pool complex near KV Arena incl. a whirlpool, a paddling pool, a sauna and a water slide, an open-air swimming pool by the Thermal hotel and an indoor pool in the Elizabeth’s spa at your

disposal. For recreational and relaxation purposes make use of a leisure time centre Rolava, which offers activities for the whole family. For inline skating fans, there is available the Meander Ohře, where there is a playground in addition to the in-line skating trail.

A town with regulated traffic regime - the spa area is a zone with a strict regime of traffic and very limited parking possibilities, which is marked with No entry with the additional sign that reads “MIMO VOZIDEL S POVOLENÍM A PO ZAPLACENÍ POPLATKU NA MĚSTSKÉ POLICII”

(except for the cars with permission and against payment to the Town police). A written stay certificate serves for a one-off en-trance in order to unload and load luggage on the day of arrival and departure. It is necessary to park your car in reserved parking spaces.
