The Types of Climates

This is one of the most extreme climates that the Earth features

A Polar Climate is a climate where the mean temperature of the WARMEST month is below 10 degrees Celsius.

There are two types of polar climates

Polar Climate

The Tundra Climate is almost exclusive to the Northern hemisphere. It is a treeless, bleak, cold, desolate area. Think of Hoth from Star Wars…

Tundra Climate

The ice-cap climate is probably the worst place to stay… Think Antarctica!

An Ice-Cap Climate is an area where no single monthly mean is above 0 degrees Celsius… That’s pretty bad.

Ice Cap Climate

In a broad sense, these extreme climates are quite far from us. What form of danger could they give us? Why should we take caution?

Well. For one. Global Warming. I’m not even kidding. As the global climate gets warmer, these ice-caps and frozen tundras are starting to melt, causing an increase in tide size and ocean size, cutting back how much land we have…

Now. How can these effect ME?

Polar bears NEED these ice caps and frozen areas to hunt and thrive. Poor polar bears… A decrease in ice caps and frozen areas means a decrease in polar bears. A decrease in polar bears means an increase in fish population. Nothing against fish, but there are a lot of them out there.

WWK How does the ocean and atmosphere affect

the Earth’s climate? The ocean is the Earth’s largest reservoir of moisture, and both the

earth and the atmosphere store and exchange energy that forms heat, moisture and momentum.

The changes in the energy balance between the Earth’s oceans and the Earth’s atmosphere play an important role in the planets climate change.

Weather- The state of the atmosphere at a place and time as regards heat, cloudiness, dryness, sunshine, wind, rain, etc.

◦ Climate- The weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period.

Thermal Energy- In thermodynamics, the internal energy of a thermodynamic system, denoted by U, or sometimes E, is the total energy within the system. ....

Ocean & Climate Facts Just like the oceans affect weather patterns, they

play a major role in the Earth's climate system. The oceans have tremendous thermal energy

which can slow the rate of climate change. The upper ten feet (3 meters) of the ocean holds

as much heat as the entire atmosphere. The moderating effect of ocean temperature

reduces the daily and annual range of coastal temperatures.

What caused the change? Greenhouse gases have a huge part in the change of

climate on Earth. The greenhouse effect occurs when the energy of the Sun is trapped in the Earth's atmosphere; without it, the Earth would be covered in ice.

Since there has been an increase in man-made greenhouse gases in the 20th century, they have been blamed for an average worldwide rise in temperature of 1 degree F and could lead to further warming with destabilizing effects on the climate.

You can see the evidence of this in urban heat island which refers to the study proven fact that temperatures within cities are generally higher than in the rural areas.

How the climate changes: The climate changes because the main

problematic gases released in terms of pollution are carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Both of these gases trap the heat of the sun and therefore heat up the climate.

Vocabulary Urban heat island- Refers to the fact that

temperatures within cities are generally higher than in rural area.

Greenhouse effect- Is the warming of the surface

and lower atmosphere of a planet that is caused by conversion of solar radiation into heat in a process involving selective transmission of short wave solar radiation by the atmosphere, its absorption by the planet's surface, and radiation which is absorbed and partly reradiated back to the surface by atmospheric gases

What is a Biome? A biome is a large group of similar

ecosystems, usually identified by the abundance of certain types of plants.

Tundra Very harsh, cold winters. Contains a variety of lichens, moss, and

grass. Animals: Polar bear, Caribou, Arctic Fox,

Snowy Owl, Musk Ox, Arctic Hare.

Taiga Contains lakes, marshes, and bogs. Limited variety of plants and animals. Dominated by conifers. Animals: Black bear, Bald Eagle, Bobcat,

Red Fox, and River Otter.

Tropical Rain Forest Tall trees (great varieties) Most plants are evergreen. Receives high amount of rainfall. Animals: Chimpanzee, Orangutan, King

Cobra, Bengal Tiger, and Harpy Eagle.

Temperate Deciduous Forest Contains deciduous, hardwood trees. Limited number of animal species. Animals: Bald Eagle, Black Bear, Coyote,

White-tailed dear, and squirrels.

Grasslands Also known as prairie or plains. Annual precipitation: 20 inches. Animals: Bison, Giraffe, Rhinoceros, Lion,

Ostrich, and Prairie dogs.

Desert

Desert: a hot, arid region with sparse plant life.

Annual precipitation: Less than 10 inches. Extremely dry, mild climate. Animals: Lizard, Toad, Tortoise, and Coyotes.

Chaparral Annual precipitation: 20-30 inches. Very dry summers. Contains deciduous and evergreen trees. Animals: Jackrabbit, Grey Fox, Puma, Skunk,

and Goats.
