ABOUT THE PROJECT

In Summer Term 2014, the Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology (BGHS) invited its doctoral researchers and international guests to take part in a photographic art project, A Portrait of a Young Researcher.

In cooperation with the Arts and Design Depart-ment at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, participants met with photography students and arranged photo shootings. The results of the team-work are presented in the following catalogue and in a permanent exhibition at the BGHS.

For the BGHS researchers, the photographic project provided a great opportunity to present their topics, and themselves as young researchers, to the general public. For the photographers, the project was a chance to learn more about current research projects in history and sociology and to think about how to make portraits of researchers.

In close collaboration, many different portrait forms were created. Some of these images confirm our preconceived ideas of historians and sociolo-gists and their research. But others portray them in ways we have never seen and did not expect. In every sense these pictures – at the interface between arts, social sciences and the humanities – are amazing, creative and high quality photo graphic portraits.
