Question

What foods are most likely to attract

ants on a picnic?

Page 3: A picnic in the park

Research

Pavement ants, or, Tetramorium caespitum, are

black or brown and usually make their nests in and

under pavement.

They mainly live in the eastern United States.

Pavement ant colonies usually have 3,000 – 4,000

members and several queens.

Pavement ants eat insects, grease, seeds,

honeydew, honey, bread, meats, nuts and cheese.

Pavement ants are not a health threat, but can

contaminate food by leaving waste behind.

Page 4: A picnic in the park

Hypothesis

Pavement ants and most of the other

ants that I read about, seem to like sweet

foods like melon and honey.

My hypothesis is that the sweeter foods,

the chocolate icing and the regular jelly,

will attract more ants than the other

foods.

Page 5: A picnic in the park

Procedure

1. Turn a plate upside down and trace 5 circles the

same size around the plate and number them 1-5.

2. Place ½ tsp. of reduced sugar grape jelly in circle 1,

½ tsp. of grape jelly in circle 2, ½ tsp. of peanut

butter in circle 3, ½ tsp. of mayonnaise in circle 4,

and ½ tsp. of chocolate icing in circle 5.

3. Place plate outside near an active ant pile .

4. Count and record the time and number of ants in

each circle every 5 minutes for 75 minutes.

5. Repeat steps 1-4 at two other times of the day, to see

if ants are more active in the morning, afternoon, or

late afternoon.

Average Ant Visits Per Picnic Item

Page 19: A picnic in the park

What are the confidence

levels of these averages?

σ

Reduced sugar jelly 18.7 8.74

Jelly 10.3 2.52

Peanut Butter 8.7 4.04

Mayo 29.3 6.03

Chocolate icing 8.3 1.53

Page 20: A picnic in the park

This leads to the following confidence intervals:

Reduced sugar jelly: 18.7± 1.1

Jelly: 10.3 ± 0.3

Peanut Butter: 8.7 ± 0.5

Mayo: 29.3 ± 0.8

Chocolate Icing: 8.3 ± 0.2

Conclusion

My hypothesis was incorrect, the data shows

that mayonnaise, with 95% confidence, was the

most popular item for the ants at any time of

the day. This means you should protect your

potato salad and ham sandwiches more than

your desserts and peanut butter & jelly

sandwiches when you are on a picnic. Next time

I would like to look at possible ways of keeping

the ants away completely such as using OFF or

having a citronella lamp.
