PRESIDENT’S LUNCHEON SPEAKERMarlene Hyde, President Marlene Hyde CCE EVP, has 38 years’ experience in project controls, estimating, scheduling, and project management. She has been active in AACE® since 1991, and was certified as a CCE in 1993 and as an EVP in 2009. She has held a number of AACE® positions including president of the Albuquerque section for 2 years and VP-Programs in North Florida, and currently serves as President on the AACE International Board of Directors. She previously served as the VP of Finance from 2006-2008 and on the Certification Board. She has been actively involved with the Women in Project Controls task force and committee since its inception. She is currently a project controls consultant on large government projects for the Department of Energy, State Department, Army Corps of Engineers and others. She also volunteers with Wycliffe Associates, working on schedules and managing projects in various parts of the world. Her career has included constructing hospitals, an Intel manufacturing plant, office buildings, research facilities, and airports. Over 30 years ago, she was the first woman to obtain a master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of New Mexico.

Neil Peterson, Life Coach/Speaker Neil is an affiliate member of the National Speakers Association and frequently speaks to organizations. Neil brings energy, passion and excitement to his speeches and has a unique talent for finding a way to touch every person in the audience. He has extensive experience as an event, meeting, luncheon, and dinner speaker for various outlets, from corporations, trade associations, educational organizations, and service organizations to lecture series and fund-raisers. He has spoken before numerous civic and business groups, conferences, and trade organizations, including the Design-Build Institute of America, the American Public Transportation Association, the American Road & Transportation Builders Association, the U.S. Privatization Revolution Conference, the Rail BOOT Conference, the Australaisian Urban and Regional Information Systems Association, the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators, the American Association of Cost Engineers, and the Long Beach Economic Outlook Conference.

INNOVATION COLLABORATION FORUMJohn Haynes, Project Controls Mgr.John L. Haynes, PSP, is a certified Planning and Scheduling Professional (PSP) since 2002 and the current Chairman for the AACE Western Winter Workshop.John has served as Chairman and Executive Director of the WWW for the past 12 years. Past President of San Francisco Bay Area Section (two-terms), Served as VP, Secretary and Treasurer of the SFBA Section. Served as AACE Director – Region 6 in 2010 – 2011. John is currently serving on the section board as an advisor. Education: B.A. Music, Musicians Institute, Professional Experience: Project Controls Manager for Hill International, Inc. Duties: Project Manager for Bay Area Toll Authority oversight of a $256M Caltrans/Bay Area Toll Authority project, DPM for the BART Earthquake Safety Aerial Structures Retrofit contract. John has served as a Project Controls Engineer for construction of Civil/Industrial, Transportation, Information Technology and GSA contracts for over 26 years running, with a TIC valued over $7.7 Billion. Favorite project: Program Schedule Manager on Amtrak’s “Acela” High-speed Rail from Washington, DC to Boston, MA.

Garrett Harley, Director, Engineering & Construction StrategyA passionate advocate of project controls and the value that it provides sparked Garrett’s career as a project controls engineer out of college with Bechtel Corporation. Upon leaving Bechtel Garrett worked as a trainer, implementation consultant and sales engineer for a Primavera Authorized Reseller named Kelar Corporation in San Francisco. During Primavera’s expansion his office and staff were acquired and formally joined the Primavera family in 1997. He has continued to focus his energies within the project management arena across a variety of vertical markets and roles and is now the industry manager for Engineering & Construction as part of the Primavera Global Business Unit within Oracle Corporation. “Knowing that our products are an integral part of delivering many of the world’s most transformational projects that you can see and touch first hand is why I think this is the most satisfying business to be in on the planet...for me it’s always been about helping the projects”. He is married and has 2 daughters, is an Outdoor Emergency Care Technician & National Ski Patroller at Homewood Mountain Resort in the Lake Tahoe basin; enjoys a variety of endurance athletics and is an Ironman.

Doug Eberhard, Senior DirectorFor over 25 years, Doug Eberhard has created and implemented innovative computer model-based solutions on over $120 Billion of Capital Planning, Design, Engineering, and Construction projects around the world. As the former CTO of Parsons Brinckerhoff, Doug helped pioneer unique and award-winning solutions to visually and virtually manage and communicate proposed projects using Building Information Modeling or BIM, Real-time Visualization, Web Collaboration and Project Information Management Systems. Doug’s more notable projects include implementation of 4D Modeling for the $ 21B NYC World Trade Center Rebuilding Program Construction Management , the $780M NYCT Fulton Street Transit Center, both Public and Private Information Websites for the NYC Lower Manhattan rebuilding plan and Internet-based Program Management Systems for General Motors, AT&T, FEMA, Network Rail, NYC MTA, Caltrans and the Singapore Ministry of Environment. Doug has been a featured speaker at numerous industry, media and academic events and is a founding member of the National Academy of Sciences Transportation Research Board - Geometric Visualization Committee. Doug was named to the Carnegie Mellon Presidents Advisory Board in 2007, served on Stanford University’s CIFE Technical Advisory Committee and has been an advisor to several AEC companies and industry consortia.

Autodesk, Inc.

Brian Clarke, Project Controls ConsultantBrian Clarke joins ARES Project Management with over 22 years of experience selling & managing enterprise software in the ERP/Supply Chain/ePM/mobile solutions to the Fortune 1000 as well as SMB’s. Prior to ARES, Brian was with Vela Sytems, now owned by Autodesk for 5 1/2 years and was working directly with CM, GC, Specialty Contractors, Owners, A&E & Facility Managers in both the Public and Private Sectors.

Brian was instrumental in the acquisition by Autodesk in June 2012. Brian previously served as Director of Sales for Constructware where he helped achieve over 125% sales growth rates annually before the company was successfully acquired by Autodesk, Inc. Prior to joining Constructware, he was a Sr. Sales Manager for multiple Global ERP/Supply Chain Software Companies. He holds a B.S. degree in International Business from the Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall University.

Konstantine Tonas, Vice President Professional ServicesKonstantine’s professional career had an unusual beginning as he graduated from UC Davis with a B.A. in Physics and a minor in Russian. His desire to solve complex problems and learn about cultures and languages was instilled in him while growing up in San Francisco. Konstantine can read, write, and speak Greek, Bulgarian, Russian, and English. His first job out of college was in helping mining companies search for gold by chemically analyzing soil samples from throughout the world. As gold crashed in the 1990’s, his interests grew into software and technology and eventually began working for one of the top construction software companies. Konstantine started in technical support, then got out into the field and writing training manuals and performing software implementations. In 2005, Konstantine started a construction software services firm which was ultimately acquired by Hill International in 2008. In the last 15 years, he has worked with 100’s of clients helping them assess and review their construction management processes and needs. Konstantine has worked with various construction groups from multiple industries: Education, Energy, Oil & Gas, Municipalities, State Agencies, Transportation, Retail, Manufacturing, Technology, Developers, and Hospitality. Konstantine has seen these industries from the Owner, Contract Management, General Contractor and Subcontractor perspectives. When he’s not working Konstantine enjoys spending time with family, biking, playing basketball, and volunteering at his church.

PCI/Hill International

Paul Verveniotis, Senior DirectorPaul Verveniotis joined Oracle Primavera’s Product Strategy team through the acquisition of Skire, effective September 2012. Previously, he led Skire’s vision and strategy since its inception, developing Unifier as the market-leading Capital Project / Portfolio Management platform. Paul also has two decades of experience in engineering-procurement-construction-operations management. Prior to Skire, he was a principal engineer and founding member of a full-service engineering firm, where he was responsible for engineering, design, and project management on major advanced technology projects. Previously, Paul served as a senior aerospace engineer for the U.S. Navy, where his responsibilities included engineering and failure investigation, as well as human factors research and design. During the early 1980’s, he was instrumental in developing computer-aided design practice at Bechtel. He holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and is a registered mechanical Professional Engineer in several U.S. states.

CAPITAL MANAGEMENT SPEAKERSIvar Satero, Deputy Airport Director, Design and ConstructionIvar Satero is the Deputy Airport Director responsible for the Design & Construction Division at SFO. Design & Construction is responsible for the implementation of the Airport’s Capital Improvement Program. The current major initiatives underway at D&C include the Replacement Air Traffic Control Tower, Terminal 1 Redevelopment Planning, Terminal 3 Renovation, Runway Safety Areas, Baggage Handling System Modernization in the International Terminal and Terminal 3, West Field Cargo Redevelopment and various infrastructure and support facilities projects. Prior to this, from 1994 to 2003, Ivar managed projects of the Airport’s $3B Master Plan Expansion Program. He was the project manager for transit projects including the AirTrain System and the Airport BART Station. Ivar has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from San Jose State University and an MBA in Finance from San Francisco State University. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of California.

Jim Eisenhart, PresidentJim Eisenhart is President the the Ventura Consulting Group with offices in Ventura, CA and Houston, TX. His firm specializes in enabling large, complex construction projects and programs realize “World Class” teamwork with velocity and consistency. He has led partnering workshops and processes on over 700 projects and programs worldwide from the Pentagon Renovation to the San Francisco Bay Bridge. Jim was recently recognized by the International Partnering Institute as the inaugural (2012) recipient of their “Excellence in Partnering Facilitation” award for his “industry leadership, facilitation skills and his leadership in developing others in the partnering profession”. He is the author of “Raising the Bar on Construction Project Teamwork: From Good to World Class”, published by Force10 Press in 2011. Mr. Eisenhart has written numerous articles for ENR and other industry publications. He has spoken at AGC, CMAA, AIA, and DBIA national conventions on the subject of construction project and program teamwork. Jim has an MBA from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management

Maureen Wakeland, Director Project Management OfficeMaureen has served the people of Texas and the Texas Department of Transportation for over 25 years in various roles and increasing levels of responsibility. Maureen currently serves as the Director, Portfolio Management and Reporting, as part of the Project Management Office. Maureen also served as the Interim Director for the Project Management Office when it was formed from Sept 2010 to August 2011.

TX DOT

Dan Melamed, Physical ScientistDan Melamed is currently with the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Environmental Management (EM). He has worked on budget formulation process, performance metrics, and risk assessment and analysis. He is also involved in the analysis of the current cost uncertainty model. He has also been involved in teams that have reviewed the risk management plans, earned value management systems, and other aspects of the operating baselines for a variety of the environmental cleanup operations sites across the DOE complex. Prior to his work at the Department of Energy, Dan Melamed was an employee of Brookhaven National Laboratory, where he did research on waste processing technologies and solar energy conversion. In addition to being a Certified Cost Consultant (CCC), as well as and Earned Value Professional (EVP). He is the past president of the National Capital Section and is member of the Technical Board of the AACE International. Dan Melamed has a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Princeton University. In addition to being a member of AACEi he is also a member of the American Chemical Society. He is the author of over 20 peer-reviewed publications and one patent.

U.S. Department of Energy

John C. Post, Business ManagerMr. John Post is an assistant deputy principal director for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) and Photon Science Directorate at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). He is also responsible for business development for LIFE. Mr. Post earned his B.S. in 1984 and his M.B.A. in 1986 from the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Past roles at LLNL have included resource manager in the Atomic Vapor Isotope Separation and Inertial Confinement Fusion programs, business manager for the NIF Directorate, as well as a founding member of the NIF Project Office. Mr. Post is often called on by the Department of Energy (DOE) to lead or participate in cost, schedule, and risk reviews for many of its large projects in the DOE Office of Science, Environmental Management, and National Nuclear Security Administration portfolios. He also holds a Project Management Professional certification from the Project Management Institute.

Sueck, CPE, CCC, CEP, PSP, AVS, MRICS General Manager - JFK GM Financial/Project Controls – CRE Services - As a general manager of the JFK Redevelopment Program, have full financial reporting responsibilities, create, develop, and execute financial reporting with multiple funding sources and stakeholders. Colm Tully, Senior Cost EngineerColm Tully graduated from Dublin Institute of Technology in 2006 with a first class honors degree in Construction Economics and Management (Quantity Surveying). He worked with O’Byrne Jenkins, a Professional Quantity Surveying / Project Management firm in Ireland for two years before moving to San Francisco and joining Arup in 2008. He is currently working as a Senior Cost Consultant with the cost engineering group providing cost, schedule and constructability advice on a multitude of large scale infrastructure projects throughout the US and abroad. Since joining Arup, Colm has expanded his knowledge of BIM as it relates to cost engineering, specifically 4D model based scheduling and 5D model based estimating and will be sharing some lessons learned during the research and implementation phases of a BIM software for his company. Colm is a Certified Cost Consultant through AACEI, a Sustainability Professional through the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure and is currently serving as secretary for the San Francisco Bay Area Section of AACE.

Lauren Scammell, Cost EngineerLauren Scammell is a Cost Engineer based in San Francisco with Arup, an international engineering consultancy. As a member of Arup’s Cost Engineering team, providing cost estimating, scheduling, and constructability services for infrastructure and building construction projects worldwide, Lauren specializes in construction scheduling, risk-based contingency analysis and model-based cost engineering. Lauren’s experience covers a wide spectrum of projects including bridges, highways, rail, and marine work. Lauren holds a MS in Civil & Environmental Engineering (Design/Construction Integration) from Stanford University and a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the University of New Brunswick in Canada. Lauren is a registered professional engineer in California and a Certified Cost Technician through AACE. She is also a Sustainability Professional through the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure, a LEED Accredited Professional, and Treasurer for the San Francisco Bay Area Section of AACE.

Paul Hewitt, PrincipalPaul Hewitt is the Principal of IPE (International Project Estimating Limited) and has 37 years experience in construction cost estimating, project controls and project management on major international infrastructure projects. Since 2004, as Principal of IPE, Mr Hewitt has been involved with estimating many of the major design build finance infrastructure projects in Canada as well as major infrastructure projects in the United States, Middle East, Asia & South America. His responsibilities have included preparing detailed hard money cost estimates and joint venture bid reconciliations for many of the largest contractors in the world, feasibility level estimates for engineering firms, capital budgets for utilities and government organizations and estimate reviews for lending agencies and claim litigations. Mr Hewitt, founder of The Chief Estimator Software, has been involved with developing computerized estimating systems and compiling infrastructure cost data since 1984. Prior to founding International Project Estimating Limited, Mr Hewitt was Vice President and Chief Estimator for Aecon Construction in Toronto Canada, Co-Managing Director of Mahindra-Matthews Construction in Mumbai India and Vice President & Chief Estimator for Matthews Group in Toronto Canada. Mr Hewitt graduated from Queen’s University in 1975 with a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Civil Engineering and is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering.

Gary has led the program technology and control teams for major, multi-year programs, advised clients on selecting program management software, and implemented business process-driven program software. This includes the $1.2 billionGwinnett County CIP, for which he led theProgram Controls Group from program start to finish. He has led creation of a comprehensive Web-based database system featuring job cost and schedule reporting solutions for project managers, finance, management personnel, and design and construction personnel. Gary is an expert in construction document control, cost controls, program and project scheduling, computer networking design and administration, technical support team management, document control, SCADA, water and wastewater plant operations, and construction.

Mike Vargas, PrincipalMichael Vargas is the founder and principal consultant of Atlas Project Support. This San Diego based firm focuses on energy consumption, sustainable building practices and preconstruction services for corporate, government, and private clients. Atlas is experiencing significant growth as the diversity of clients and continual exploration of new markets sparks innovation and strategic alliances. Michael holds both academic and industry credentials and has more than 12 years of construction and project management experience. In addition to his consulting business, Michael is a Professor in the Business School at Saint Leo University a Catholic University located in Florida. This educational component resonates throughout Michael’s professional life as he also conducts training in energy consumption and sustainability for organizations and groups. He is an Advisory Panel Member of the Green Building Council Institute’s Continuing Education Committee while chairing the Quality Sub-Committee for the Continuing Education Advisory Group (CEAG), overseeing and auditing curriculum and promoting best practices. Vargas earned a Masters in Business Administration, a Masters in Project Management and most recently a Graduate Certificate in Financial Analysis from the Keller Graduate School of Management. Michael completed a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration at San Diego State University, along with a Certificate in Green Building and Construction. Mr. Vargas is currently pursuing his doctorate of education in leadership at Creighton University. He is recognized by the Association of Energy Engineers as a Certified Business Energy Professional and the California Association of Building Energy Consultants (CABEC) as a Certified Energy Plans Examiner and is a LEED Accredited Professional with the Green Associate designation supporting the US Green Building Council. Michael has a Contractor Quality Manager certification from NAVFAC. Mr. Vargas is also a Construction Manager in Training through the Construction Management Association of America. Ted Hall, Executive DirectorTed Hall, P.E. has over 42 years of transportation project implementation experience in the design-bid-build, design-build and direct-hire environments. He is currently serving as the oversight services Program Manager to the Bay Area Toll Authority assisting with the design and construction of the new eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and its signature self-anchored suspension bridge.

Trish Stoops, Deputy Program ManagerTrish Stoops, Deputy Program Manager for the TBSRP has been resident at Pier 7 campus for the TBSRP since the beginning of the BAMC involvement of the project, which began in 2005. Trish was instrumental in identifying critical issues identification and action items for mitigation. One of the tools that Trish will discuss at this conference is the use of the best practice earned value analysis to help maintain schedule and identify resolution of entitlement issues that arose as the program evolved.

Konstantine Tonas, Vice President Professional ServicesKonstantine’s professional career had an unusual beginning as he graduated from UC Davis with a B.A. in Physics and a minor in Russian. His desire to solve complex problems and learn about cultures and languages was instilled in him while growing up in San Francisco. Konstantine can read, write, and speak Greek, Bulgarian, Russian, and English. His first job out of college was in helping mining companies search for gold by chemically analyzing soil samples from throughout the world. As gold crashed in the 1990’s, his interests grew into software and technology and eventually began working for one of the top construction software companies. Konstantine started in technical support, then got out into the field and writing training manuals and performing software implementations. In 2005, Konstantine started a construction software services firm which was ultimately acquired by Hill International in 2008. In the last 15 years, he has worked with 100’s of clients helping them assess and review their construction management processes and needs. Konstantine has worked with various construction groups from multiple industries: Education, Energy, Oil & Gas, Municipalities, State Agencies, Transportation, Retail, Manufacturing, Technology, Developers, and Hospitality. Konstantine has seen these industries from the Owner, Contract Management, General Contractor and Subcontractor perspectives. When he’s not working Konstantine enjoys spending time with family, biking, playing basketball, and volunteering at his church.

Mychal Brosamer, PresidentMychal has worked in the construction industry for over 30 years. With Ball, Ball and Brosamer and R&L Brosamer, Mychal worked on several heavy and highway projects including the Central Arizona Project canal – the country’s largest aqueduct system, rebuilding runway 24L at the LAX airport, and several highway rehabilitation jobs throughout California . Ultimately, Mychal became part of Brosamer’s project controls team with a specific focus on project scheduling and claims analysis. Beginning 1994, Mychal was President of TrueLine Systems, an integrated job cost and accounting system tailored for mid-size to large construction and homebuilding companies. One year ago, Mychal and his partners founded RevelPoint, LLC – a software company focused on creating a cloud-based project scheduling solution that launched this month

Natalie Saylor, PresidentMs. Saylor is the founder and principal of Saylor Consulting Group, an independent third party cost consulting firm specializing in public construction. The firm is currently providing project control services on some of the largest projects in the state including California High Speed Rail, San Francisco General Hospital, CDCR California Health Care Facility in Stockton, and Sacramento County International Airport Expansion. Her real world experience on current construction projects combined with decades of experience in construction economics research gives her a unique perspective on the current California construction economy and the challenges facing project controls professionals in accurately assessing cost risks. While many firms can provide estimating services, only Saylor has been tracking, indexing and predicting construction costs since 1957. Saylor’s Construction Cost Data publication is also nationally recognized and used by Owners, Architects, Engineers, Construction Managers and Contractors throughout the United States. Ms. Saylor has presented at numerous professional organizations on market trends since 1999 including American Association of Cost Engineering (AACE) Construction Management Association of America (CMAA), and Coalition of Adequate School Housing. She is a board member of CMAA and is an active member in AACE, Women in Transportation (WTS), and American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC).
