A NOTE FROM FATHER PAT

www.saintlukeslidell.org Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time | 2

Dear Parishioners,

I am happy to announce that after studying and discussing how St. Luke church facilities can be adapted for the Phase 3 coronavirus recovery, we have a plan in place that will allow more of you to sit in pews at Sunday Masses. Beginning the first weekend of October, for the Masses of October 3-4, we will use every pew in the addition section of the church, (sections H & J) the area with the longer pews by the large confessional room. In checkerboard fashion, we will have people or small groups on each end of the pew. Then in the second pew, space for people in the middle, and alternating in a checkerboard-style fashion so that safety and distance are still maintained. This should enable us to add about 15 spaces for sitting in church. Masks are still required, and we still need to make reservations for Masses, at least for the time being, though the coronavirus new case numbers continue to drop, praise God! I really want to compliment and thank you all. It pleases me to see that hardly anyone leaves Masses early now. It pleases me to see so many of you willingly help to sanitize your pew spaces as you leave Mass. I know those may seem like small acts, perhaps even small penances for some of you, but I see them as holy acts of kindness and community building. I’m happy to see it, and to share that good news about it with you. Keep up the good work! We ARE, by the grace of God, getting through this crazy coronavirus business! October is upon us - Mary’s month. I know so many of you are praying with added fervor right now, as I am. These are trying times for our parish, our state, our country. So much seems broken, wrong, beyond repair. But Mary our mother is ALWAYS interceding for us. And there IS much good going on in the kingdom of God that is the Church, both here locally and around the globe. Today, many of you will join me for the Pro-Life Rosary chain on Gause Boulevard. The silent, peaceful presence of us praying for life is a wonderful gift we give to Slidell. Many of you pray with us from home, and I ask you to continue that prayer. Join us in the rosary at the 2:00 p.m. hour on Sunday. You may feel it might be a little more dangerous to attend the march this year, but I completely trust in Mary’s intercession for us, and Christ’s protection for us in this endeavor, to keep us safe. I thank in advance those of you, particularly our young members, who will bear eloquent witness to the dignity of all human life by participating in the Life Chain. As I mentioned last week, the upcoming 40 Hours Eucharistic devotion will be offered for two purposes this year: to thank God for His protection during the coronavirus, and to pray for peace and safety for ALL our citizens. It is my opinion, that we as Catholics need to be people of peace, not just in words but in actions. We need to be the people, the voices, who encourage peace by building it through mutual respect, one soul at a time. I know that if people come sincerely to the Lord in the Eucharist to pray for that intention, it will be given to us. St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast day actually also falls on this Sunday, prayed that he could be “an instrument of Your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love. All of us need to keep that in mind. And it’s a wonderful intention for all of us to come to spend some time during that 40 Hours with Christ, Who is THE source of our lasting peace!

God bless you all,

7 | SAINT LUKE THE EVANGELIST CATHOLIC CHURCH @SAINTLUKESLIDELL

F R O M F A T H E R D A V I DDear friends,

You may have noticed, if you’ve been to the 5 p.m. Saturday evening Mass recently (or, until recently, the 8 p.m. Mass), that some of the music selections are different than the kind of music being sung at our other Mass times. And if you’re the kind of person who likes to join in singing at Mass—or maybe just likes things to be familiar and not change—you might have found yourself wondering what is going on with, for example, the music we are using at 5 p.m. Mass during the Entrance and Communion.

Well, as you might know from weekday Masses, every Mass has an entrance antiphon and a communion anti-phon. You probably know that an antiphon is a short sentence meant to be chanted or read as a refrain. If verses are used, they are taken from a Psalm or another Psalm-like text from Scripture. This results in the structure that we see, for example, in the Responsorial Psalm after the first reading at Mass: There is the antiphon or response that is repeated, then a verse from the Psalm, then the antiphon again, then another verse, etc.

So why are we singing these antiphons before—or even in place of—an entrance hymn or communion hymn? Well, every Mass has certain prayers which are called the Proper of the Mass, because they are prayers that are “proper” (i.e. specific) to that day and generally change from day to day. The “propers” are prayers that the Church gives us to pray at the specific Mass for that day. And the Entrance Antiphon and Communion Antiphon are part of this. They are really not meant to be left out!

Not just any music can be used during Mass or other liturgies. Believe it or not, the Church actually instructs us on how to choose music for Mass! For example, in The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (or GIRM, 2011), which is the Church’s official instruction on how Mass is to be said in the ordinary form of the Roman Rite, we are directed: “The main place should be given, all things being equal, to Gregorian chant, as being proper to the Roman Liturgy” (41).

Really? The Church wants us all to chant, even after Vatican II? Yes, actually the Church wants us to continue her sacred music tradition of Gregorian chant. Music at Mass, sacred music, should sound different than the popular music of daily life! You should be able to hear it and think, “Sounds like I’m in church.” This means it really shouldn’t sound like ordinary popular music. Even the “praise and worship” genre, which I myself enjoy and am very good at playing on guitar or piano, is not really appropriate for Mass. There are various reasons for that, but mostly because “praise and worship,” or other contemporary Christian music, takes the form of Christian words set to an obviously secular style of music, often folk rock, soft rock, or pop rock. And Gregori-an chant, as well as the more traditional-sounding hymns, definitely do not sound like music you would hear at a gym, restaurant, dentist’s office, or shopping mall. The very sound of sacred music should tell you that where you are, and what is taking place, is sacred!

If you read the documents of Vatican II, you will discover that, unlike what you may have been told, Vatican II put the highest value on using chant at Mass and wants us all to work towards being able to sing at least simple chant music. Chant is different than other music and even other hymns, because chant does not have a “beat” like most other music has in the western world. The non-metrical nature of chant means that the music exists as a vehicle for praying the words, words which often are taken from Sacred Scripture and are meant to be prayed in song. In chant, the words are what are most important, not catchy tunes (even though some very beautiful chants will occasionally have you humming long after Mass is over). This is also the reason that at 5 p.m. Mass we have begun using an English chant setting of the various Mass parts, like the Gloria (Glory to God), Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy), and Agnus Dei (Lamb of God). It is much more prayerful and flows more naturally, in my opinion, than rushing through “and on earthpeacetopeopleofgoodwill” while dragging out phrases like “with the Hoooooolyyyyyyy Spiiiiiiriiiiiit.” Part of the reason for this, of course, is that in chant, the composer isn’t trying

Page 9: A PARISH OF DEANERY X ARCHDIOCESE OF NEW ORLEANS JULY … · But it's time for us to resume that battle. It's a battle we families, praying people and people of good holy will can

www.saintlukeslidell.org Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time | 8

to cram the text of the prayer into his tune; rather, he writes chant by simply putting melody to the text of the prayer, which is more important than the music!

But that’s not all the Church has to say about choosing music for Mass. The GIRM gives specific instructions about choosing the music for the Entrance and for Communion:

“In the Dioceses of the United States of America, there are four options for the Entrance Chant:

(1) the antiphon from the Missal [which we recite at daily Mass and now sing at 5 p.m.] or the antiphon with its Psalm from the Graduale Romanum [one of the Church’s official books of chant], as set to music there or in another setting;

(2) the antiphon and Psalm of the Graduale Simplex [another chant book of the Church] for the liturgical time;

(3) a chant from another collection of Psalms and antiphons, approved by the Conference of Bishops or the Di-ocesan Bishop, including Psalms arranged in responsorial or metrical forms;

(4) another liturgical chant that is suited to the sacred action, the day, or the time of year, similarly approved by the Conference of Bishops or the Diocesan Bishop” (GIRM, 48).

The same guidelines are given for music at Communion in no. 87 of the GIRM. Note that none of these options explicitly allow for “other church songs,” although it has become common practice in almost all parishes. Often, even the more “traditional” hymns (not to mention many modern church songs) contain ideas that subvert or even contradict the Truth of the Gospel! To replace the Church’s scriptural prayers with such problematic songs does a double disservice to our prayer at Mass.

These are just a few reasons why we have started using chant at 5 p.m. Mass. Led by the beautiful voices of our cantors, these chants give us prayers that are specific to the feast or liturgical time being celebrated, so that we can enter more completely and prayerfully into the liturgy. Next time you go to 5 p.m. Mass, be sure to pick up a song sheet so you can pray the antiphons and even try singing along! It’s just like singing the Responsorial Psalm. And just remember: to paraphrase St. Augustine, “The one who sings prays twice.”

Saint Cecilia, Pray for us!
