OUR VISION
To know Christ and
to make Christ known

Fr. Paul Graney
Associate Pastor

Fr. Derik Peterman
Associate Pastor

The priests who serve in the Archdiocese of Detroit begin their assignments
on July 1 of each year. July 1 also begins the new fiscal year of each
parish. The newly ordained begin their first assignment and the priests
who have been reassigned also start anew in their assigned parishes.
The Assignment Board makes recommendations to Archbishop Vigneron
and then he appoints the priests. The assignments are usually three
years for an associate pastor and six years for a pastor.

So, please join me in welcoming our new Associate Pastor Fr. Dave
Tomazycki. Fr. Dave was serving for four years at Our Lady of Good
Counsel in Plymouth. He is one of Fr. Graney’s classmates. An article of
introduction will be in next week’s bulletin.

In addition to Fr. Dave there will be a priest in residence beginning this
weekend. Fr. Jim Livingston will be living in the rectory and taking one
of the weekend Masses of the parish. Fr. Jim is the new chaplain at
Ascension Hospitals in Southfield and Novi. He began his ministry on
May 1 of this year. An article of introduction can be found on page 9 in
today’s bulletin. The rectory will be full with four priests in residence, three
assigned to the parish and one who will assist on weekends.

The parish also welcomes a new staff member. Mr. Erik Coules has
joined the parish staff as the Director of Family Discipleship. When Greg
Crachiolo, the former DRE (Director of Religious Education) resigned this
past December it presented an opportunity to vision anew the Religious
Education experience of the parish. A Vision Team was formed and with
the guidance of the Holy Spirit came up with a new direction to enrich the
whole family and not just the child in regards to faith formation.

The Office of Family Discipleship will continue the necessary catechesis
and sacramental preparation for the children of the parish. Erik will
collaborate with Mrs. Ann Whitfield, our principal, in supporting the
teacher’s catechetical certification and the Archdiocese’s Religion standards.
Erik’s article of introduction will be in the parish bulletin on July 12.

I am grateful to Mrs. Linda Cwiek, Administrative Assistant, and Mrs.
Grace Papa for their support of the children, their families and Catechists
during the past six months. During the pandemic when the reception of
the sacraments were on hold, Linda took charge and patiently responded
to all of the questions and concerns of the parents. For this I am indebted.

I thank all of you for your prayers and financial support of our parish during
this time of pandemic. As I begin my 16th year as your pastor on July 1,
I am humbled to continue to serve you. Let us ask the Holy Spirit for the
gift of courage as we continue to know Christ and to make Christ known.

Peace.

A Prayer for Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the
Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things
and I desire to receive you in my soul. Since I

come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace
you as if you were already there and unite myself
wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from
you. Amen.

MEET FR. JIM LIVINGSTON, PRIEST IN RESIDENCE
Dear Our Lady of Sorrows Family,
I will be residing at Our Lady of Sorrows as I begin
my new assignment. This is my introduction to you
as I resume active ministry as a priest in the
Archdiocese of Detroit. I left the priesthood 15 years
ago and am excited in returning to my vocation as a
priest. And I do so with heartfelt gratitude to Fr. Mark
Brauer's generosity in creating a place and space for
me to serve as a joyful missionary to “Unleash the
Gospel” in this parish community and beyond.
I come to you as an Irish Catholic native of Michigan.
I was born into a beautiful, large Irish Catholic family.
My parents were loving and faithfilled in their example
to follow Jesus and love of the Church and the
sacraments. I have four sisters and one brother. My
mom continues to bless us with her presence for her
six children and ten grandchildren. My father passed
away suddenly and tragically in the mid1990s.
Ordained to the priesthood on June 29, 1991, the
Solemnity of the Feast of St. Peter and Paul, I was in
active ministry as a priest for over 13 years. Those
years of priesthood were blessed ones. The greatest
joy I received was being presider at the sacraments.
I remember my first Mass in holding the bread and
wine in my hands and through the prayers of the
Church in Christ these elements were blessed,
broken and shared with one another. I felt privileged
in bringing others into the faith through baptism,
hearing confessions, presiding at weddings and
anointing individuals in their sickness and dying.
These “sacrament moments” deepened my love for
Christ and His Church.
I left active ministry as a priest in February 2005. I
prayed and discerned at the time to step away from
active ministry to grieve the loss of my father who
died suddenly and tragically of suicide in 1996. I had
put my grief on hold to minister to the brokenness of
my family and pastoring two parishes with significant
financial issues.
During my time away, I was a clinical therapist,
hospice chaplain and director of mission and pastoral
care for a longterm retirement community. These
ministries were enriching and rewarding work. And,
in them, I believe God was laying the groundwork for
my return to active ministry as a priest.
I began thinking more seriously in my return to
the priesthood in the winter of 2015. My aunt, a
professed member of the Franciscan Sisters of the
Atonement (SA), was at Marywood in Livonia. She
had some medical issues and was in rehabilitation.
During a visit one afternoon, we began a deep and
meaningful spiritual conversation on why I left active
ministry. During our talk, I came to realize I was
very broken, angry and hurt concerning my father's
sudden death. I also became more aware of the
Lord's hand was upon me in beginning the healing
process in my life. I came away from the encounter
with the desire to pray and discern God's will in my life.
In the summer of 2016, I began clinical therapy for
my healing, a “recovery” that included counseling,
spiritual direction, prayer and conversations with
family and friends. After several months, I reached
out to Archbishop Vigneron regarding the possibility
of a return to active ministry. He was most supportive
pastoral and had me work with Fr. Bob Spezia,
vicar of clergy. What followed was a series of diligent,
personal, and I must say, helpful steps to facilitate
my return, including a conference for priests on
healing and pastoral ministry, an eightday silent
retreat, scheduled sessions of spiritual direction and
reconnecting with priests.
I am coming back to active ministry because I love
Jesus and want to follow Him. I had a conversion at
age 19 and fell in love with Jesus. I know this is
another step in my relationship with Him. I am saying
yes to Him. I love the Church, the sacraments and
the People of God.
In my current assignment, I will to serve as
chaplain to the Ascension hospitals in Novi and
Southfield. I am most grateful for this opportunity,
especially now. As Archbishop Vigneron has said:
“Christ’s death and rising is a grace that should
shape every day of a Christian’s life, and above all
in these days.”
As society and church life returns to normalcy,
I expect to also assist with weekend Mass and
sacramental schedules here at the parish. Seeking
the compassion and intervention of Our Lady of
Sorrows, I ask that you please pray for me, as I
will for you in this new part of our spiritual journey
with Jesus.
I am in Jesus,
Fr. James Livingston
